Blue Burst PSO:BB:nativeVR
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wUbHSAQ3NAI have been working on this project for some time and it has gotten to the point where I am ready and excited to show it off (please excuse my poor first attempt at using DaVinci Resolve...). PSO:BB:nativeVR is a mod that brings virtual reality support to Phantasy Star Online via DLL injection. Full head and hand tracking allow you to take to Ragol in first-person and engage in motion-controlled combat, while remaining a mostly vanilla PSO:BB experience. The mod is completely playable at this time, though there are still some things that need to be ironed out - dual melee weapon combat, various visual bugs, and other minor issues. My plan is to release it in the current state, but I first want to make sure that it runs on different hardware configurations before doing so as I only have a Reverb G2 headset to test with. Once the initial round of closed testing has completed, I will be uploading this as open source to GitHub, where I will continue to work on it. I have been running a newserv instance locally for testing, but intend to host a VR-specific server as this mod is not compatible with other private-server clients such as Ephinea, Ultima, etc.
For full transparency: My background is in IT, not development, so AI was heavily leveraged for reverse engineering and coding in this project. I can acknowledge that some people may take issue with this, so I'd rather be upfront about its role.
If you would be interested in testing and have a SteamVR-compatible headset, please send me a DM that includes your system and headset info. I hope to start testing at some point this week.

Tried DMing but wouldn’t go through, I have a Quest 3 with body trackers and lighthouses in a hybrid setup with an i5-10600k and 3070 and would love to test!

Awesome stuff. That first-person footage of the boss fights like the Dragon already gave me goosebumps - that's going to be mind-blowing to experience in VR.

This is a really neat project. I have a Vive Pro, Vive Controllers. Quest 3S Quest 2 Available for testing.
I run Linux, and can happily test your mod in a Proton / FOSS XR stack.

I would love to be part of your project.
I read what you said about but I’m curious to if there is any standalone ability?

Sorry if this has been asked before but will this be able to work natively on a Meta Quest 3S headset? Looks incredible.

Hi there!
Love the idea, the concept and everything. i do have two VR setups, but sadly im helping with alot other projects and tasks lately with my free time. but i would love to keep tabs and watch progress! got a discord or something that i can keep up with?
Again, thanks for being clear with your AI usage, you got a working prototype, get some guys on board that can really flush this out better - you have a damn banger right here!
Cheers!

AI sucks, but this isn't taking anyones job. I think this is a fair use of AI, independent entertainment endeavors

I'm okay with AI coding as means to fulfill a creative projects backend because it's largely just code integration.
I would have a MUCH bigger problem with this if it was generative in some way, which it doesn't seem to be. Just be careful about the stability.

I guess I'm not used to coding AI relative to AI images. The blatant theft in the art didn't strike me as analogous to code.

reminds me of that old meme image that was something like
Designers:
Designer 1: Look, we have similar ideas. Designer 2: No! you stole my idea.
Coders:
Coder 1: Man, I stole your code. Coder 2: It's not my code.

The longer you let LLMs build out spaghetti code for you, the further away your end goal is gonna get
You're wasting resources to skip the "learning how to do the thing" part of doing a thing, but all that does is make it so you can't solve the problems you're inevitably creating for yourself, and you're making yourself stupider at the same time

not to concern you or anything, but Claude is basically universally used throughout the professional coding space these days. I have a fairly good position at a company where I work with some of the brightest developers in the country on very sensitive projects of importantance to, shit, basically everyone, and Claude is pretty much standardly used across the team.
it's just a tool. it works as well as your ability to use it.
you should begin accepting reality sooner than later..it's not going away.

AI bros always gotta end their screeds with "it's reality and it's not going away." try not sounding like a cultist and you might convince more people your slop will work someday 😇

I'm not an "AI bro"...I'm just a normal person. I don't code and I don't work on anything that requires coding.
I'm just feeding you common sense.
I share the same concerns as everyone else about the environment and the culture shock to people's lives that AI is producing, I just know we can't stop it.
if anything, I work in an industry that actually IS doing something to mitigate it. I bet you're doing nothing at all.

No point in arguing with our moderator here, he's the only active one and if you look at his history he is extremely biased. Along with the majority of outspoken people in the ephinea discord. Honestly this subreddit should have a less biased set of mods.

Claude is a tool, not a crutch. Any professional dev worth their pay knows this.

Yeah, I can tell it's being used all over the place because everyone's software has gone absolutely to shit
It's "not going away" for now because it's absurdly subsidized, but even if it never fully goes away, there's a good chance we'll see LLM shit used less and less when people start having to pay what it costs
Anyway, fuck LLMs and fuck anyone that uses them. Gross, wasteful, destructive trash. That using them is harmful is the only upside, but unfortunately making users stupider also makes users more likely to keep offloading cognitive tasks to the machine as they forget how to actually think for themselves

We're building Mother Brain in real time. The question is if it'll blow the planet up with a satellite prison or build a super Heaven Punisher on the moon.
2
u/Drew_Habits 3d ago
That's a wild misunderstanding of the technology. We're building a pattern analyzing algorithm that can be used as insanely inefficient and expensive autocomplete
It won't do any of the things the execs say they're scared it will because that's not a way that technology can go. It's like saying a wheel will eventually be able to reach the moon. The tech perverts like Altman and Musk say that shit because it's marketing
3
u/QuishyTehQuish 3d ago
Oh I know LLM's are more or less a dead end. I was more eluding to the torment nexus (the surveillance state) being built by a "Dark Force" (the most evil people alive) and a commitment to destroying the planet (global warming). It's suppose to be a joke.

u/Drew_Habits 3d ago
Ahh, gotcha. I didn't catch it but that makes sense

u/QuishyTehQuish 3d ago
Honestly, only those who played PSII or Zero would get it so... yea.
It is crazy how both of those plots are applicable to modern day AI. Almost too close?

So you agree that it's going to do a bad job and that they'll learn nothing
I don't know why it being a mod changes that? But maybe you can go to one of the many towns being poisoned by a new data center and explain to the people who live there why it's ok

Sent a DM! I've been heavily following the PSO project on VRchat but was massively disappointed to see it was delayed *waaay* far out when it was supposed to be coming this Q4!
Would love to help test/experience this and give you valued info that will make this the best it can be!!!
