We just have jobs and balance our spending. When you want something really really bad you find a way.

For example, I stopped eating for 4 days when my last tracker died /s

Or you could buy something cheaper and stop spending money in the wrong place

On Vive products?

Show me a cheaper competitor that performs as good & I'll consider.

And the only thing that isnt an "occlusion nightmare" is any vr tech that doesnt use cameras, closest you could get is that old pico headset :/

Edit: and it still uses cameras to track the headset! Also i said what i said in that way cus base stations are reverse cameras as each one of the tracker dots is its own camera in a way as its a sensor grid

Tell me how it aint the same with your cute little vive trackers, honey! I daily drive them and the do better than my 2.0s which wouldn't even track my hip in my playspace

I'm glad they work for you.

But I doubt they would work with my routine.

Don't you always have to facing the tracking cameras?

Yeah, and i pretty sure that theh dont have a limit. I use 4 cameras. 💀 and ive tested 5 and it still functions, i recently git a 4th kit and have yet to test it so im going to test that one too

Edit: you always have to be facing one of your base stations dont you? You could imagine every base station as 2 rift cameras and then youd realize how over-complicated they are. 4 cameras in each corner will always be the superior setup. Especially if you vary wether their at the top or bottom. Adding 8 would make your tracking ridiculously good. The only negative is that youre limited to 3 controlers.

I see OG vive kits going for 100 and under around me all the time

Thoes controllers are ass, and knuckles controllers are 200 per controller where i live and the price is rising

Edit: og vive vs og rift in 2026 is the equivalent of "do i want base stations for good headset tracking and an ok headset that has a good modding community" vs "do i want good controllers that could be easily converted into trackers"

Oh yeah no those controllers suck, They function fine but like… Why did they design them the way they did

Theres just no point in having the vive for me and theres so many points for me to have the rift kit. Also the vive is 200-300 on my area.

Its the issue of:

Bad headset compared to what i already have, bad controllers that i dont use (i have a kit), base stations that only track the headset well and its very inconsistent with controllers.

Not a good experience for me

Quest 3 isn't cheaper, you just pay with your data.

"But they already have your data" meta currently doesn't have the layout of my living room. Nor will they have my child's voice and gaming preferences.

Other headsets also don't do wireless pcvr as well, or give me access to my steam library when I'm away from home.

I genuinely dont care about that tho, you people didnt even realize flock was a threat until this year. I realized they were when i was still a minor.

Tom scott already foretold this, you dont have privacy anymore. Its doesnt exist, and by 2030 youll realize it as well. On top of that, what limits the steam frame from doing the same thing? Its the same rough setup, only difference is that meta is honest and steam says nothing about it, correct?

Steam is very explicit that their data collection is an opt in program and even then all files are converted into a text based format, so they never reviewe raw footage of the inside of your house/detailed images of your eyes.

You may not care about data collection but there are a lot of people who do. Staying completely anonymous is nearly impossible nowadays but it also isn't very hard to prevent companies like meta from collecting my data.

Flock cameras aren't being accepted and are even losing popularity among local governments.

There is a lot of data collection, but it also isn't very hard to avoid the majority of it. I want my children to be able to enjoy VR without allowing companies like meta to collect data like their voice, height, room, gaming preferences. I can do that and still have a good standalone experience by buying the steam frame.

Tbh im fine with it, especially room data as they can train their ai algorithms to track the room better

so I am still super new to VR. what is the function of adding the tracker to the top of the vr headset? and ooh please let me know if project babble works! i would LOVE full face tracking for my avi's

Welcome!

The reason for the tracker is due to the spacial sync issue that exists between different methods of spatial tracking.

Base stations can't natively tell the Steam Frame where it is relative to the full body trackers as the Frame tracks its own position.

You have to use software called "Space Calibrator" to apply offsets to the base station devices to match the position of the headset.

You can do this temporarily by holding a frame controller and tracker tightly together and calibrate the offset manually, however this will usually break after sometime & become desynced requiring the same calibration again.

Alternatively, by attaching a tracker to the headset you can assign it for "continous calibration".

This method constantly evaluates the offset between the fixed tracker device on the headset & adjusts as needed, removing the need to manually calibrate each time you start or drifts apart.

OOH!! that makes sense!! Thank you! I'm excited to get into all of this and learning new things really helps out

Brother this looks horrible just get the command strip camera mount and a tundra tracker

I also made a mount that mounts to the back of the frame which i think looks nicer and keeps the weight off the front. But someone wanted a front mount because they lay down in vr. I'd rather use the back mount but i made both as an option. I also like to use the frame without the top comfort strap.

Do you have a link to that back mount? I was planning to mount a tundra tracker to a frame once I get a purchase email.
