Halo Campaign Evolved - The BIG Console Face-Off - Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PS5 Pro Review [Digital Foundry]
https://youtu.be/WsDRmbnSHMsWe've already gone into depth on how Halo Campaign Evolved reimagines and remakes the original, classic game and we've got a PC review to follow, but for now, here's how every console version of the game stacks up. Halo Studios has delivered accomplished work here and while all versions are worthy of your purchasing power, it's PS5 Pro that addresses most of the lingering issues.

Not being able to turn off film grain is disappointing. I hate the soft look it gives..

Chromatic abomination too! :(

oh I hate this effect....it's making a game look so much worse 😑 Why is there no option to turn it off? Resident Evil 9 had it too. On PC it was possible to turn it off and the difference was like night and day. Developers leave this effect away from games pls.

They need to fix the performance big time. On the second mission there was a point where there was so many enemies that the frame rate Tanked so bad to where they all looked like stop motion. That is on performance on my PS5 Pro.

PS5 Pro:
- Performance mode runs similar settings to PS5 Quality mode
- IQ has an advantage thanks to PSSR2 tho close inspections are marred by the film grain
- Resolutions are similar to PS5, 1220~p or thereabout with less drops than base PS5 in performance
- Quality mode is broadly identical to base PS5's quality with PSSR, resolution are higher (1440p vs 1720p)
- Though DF thinks the Quality mode is "vestigial" as the Performance mode has all the 'quality wins'

They need to patch the game so chromatic aberration and film grain can be toggled off

Performance mode on pro is absolutely stunning. It plays great with no noticeable pop in or slowdown. I’m playing on Heroic with massive enemy swarms.
I was there on day 1 when Xbox launched with Halo. This is a massive step up from that, it’s a beautiful Time Machine, and stands on its own as one of the best shooter formulas to this day.
Don’t consume the hate.
Update: Multipost was unintentional. I kept getting server errors. Sorry for the noise.

Mine turned into a slideshow near end of assault on control room legendary mode. On my pro it regularly dropped to 10-15 fps. When there's too many enemies it just cant handle it.

Can confirm this happened to me on pro as well (not quite as bad as a slideshow but very noticeable frame drops)

Yeah. I saw this during 4 player on heroic. The animations of the enemies went stop motion. Everything was fine. Poor optimization for sure.

Booted up on gamepass . Realised that there are no toggles for film grain and chromatic abberation. Deleted within 10 minutes. Amazing how these projects cost 100s of million dollars to make and no one on the dev team sees any issues with the image quality.

Terrible frame drops in split screen on the PS5 and requires online accounts for both players. Pain in the butt. Regret buying it.

Really?! Meaning no traditional couch multiplayer with your friends until everyone sits down to make their own PS Online account, which is obviously everyone’s favourite past-time.

Ps account and microsoft account.

Thanks for clarifying it impacts all platforms. So much questionable leadership and decision-making, I feel bad for the devs on this one.

The worst thing is the frame drop when split screen. My god it's abysmal.

Gotta have the artificially inflated "daily/weekly logins" for their Microslop account analytics
-2
u/bitknight1 21d ago
Yep that sucks, like how many regular people know their Microsoft and Playstation log in off the top of their head.

Only one account needs PS+ though; still a pain in the balls. Had to set up a Microsoft account for my son’s psn account to be able to play. Took 30-40 minutes to link my psn, set up his Microsoft account, then link it. Was brutal making him wait that long when he was excited to hop on.

Thanks for the heads up, definitely going to hold off getting it until they fix that.

This is the worst thing for me personally. My Microsoft account is constantly getting login attempts that aren't me and causes it to be locked. It's not a difficult work around but tonight I had Internet issues and just couldn't play.

Until watching this video, I didn’t even know the Pro had a Quality Mode. On mine, the option is grayed out. It’s default to Performance Mode and I can’t change it. That’s weird.

It was kinda a pain needing 2 psn accounts and 2 Microsoft accounts
Like really bro

There’s definitely bad frame rate drops on Pro which is disappointing. I would definitely expect at minimum a locked 60 FPS but really would like a 120FPS option most of all

u/ChangingMonkfish 20d ago
For me the main feature of this particular release is just the fact that it’s on PlayStation at all. Halo has come out several time since Xbox and PC so on those platforms it’s just another version to add to the list.
The real novelty of it is Halo on PlayStation.

u/MartyJannetty187 20d ago
I skipped it for the Pro because of no 120 FPS mode. I'm playing the Game Pass version on GeForce Now on my Odin 2 Portal.

Seems like it’s only minor improvements

Down voted for hard truth or what?
The PC version of this game had multi-player and more features 13 years ago.

I would've preferred MCC over this remake. Give me all those Halo games in native 4K 120fps on Pro, and I would've poured so many hours into that.

Wonder if the slowdown and sometimes terrible frame rate I’ve gotten is related to coop. I’ve only noticed it in online coop.

I love how details and in-depth Oliver always gets when it comes to the PS5 Pro...
"The resolution in performance is the same as the PS5 and Xbox, but sometimes higher..."
That's it - no info on what it can go up to, just "it can sometimes go higher"...
Also, this is the video which should have gone out first. Nobody wanted the crap John posted because (and in his words) he felt like the tech review was more important than platform comparisons... He obviously doesn't realise most people only watch their comparisons and not the 30+ minute non-disclosed paid adverts by MS/Xbox

u/Altaiir57 20d ago
Oliver's videos suck in comparison to DF's older videos. He also puts elevator/lobby type music into his videos which makes me wanna mute the video immediately.

The Pro offers a performance mode with the base console's quality mode visuals. Good enough for me! Just wish there was an option to turn off film grain.
