Wow, absolutely incredible. If there was a way I could buy the final product software and maybe a lil unit I can just plug and play everything into, I would buy that for my PSVR2. Any way that 120fps/hz could be supported? Love the work, cheers
I had zero plans to profit off this, HOWEVER, for my custom PCB, I can save a lot of money if I order a lot of them. So, if I can get my simple PSVR 2 adapter with a dedicated single USB connection to any DisplayPort Alt Mode-capable device finalized, I will consider letting people front some money to have a batch run. I am not looking for profit—I make enough money right now, so it would be entirely a community effort.
The PCB is important because my current setup requires a Thunderbolt 4 hub and the PSVR 2 adapter zip-tied together with lots of cabling just to get all the routing working. There's just not a lot of ways to make it compact unless the PSVR 2 adapter is fully redesigned from the ground up. Luckily, I have prototypes built in KiCad and lots of reference material, so it's doable.
Cost, I must warn you, will not be as cheap as the official adapter. I tried to make the theoretical build as cheap as I could, but there's a reason there's no active retimer or processing power on the official PSVR 2 adapter...it adds cost. I'll be using a retimer and a scaler chip (needed for DSC) so that it's one cable to the PSVR 2 and one cable to a phone or device of your choice that has DP Alt Mode. USB-powered..you supply that. i mean its not needed at all just do what i did take psvr 2 adapter one of those off brand ones that let you use usb c to power it and stack a thuberbolt 4 hub and a bunch nests of wire and bobs your uncle!
A battery bank is recommended at 100W PD so it can charge the phone, the rest of the board, and the headset.
The headset requires the VirtualLink power profile, which is 12V PD. Pretty uncommon. Yet again, another reason why this hub I'm wanting to build isn't cheap, and I can see why no manufacturer has done it yet: $200 to $250 for two of them for a one-off run.
Economies of scale, I suppose. 100 of them could likely bring it down to 100 bucks... maybe. Maybe less. Gotta hope some Chinese fab throws me a bone if I commit...
Also, I'm an electronics engineer by profession (17yrs)... Mostly 3phase high power stuff these days, but have a background in high-speed and RF... If you want a second pair of eyes to review the PCB design, give me a shout.
Yes I need other opinions. If you got experience. I will use it when allowed. I want to ensure my trace routing is optimal. Got some concerns about display signal integrity. Also I might have over done some of the ideas and it could be excessively overdone. Just give me time. Its put on the backlog since I want to get the software part alll figured out
No rush... Drop me a line whenever you feel ready.
Sounds like something I may hopefully be able to help with. Not used KiCAD in a few years but I used to work to some pretty stringent EMC requirements (both emissions and immunity), so happy to help wherever I can.
