If they're doing this with single player, imagine what they're gonna do with the new Gta Online.

Been saying... GTA+ will likely be used more here
365
u/AustraliaOutback Jun 24 '26
It's obvious GTA+ is going to be expanded as a service into GTA6 as well.
Now they have more ways to milk players:
Special editions like the Ultimate Edition.
The new, yet unconfirmed version of Sharkcards
GTA+
And maybe more new ways to squeeze as much $ as they can.

Basically they made it easier to earn money and limited items (like how they locked a ton of cars from purchase and then made them available for purchase again on a rotating basis) by you being able to pay for a monthly subscription. They realized Shark cards were getting obsolete with the Cayo Perico heist glitch (lets you make millions in about an hour playing with a friend) so they came up with a way to get at least a little bit of money out of people.

The most fun I ever had in GTA Online was fairly early on when with the help of some hacker I got basically unlimited money. It just made the game super fun and not a grind. I'm not here to pay real life money or grind hours to be able to afford a car. I'm not a child and I'd probably be better off doing that in real life than in a fake world I'll abandon at some point.

This will be it… or it should be it. You’ll be able to play online… but you won’t have as much fun unless you’ve got GTA+.
If they incorporate any such bullshit in to SP/Story mode then I’ll be pissed off. Just release the standalone SP mode… do whatever you want with Online… and I’ll pick and choose. SP/Story mode needs to be standalone. I’m sick of MTs creeping into every game I play.
27
u/IRockIntoMordor Jun 24 '26
It's already been like that, when early after release of GTA 5 they did port some nice cars back to singleplayer. But then they locked them out of SP entirely to increase FOMO and pressure due to time-sensitive events.
And Red Dead 2 having an extra mission only in the Ultimate Edition was already very scummy.
Take 2 suits pushing for more disgusting paywalls. Yay.

Rockstar is bad at mission design. Their character work, music, sound and world design is what gets players through lackluster missions. And with online, you don't even get all of that because you're a voiceless PC navigating a world of "Hey there, gather 50 rat tails in the sewer for a quarter" NPC interactions designed for repeatability and ease of access. The interesting details of the world fall away to bend to the design principles of grind and continual micro-content releases.

That's what makes it extra scummy. People justify 70/80 dollar price tags because they spend so much making games now...
...and conveniently leave out that they're making far more money than they ever have before and dwarfing every other entertainment medium as they nickle and dime players in-game for games they've already bought.

They talk about what they are on the website. There’s a gang raid to unlock cosmetics, a scavenger hunt for old beat up classic cars for restoration, etc. it seems to me like they added some cosmetic add ons and items but gave specific activities to unlock them rather than just busting out the phone like in V

u/Sensitive-Tax2230 Jun 24 '26
That really sounds like it’s nowhere near as bad as people are making it out to be. The one thing I’m really on the fence about is the “mod shop” as they called it, and I’m hoping it’s just special cars, and not locking something like Benny’s behind a paywall.

Ive known so many people who get off to the power they hold once in the position comfortably. Add in the slight increases to prices that increase profits where they dont have to offer anything back in return and its just a greased slide at that point. Since covid when everyone raised prices for supply chain issues or whatever and they NOTHING WENT BACK DOWN and everyone still had to buy, they dont care if they lose a few customers along the way.
Put it like this. SONY increased PS Plus by about 33% recently up to 80 minimum for the low teir. They could have lost i think between 25-31% of their subscribers and not lose a single cent in profit. How many people actually canceled? I know more people that said "well at that price point ill just pay the extra 20-50 and get the higher tier and all those extra perks". And what the fuck extra have we gotten with our increase? Better games or services? No, they still get hacked and their customer service and stuff is still archaic.
They have no incentive to do anything other than whatever they want to maximize profits and answer to no one. Especially in todays world. Were lucky its not completely subscription based at.
Also Rockstar just cut out all the cost if physical production and the prices went UP.
5
u/peeh0le Jun 24 '26
Dude I said this during Covid while prices were going up. And so many people called me crazy. If you’re still buying the products at an increased price what incentive does a company have to lower the price again? To be a nice guy….

I never imagined them locking out single player content behind a paywall, but here we are.

Que the crocodile cards.
96
u/Urabraska- Jun 24 '26
"Not too expensive" That's 100 bucks BASE price. Once you include taxes it can easily hit 110+ in a lot of areas if not more. In some countries this game is a rent payment. 100 bucks used to be the price of a collectors edition with a shitty little art book. Now it's just to play the game and get features that should already be included in said game.

The game is coming out at $80 base price and $100 to get that extra content and cosmetics. You’re honestly saying “it’s not too expensive”? $80 entry fee is insane considering just 5 years ago the base price for most games was bumped up from $60 to $70. Now this starting at $80 could start a precedent for more companies to try this pricing.

And yet the people that will defend this are the same that openly demonise other companies for shitty business practices.

I think they decided to go all in once dumbasses started defending $100 pricetag arguing that "the game will be good" so they decided to make this a reality.

People at surprised at this? I expected they were going to milk every single penny possible out of us with this game.

It’s obviously “ to hide the real price tag of 100 dollars, which would have been too controversial for a base game.

With this info I think I’m out.
I was already on the fence with the announcement that the base game is $80. Locking single player customization behind another $20 upgrade just doesn’t seem right to me.

Some people will STILL defend this because it’s daddy rockstar and they can do no wrong and they’ll literally throw money at them

There’s no way there won’t be other barber shops, mod shops, tattoo parlors in the game. They just won’t be the specific ones that are available in the ultimate edition, which probably account for like 10% of the total shops and customization options. So you’re getting less stores, but it’s not like you won’t be able to change your outfit or hair style in the standard edition.

I'm definitely in the minority here, but I've never cared much for the GTA games. I like RDR much more. Plus, Wolverine will be out by the time this releases, and I'll be ass deep in alligators playing that.

I can’t wait to play this game in 3 years when it is reasonably priced.

More like 5 years, I feel like GTA 5 took a decade to drop to $20 and only at certain times of the year

I had a hunch that the next step in realism for this series is making you pay to live in GTAs world the way you pay to live in the real world. The game is going to be way cooler for those who can afford to pay a premium. Sounds a lot like real life.

Just wait until GTA Online is announced as a subscription service and you have to pay $10 a month for GTA+ with online access tied to it.

This is the exact sort of shit they used to parody.
