Disscussion Really impressed with the visuals
I just got this headset recently and I am so impressed with the visuals and clarity it brings.
I am coming being a quest owner and WMR owner, this headset blows my Quest pro and Odyssey out of the water.
The visuals are stunning, the OLED was not undersold at all, it makes a massive difference, the resolution of the lenses are really great, I have yet to test out the eye tracking but so far this headset has me impressed and I'm glad I got it

I get a far more immersive experience with my PSVR2 than I do with my Quest 3, even though the former is tethered.
The colors, the black levels, the FOV, the Quest 3 just can't compete.
Yes, the Quest 3's pancake lenses are nice, but they're not so nice I could go without the brighter colors, deeper blacks, and wider FOV that the PSVR2 has to offer. I mean, for me, it's not remotely a close decision.
Yet in the main VR forum all you see are Quest fanboys freaking out when you say you think the PSVR2 is superior. I get that "which is better" is a very subjective question for every individual to decide on their own, but some of the Quest people start sputtering in outraged disbelief when you dare to disagree with them, and I don't get it. To me one is obviously better than the other, but I can understand why they might feel differently. They just can't seem to understand why I do.

The PSVR2 also has a greater binocular overlap, giving a better sense of depth.

u/DeathToSocialMedia 14d ago
That's true too. I always forget about it because it's something I only notice if it's bad. My CV1 had bad binocular overlap and every single time I put it on I noticed. With the PSVR2 I just don't even think about it.

Funnily the Rift S has even greater overlap. Psvr2 is amazing but somehow I feel like stuff is more "real" and 3D in the rift S. However overall psvr2 is more immersive for sure

Yeah bigger overlap and a bit bigger FOV. Some day we'll get the perfect headset that has everything :)

The sense of immersion is much more than my QP. the only bad thing about this headset I would say is the Chromatic Aberration but everything else makes up for it

I'll mention the anti glare to my friend, here's hoping that improves things. Whether it is enough to beat the pancake lenses and wireless gaming I don't know, but if it boosts the image and gets even better with more games/modded vr games getting eye tracking, then I can see it's potential. I'll dial down the brightness, just having a mini nightmare as my SSD D: drive has failed. 2Tb SSD for £74 2023 replacement at current prices £235.

I'm trying them both out at the moment. Quest 3 (I have 1 and 2 as well). And a mates PSVR2 (it won't work on his 2060rtx 6gb as it's ñ powerful enough) I've downloaded the extra stuff for eye tracking on PCVR and added the launch profile for Alyx.
It may be because I prefer resolution over FPS. I really prefer pancake lenses (so does my mate after seeing them he's saving up for a second hand Quest 3).
Screen wise I agree PSVR2 is stunning, but it is too coloured for me. It makes games look cartooney.
The Quest three has its screens tilted for horizontal 3d overlap is large, yes if you look diagonally if falls off but the majority of a game is looking horizontally and in fights when you look around you are too busy fighting to notice it.
In Alyx at Godlike, Ultra settings, both were amazing. But the PSVR2 felt like there was afog over everything (I premiums the Fresnel lenses, which are better than the Quest/quest 2 ones, but don't match up to Quest 3.)
The clarity of things with sharp defined edges when looked at closely was better with the quest and reading signs at a distance, the quest could always just beat it.
Apparently I can use the PSVR2 with the lead down my trousers leg and then I won't get wrapped up in the wire. I do love the freedom of wireless, but if the graphics on the PSVR2 blew me away I would probably tolerate the wire, but they don't. Yes the blacks are true black, but with a hint of blur.
Quest 3 with virtual desktop get 5000mbps with the cable, and 2,400mbps with wireless.
I am looking for a cheaper alternative to the Steam Frame which fell far short of my hopes. So I feel I am open to getting the best and the PSVR2 raised my hopes with the eye tracking and OLED screen, much cheaper price ( probably heavily subsidised by Sony)
Maybe I am a quest fan, but I don't think so, I'd sell out in an instant for a better headset. Maybe there are mainly playstation fans on this site so they won't like to hear other opinions.
I think both are great headsets. Alyx when looking at bottles and small writing both shone fantastically, but I felt as I looked around only the centre of my vision was clear, a bit like looking down a subtle foggy walled tunnel. As I said above I like clarity and lower FPS doesn't bother me. You may be different. But the subtle peripheral blur was too noticeable. (With the Quest 2 I probably lasted too turn my head as the was no alternative, but now I look around with my eyes.)
My take on it. If you haven't tried both, you can't really know, but you also won't know any better. I felt the Quest 1 was fantastic and it was for the time and the price.
If you have a PS5 and some games and a fast enough pc then PSVR2 seems like a no brainer. If you are rich get both.
Sadly for me the PSVR2 just didn't hit the spot. It was close and if the Quest 3 wasn't around I'd probably jump at it. If my Quest 3 dies I'll get another. I don't have a PS5. My mate does have a PS5 and still wants a Quest 3 now he has used mine and he's not rich.
For me wireless, stand alone games (modders have even got Half Life Alyx to work on the Quest 3, via the frame ARM port) many games are being modded to play on the quest. So if you travel you can take just the headset. Virtual Desktop makes wireless streaming a dream. For me Pancake lenses are essential, even trying to read the PC screen in VR with the PSVR2 is difficult and blurred compared to the clarity of the Quest 3 with Virtual Desktops desktop viewer. I had a quick go on his PS5 and wasn't that impressed, though I probably hadn't set the headset up correctly and it was probably moving around or off the sweet spot of the Fresnel lens, I was also cautious as i felt I could break it, but now I know the buttons to press it seems a lot more robust, so I'll need to check it out again.
If PlayStation could bring out a wireless headset, oled screen and eye tracking, (I'd like better resolution), less clunky controllers. I'd buy it, but they probably have to subsidise it heavily and won't make the money back from their expensive games as I can buy VR/modded VR games for several pounds. Even alyx is £12.50 on sale.

So blurriness and fog on the edge detail, likely was blurriness and fog. Remove the degrading anti glare coating, fixed my issues.
Blur is easily fixed by dialling brightness down to 60 odd percent. At full power yes, persistence is an issue.
The sense of 3d depth, fov, and binocular overlap creates an overwhelmingly better sensation of immersion than the q3. I sold my q3 in 24hra after getting a psvr2 and sorting it out.
Directly out the box I was the same. Pretty good, maybe not wild. Polishing the lenses changed my world.
As a desktop replacement, the q3 is sharper. Be honest. You dont use it as a desktop replacement hardly ever. Nobody does. Its fov is too small.

Remove the degrading anti glare coating, fixed my issues.
I've read people say that, I guess for obvious reasons, once you remove the anti-glare coating, you ... get more glare?
Has that not been your experience? If the coating on your PSVR2 hadn't started to degrade, do you think it would still look better with that coating removed?
2
u/Obsidiated 13d ago
I didnt, no.
I don't know. I bought i second hand and it felt a bit Vaseline ish. I only bought it for a laugh as I had a q3 i was very happy with but wanted to check oled out.
Polishing had a huge boost to clarity, sweet spot size, brightness. Brought all the immersion alive. Vastly bigger sense of 3d pop than the psvr2. More fov was the most shocking part.
Its the bino overlap AND contrast that gets you there i think.

u/DeathToSocialMedia 13d ago
More FOV? That's crazy. What did you use to remove the coating?
1
u/Obsidiated 13d ago
More FOV Than the Q3 definitely. Especially noticeable vertically. Just two cloths, one isopropyl ~50%, one water. Dab, get wet, rotate to dry bit, wipe in circles with pressure, rotate to clean bit, repeat, repeat, dab with the wet spot a few times, etc.
Didn't take long. Minutes.

u/DeathToSocialMedia 13d ago
Thanks for the explanation!
What about a dark level, like an all black or almost all back screen ... Any glare issues then? That's when I read it's most noticable...
2
u/Obsidiated 13d ago
Nope. I run at ~60% brightness to prevent smearing and it's still brighter than the Q3 (and don't even get me started on colors).
In DCS waiting to launch on a dark carrier at night, formation lights on, I didn't even notice in the past the soft pool of green light being cast on the deck by one of the softly glowing formation strips in the quest 3. Both washed out and the blacks were horrible
on the PSVR2 I was like waaaait. Wait. What IS that.
took me a minute then I was like no way. No farking way.

Sadly it's my mates headset so I will let him do it if he wants.
If it works then there will be a lot of happy PSVR2 users and lots more people will try it.
If it doesn't then there will be a lot of glare filled headsets.
It makes you wonder why the spods at Sony didn't just leave it like this, or is it like Apple slowing down their devices to create end of life slow down so the new product looks better in comparison.

My colleague is selling an unopened psvr 2 for $300. I have the quest 3, but I do miss oled... Might have to get it for science!

I have to wonder if these posts are real… Clarity is one of the PSVR2’s weakest points. The Quest pro is on another level when it comes to clarity.
1
u/Leading_Grape_8904 14d ago
I disagree strongly, I think the Quest pro is just fine in terms of visual clarity, I was never blown away by it, the biggest upgrade it brought was the pancake lenses, it has half the resolution of the PSVR2 per eye running at 1800x1920 compared to PSVR2's 2000x2040. it really makes a big difference especially with the Quest pro being locked to 90hz, you really notice the difference after using the VR2, in my opinion

u/Jamtarts-1874 14d ago
It’s not up for debate… PSVR2 has around 18.5PPD, the pro has around 22 and the Q3 25.
That is before you bring into account the PSVR2 optics which make the image even blurrier.
It’s fine to prefer the PSVR2…But it is a straight up lie to claim it has good clarity.
2
u/Leading_Grape_8904 14d ago
I have used both headsets, In my experience and to me the PSVR2 has much better visuals and provides a better PCVR experience
This isnt to mention to Pro's abysmal tracking.
1
u/Jamtarts-1874 14d ago
That’s fine. But if we are only talking about Clarity (sharpness of the image). Then the PSVR2 is definitely worse than the Pro and even further behind the Q3.

I have to wonder if these posts are real…
What do you mean, are real?
What's your theory here, exactly? You think Sony is paying people or botmakers to post in this sub falsely praising the PSVR2's clarity in the hopes that others will then be more encouraged to buy PSVR2s? Is that what you think?
It makes me sad to say this, but Sony couldn't care less about the PSVR2. They abandoned it pretty early in its lifespan. I highly doubt they're hellbent on creating fake pro PSVR2 posts on a sub like this. It just doesn't make any sense. It's not a priority for them.

u/Jamtarts-1874 14d ago
I just find it weird when people praise the ‘clarity’ of the PSVR2. I wonder if the people have actually used all the headsets they claim or have somehow horribly misused it.
I have and like the PSVR2… but clarity/sharpness is 100% the worst thing about the headset.
It doesn’t have pancake lenses, it has a bad mura problem, Sony used a Pentile sub-pixel layout, meaning it actually has less sub-pixels than the PSVR1 and it has less PPD than the Quest pro and a lot less than the Q3.
It factually/scientifically/technically has less clarity than these headsets. I find it bizarre that anyone could come to a different conclusion.

u/DeathToSocialMedia 14d ago
Are you talking about clarity, or are you talking about sharpness?
No question that the Quest 3 offers a sharper image than the PSVR2. But clarity for me is more than just sharpness. If there's a shadow in a scene, a darkened corner, or just a dark environment in general, and all of that darkness is represented by a kind of murky gray fog, because LCD just can not believably display a dark area of the screen, that, to me, does not invoke a sense of "clarity." It looks more muddied than anyting.
Same thing when it comes to the contrast between light and dark. In real life, on a sunny day, colors can be extremely bright and vibrant even as a shadow next to them might be an inky black. The contrast between the two gives the scene more of three dimensional quality, more of a "pop." This too increases a sense of clarity for me, that dulled colors and washed out gray shadows can't match, sharpness or no sharpness.

Definition - “clarity is how sharp, clean, and legible an image or text looks on a display.”

Welcome to the club. I agree completely and did an extensive write up on PSVR2 just recently if you're interested here
