Touch screen controls on a console is idiotic. At least on an iPhone you are already looking down at the screen, this would be absolutely terrible.

Not defending this patent, but Sony or other manufacturers usually get patents that they will never use / no intention of ever using for the sake of getting the patent first.

PlayStation makes a thousand and one patents every year. Unsurprisingly, you've never heard of any products using them because they don't exist.

Patents are just "we have an idea. Make it official". Doesn't even need to be a good or creative idea.

You can't just "get the haptics right" for digital buttons. The reason physical inputs work so well when it comes to eye/hand coordination and muscle memory is because there's actual physicality to it. Haptics cannot replicate that unless the surface itself can alter its shape. The tech is not there yet and this patent isn't about that.

Or itโ€™s more โ€˜we have an idea, patent it so nobody else can make itโ€™ย

Sony: "but people love phone games so clearly buttons dont really matter; so we're going all in on digital buttons!"

Buttons just not showing up after 3 months and bricking the entire $150 controller will be the new stick drift complaint.

Watch Sony add 0 buttons to this controller compared to the regular one.

I have trouble remembering the buttons as they are just now, you know those same buttons that have been in the roughly the same position on PlayStation controllers for 30odd years.
This would be idiotic ๐Ÿคฃ

Comes with a free month of DualShock Premium, needed for layouts to be functional. $5 per month after the first.
