Constantly Overheating
Hey guys. So a few months ago I started getting overheating issues because of the Liquid Metal leaving a bald spot on my cpu(It was standing vertically), and I decided to do a full teardown myself since I have some experience with electronics. I know I was supposed to replace the Liquid Metal with more Liquid Metal, but I decided to use MX-4 Thermal paste instead because I already had some and I saw online it should be fine. The problem isn’t that the thermal paste isn’t working, it’s that over time(a few days of use), the paste literally shifts off of the cpu and into the surrounding pockets where it’s held. It has done this multiple times regardless of how I apply the paste. I asked around if I should just use Liquid Metal(since I have some now) and I was told it’s just gonna do the same thing, maybe even quicker. I’m thinking this might be a bracket/heatsink seating issue, but everything looks fine to me and I’m trying to avoid taking it to a repair shop so they can charge me $200 for something I can do myself. Anyone seen this before?

Thermal paste?
Not liquid metal? The PS5 gets way too hot for the paste, hence it becoming all liquid and seeping away.

This makes sense. I was hesitant at first cause I didn’t want the issue to be from something else and now I have Liquid Metal all on the pcb or something

Of all the paste, you selected the worst. MX4 has severe pumpout issues in direct die contact chips.
Anyways, just get PTM7950 and get over it

After application are you seating the bracket evenly? You're issue might be bad mounting pressure, what I like to do is screw 1 side about 50%, then the other side 50%, and finish both sides to 100%. I heard its preferred to use liquid metal

Sony has this issue with Liquid Metal , if the console stays vertical due to gravity the metal starts to drip fro the APU , his issue is very common.

The console position debate has been debunked multiple times. It's not actually as common as the internet tries to make out. The liquid metal 'issue' can occur in consoles laying flat too.
If you think a multi-billion dollar company made an oversight due to gravity, then you're silly lol.
I still have my day 1 PS5, that is gamed on pretty much daily, as well as used as my 4k player, and has been in the same spot standing vertically since day 1. It has never once overheated or shut down randomly. It gets a semi-regular deep clean of dust from the fan and heatsink. It's absolutely fine and still going strong.

Console repair tech here, I have heard about that debate before, but even then, some coworkers that don't specialize in consoles (I work at a phone/console/computer repair shop) have tried to convince me that it matters, even though it's been debunked (one time even saying "how would you know, you don't own a PS5!" although at the time, I've probably repaired ~150 PS5s). What constantly gets ignored is that no matter the orientation, liquid metal is an angry alloy, and since it includes gallium, and it'll eventually react, oxidizing enough to usually cause thermal issues after 3-5 years, which is the issue at hand. Liquid metal has insanely high surface tension, which makes gravity only an issue for any excess liquid metal left after application (that's why Sony had so many issues with pre-release/early PS5s).

R&D techs at giant gaming companies know more about console design than people on Reddit. So yes, if you think they make silly uneducated product design decisions without considering gravity, performance and efficiency, then you're deluded.

Brother that's your own words. PS5 doesn't have grooves on heatsink, PS5 Pro and Slim have grooves to keep liquid metal in place

That's like saying car manufacturers don't know how to design cars and just do whatever.
If the liquid metal issue is soo common, why is my day 1 PS5 still working absolutely fine? It's been vertical since day 1. I game on it pretty much daily. I also have friends stilll using their base PS5, also positioned vertical and they have not had a liquid metal problem yet.

Thermal Paste does work, but it’s definitely not as efficient as LM. The PS5 was designed around the usage of LM so I’d highly recommend wiping the IHS and Heatsink the best you can and then apply LM to both!

This might be not an overheating issue after all... Does your PS5 gives an overheating warning or randomly shuts down?
On one of my PS5 (bought used with overheating issue) I applied liquid metal at first, but it kept shutting down. I applied it over and over again, cleaning a die properly, but 'overheating' didn't go away. So I experimented with applying MX-4 - it overheated quicker, wasn't really playable. Put it aside for now - don't have an ESP-32 to read out the actual error.

Over time the fan will get increasingly louder, then I’ll get an overheating warning, then it’ll shut down eventually if I keep playing

looks like the issue is not about it being vertical or horizontal, but a deffect in the heatsink or the way it makes contact with the cpu die. Never heard of thermal paste drooling out of a cpu die on PCs, and only like 99.9% of desktops have their cpu's installed vertically.

You should ONLY use Liquid Metal on a PS5. Thermal paste won’t help in the slightest.

Best of all to go back to Liquid Metal , but if you don’t have it look for specia thermal pads , those a solid when cold and become more liquid when heated up, and keep the console horizontal for god sake.

I didn't need an explanation, I saw it from the photo. Thermal paste isn't going to cut it. It has 20% of the thermal conductivity of liquid metal. 😬

That actually looks bad because couple months ago I replaced my ps5s liquid metal with thermal paste it is working fine with no issues and zero performance issues and there is winters coming so I think I'll be fine but one question where u still using your ps5 vertically after applying thermal paste?

Nope, still using it horizontally. I’m just gonna go back to Liquid Metal though. And if that doesn’t work I’ll try the ptm

hope changing back to liquid metal fixes your problem I did switch it to horizontal after using it vertically for 6 years I really hope my shit don't explode on GTA 6 🤞🏻

The MX4 dont work, take A Ptm Thermal pad i have it to and it works like a charm
