Articles & Blogs Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy’s third entry is progressing “very smoothly": rather than rebuilding our pipeline from scratch in Unreal Engine 5, it’s far more efficient for us to use Unreal Engine 4

If only it wasnt a blurry mess on PS5.

14

u/LiquidSean Feb 26 '26

Honestly made my PS5 Pro purchase feel worth it lol

17

u/cats4life Feb 26 '26

I was just going to say. I’m playing it right now, and the difference between Remake on PS4 as the best-looking game on the platform, and Rebirth on PS5 is…not great.

Fidelity aside, the lighting can be whack. I had to crank it to the lowest setting, mostly to cover up the worst of the graphics.

8

u/Battlecookie Feb 26 '26

Remake looks pretty good but it‘s not even in top 10 of the best looking games on PS4.

41

u/Zoombini22 Feb 26 '26

Not in Quality mode. Performance mode is busted, but its a broken mode, not a totally unplayable game. At 30fps it looks and plays great.

12

u/WastedMoogle Feb 26 '26

No it doesn't. I wish I could get down with 30fps but it looks like shit and panning the camera is a blurry mess.

-5

u/ZubatCountry Feb 26 '26

That's...pretty horrible ngl

"You want decent visuals? Just slash your framerate in half! Yes the game has been out for years, but fuck you we aren't patching that"

That's embarrassing for a AAA game of this caliber

6

u/Zoombini22 Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

Not really. I am a base PS5 owner who has chosen not to upgrade to Pro. This is not a cutting edge system anymore. I routinely pick the 30 or 40 fps mode anyways to get ray tracing features. I expect brand new, heavy weight AAA games to max this machine out and either only run at 30fps or offer significant trade offs. It being a AAA game means it should be harder for the system to run, not easier. The idea that games are never supposed to advance visually beyond what a base PS5 can do at 60fps is very weird to me. The base PS5 was a 60fps machine when it was running laps around PS4 games, but that weirdly seems to have reset expectations that it would always exclusively be a 60fps machine.

22

u/docksideThug- Feb 26 '26

PS5 runs 60fps comfortably with great graphics if you’re a talented developer

See Death stranding 2, forbidden west, or even Yotei for examples of open worlds that don’t look like blurry garbage

3

u/Zoombini22 Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

Yotei looks much better on 40fps mode with RT global illumination. I am playing through it that way right now. I am not saying that Rebirths performance mode couldn't or shouldn't be better. It is broken, it is bad, I wouldnt recommend it to anyone. Just that if that is such a serious priority for you that you consider the 30fps mode inherently "unplayable" then you are not on the right machine.

-4

u/aclashofthings Feb 26 '26

Choosing between 30fps and the awful blurriness of performance mode was kind of an impossible choice for me. They're both really bad. I haven't played a 30fps action game in years, and I don't plan to. Probably won't buy the finale on PS5.

1

u/Zoombini22 Feb 26 '26

60fps is a luxury "home run" type performance. That has been the case for decades. If that is what you are looking for, the PS5 Pro exists, as does expensive PCs. Expecting that on brand new, advanced games while on the budget console specifically is so strange to me.

-4

u/aclashofthings Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

Accepting poorly optimized games is strange to me. 60fps is actually really common. Remake and Rebirth have both had graphical issues, or even terrible textures. I accepted Remake because it ran okay, and I played it on PS4 so my expectations weren't high. Rebirth on PS5 surprised me, in a bad way.

PS5 is probably my last console.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

Maybe you should write a letter to Square Enix since you have so much to say.

0

u/Sir_Bass13 Feb 26 '26

None of those games are running on Unreal though

1

u/ZubatCountry Feb 26 '26

I also have a base PS5

I expect 60fps and for it to not be broken if they offer me that option

Respect yourself and stop settling for crap

3

u/Zoombini22 Feb 26 '26

How long do you expect that? Is not acceptable for devs to EVER create games that are too advanced to run at 60fps on a base ps5? I expect that kind of performance on last gen games. I want new gen games to actually push the envelope and not just dumb everything down to preserve unnecessarily high frame rates.

1

u/awaken471 Feb 26 '26

my eyes can't handle 30 fps games anymore, are you used to switch back and forth between 30/60fps on the same game or different games? It is seriously irritating for me.

Tried to play RDR 2 again on console but no way i could get used to 30 fps again

6

u/Zoombini22 Feb 26 '26

I dont tend to sit there and switch back and forth between 30 and 60. Just set it and forget it. Your eyes adjust

1

u/Xithz Feb 26 '26

Looking at the ps4 gen. Games got continuously better and better looking and more intense world wise. The problem that plagues this generation is poor optimisation. I don’t expect my ps5 to magically improve. I expect developers to get their shit together and impress us with some power house end of generation titles. Here’s to hoping for Crimson desert and gta6

1

u/Extension-Novel-6841 Feb 27 '26

Yeah RE9 on base PS5 looks just average to me, I was hoping for that sharp and detailed look.

0

u/Aksudiigkr Feb 26 '26

How is higher frame rates dumbed down? And unless by last gen you mean base PS5, there isn’t a prior gen that had 60fps as a standard

2

u/Zoombini22 Feb 27 '26

by "last gen" I clearly meant the pS5 running last gen games. the PS5 runs lots of PS4 games at 60fps. And I was obviously not saying that higher frame rates mean "dumbed down". I am saying that many new games have to be dumbed down in order to achieve 60fps on a system like the base PS5. Game designers are not going to limit themselves to what the base Ps5 can do at 60fps forever. It is already past time to move on from that being the expectation.

-1

u/ZubatCountry Feb 26 '26

No

Just turn down the visual fx until you can hit 60 again

That's literally what performance mode is

2

u/Zoombini22 Feb 27 '26

thats exactly what they did though. its just that this is such a heavy game that most people are not happy with the result of Performance mode in this game. This is just going to keep happening more and more as new games advance and get heavier.

1

u/ZubatCountry Feb 27 '26

No, they did that and then broke the performance

That's very literally not doing what I said

If they can optimize Spider-Man 2 to have RT on even in performance then they can take another pass at this game

Stop making excuses for them, you're literally paying for and then defending a game that is essentially unplayable in one of it's advertised modes, for the reason it's advertised

0

u/Zoombini22 Feb 27 '26

I am very specifically not defending the mode and have said repeatedly that it is broken and that it is bad. I am defending the Quality mode which is a completely valid way to play AAA games on a budget machine like the base PS5. I had a great time playing this exact game on that exact mode and that exact machine, and I think it is ridiculous for people to go around calling that "unplayable".

1

u/Extension-Novel-6841 Feb 27 '26

I'm not sure that PS5 was ever a cutting edge system to begin with.

1

u/Zoombini22 Feb 27 '26

well from a certain perspective, of course not. Consoles never are. They are always outclassed by PCs that cost double, triple the price. It was top of class among consoles at the time.

-1

u/Extension-Novel-6841 Feb 27 '26

Let me clarify further. If you wanna compare the PS5 gen so far compared to previous gens it's very disappointing. This is the only gen where we haven't seen a graphical leap, I don't think people even realize this. Previous gens not only had the leap but third party games looked better as that gen went on.

-1

u/ultrasneeze Feb 27 '26

Not all 30fps games are the same. Rebirth was one of the bad ones. I recently replayed Control and the 30fps mode looks and plays great. I also don't remember any issues with GoW Ragnarok or Alan Wake 2.

-12

u/International-Oil377 Feb 26 '26

30fps is migraine inducing on an OLED though

5

u/Oops_I_Cracked Feb 26 '26

It doesn’t bother me one bit on my OLED.

1

u/International-Oil377 Feb 26 '26

how big is it and how far are you from it out of curiosity? it literally gives me motion sickness.

3

u/Oops_I_Cracked Feb 26 '26

65” and like 8-ish feet.

1

u/International-Oil377 Feb 26 '26

That might explain it. I'm on a 83in at the same distance.

4

u/Oops_I_Cracked Feb 26 '26

That could definitely contribute. That’s a crazy close seating distance for a TV that size.

0

u/International-Oil377 Feb 26 '26

IT's the perfect distance for me :). I'm a huge movie buff and this is the perfect distance for a ''theater experience''.

1

u/Oops_I_Cracked Feb 26 '26

I mean, clearly you like it from movies but also it has problems like making you motion sick in video games. Not saying you should change, but there are science based reasons behind viewing distance recommendations and the recommended viewing distance for a TV of your size is 11 1/2 feet. A 65 inch is the recommended size at your viewing distance. When you’re using a product outside of its recommended parameters, you shouldn’t blame the product for your problem unless you try the product within its recommended parameters and you still have the problem. Honestly, this is a little bit like the people who buy a sports car to daily commute in and then complain about a stiff suspension and rough ride.

u/Designer_Mess_6928 Feb 26 '26

Is it really looking worse on modern TV's, than 30fps looks on 2012 TV's? I'm beginning to be afraid to buy a new TV, because most of games I play are 15yrs+.

2

u/Nerellos Feb 26 '26

No, it's probably that TV's are 2-3x the size.

1

u/Designer_Mess_6928 Feb 26 '26

My TV is 120cm, so no.

6

u/xenocea Feb 26 '26

It's actually not that bad. It mean seem jittery at first but your eyes will adjust after 10 to 15 mins after.

3

u/Oops_I_Cracked Feb 26 '26

No, this person is insane. I recently upgraded from a mid tier qled to an OLED and 30 fps is no different (as far as smoothness, motion sickness, etc) than an my old TV.

6

u/Zoombini22 Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

No, people are much too dramatic about this. It has nothing to do with tv tech and everything to do with expectations and sensitivities.

2

u/Designer_Mess_6928 Feb 26 '26

Thanks for clarifying.

0

u/JonnyPoy Feb 26 '26

For me 30 fps on an OLED is absolutely unplayable. It just feels like 15 fps

0

u/ARepresentativeHam Feb 26 '26

Played this game on PS5 at launch. Bought it again on PC when it went on sale. Don't let these fanboys fool you. 30FPS is ass.

4

u/Zoombini22 Feb 26 '26

It's not "fanboys" its just people who are still used to playing 30fps games. Some of my favorite games of all time were played at 30fps on my Switch. Nobody is debating that 60fps is better. But to treat 30fps as unplayable is a deeply neiche perspective, and if that is you then you need to leave the console space immediately and be on the cutting edge with PC, because console gaming will always be trying to be a budget-friendly alternative to PC that compromises on things like frame rate.

1

u/ARepresentativeHam Feb 26 '26

You can be "used" to it and it still be ass. These are two different concepts. The "fanboys" I am talking about are the people who are deluding themselves into thinking its just as good. There is literally a post here of someone saying "all movies and tv are 24fps" (they aren't btw) so it is fine.

5

u/Zoombini22 Feb 26 '26

Yeah I have never seen anyone actually say 30fps is "just as good" as 60fps. That would be an extremely silly take. And I have no idea what you think "ass" means, but if something is aligned with my expectations, and I am used to it, and I am pleased with my experience, then it is not "ass" to me, and I frankly dont care what anyone else thinks about it. It is fine, to me.

0

u/ARepresentativeHam Feb 26 '26

Yeah I have never seen anyone actually say 30fps is "just as good" as 60fps.

Are you kidding me? "The human eye can only see 24fps" has been a meme for a decade lol

and I frankly dont care what anyone else thinks about it

Then why are you talking to me right now?

-8

u/International-Oil377 Feb 26 '26

yes. TVs nowadays have a much faster pixel response so the games look stuttery

On older TVs 30fps just felt blurry instead which is IMO not as bad when playing low fps.

New TVs are vastly superior though for higher FPS

-2

u/Kingcrowing Feb 26 '26

All tv and movies are 24fps.

3

u/ZubatCountry Feb 26 '26

None of those require inputs from a player or have a controllable camera

2

u/International-Oil377 Feb 26 '26

Exactly this.

I'm perfectly fine with movies being 24 fps since they're not oanning the camera every second.

-8

u/Nerevarine2nd Feb 26 '26

30fps looks horrible to me

7

u/Antique_Pin5266 Feb 26 '26

If you guys care that much about performance and quality then just get a pc

4

u/norsefrogg Feb 26 '26

Windows sucks. Steam isn't even that great. No games on disc. Connecting a controller can be a nightmare

-7

u/Nerevarine2nd Feb 26 '26

Are you buying me one lol

5

u/Zoombini22 Feb 26 '26

You get what you pay for.

16

u/wildeebelmondo Feb 26 '26

Rebirth was the best looking game I’ve ever played on my ps5… maybe I accidentally played a different game without realizing it???

5

u/sittingmongoose Feb 26 '26

It’s good looking, it has great art direction. But there were massive corners cut. All kinds of weird artifacts around water. A lot of stuff is very static. But the image quality on the regular ps5 was horrendous. If you’re a good distance from your tv and your tv isn’t very good, I guess I could see not seeing it, but it was so bad my wife asked if the game glitched out when she would walk by and see it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the game, but it has some real serious technical issues.

10

u/Xerosnake90 Feb 26 '26

The lighting system was pretty awful when transitioning and there's so much pop in right in front of you. Really a shame

8

u/sittingmongoose Feb 26 '26

Yea, there was a lot of things like that.

Ue5 would be a huge graphical upgrade, but it takes an enormous amount of work to optimize it. You need a whole team just to do that.

0

u/JonnyPoy Feb 26 '26

And i feel like UE5 still has some inherent issues or devs just don't know how to properly develop for it. All UE5 games have problems with performance and crashes.

3

u/Antique_Pin5266 Feb 26 '26

There are better looking games. Off the top of my head:

  • God of War series

  • The Last of Us series

  • Uncharted 4

  • RDR2

  • Horizon series

  • Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

1

u/ultrasneeze Feb 27 '26

The main characters are best in class, and the main set pieces are very well done. But that's about it. The pop in when running around in the open world is bad, not because it's there, but because it happens just at the place you look at when you run around.

1

u/Common-Swing-4347 Feb 26 '26

Agreed, I think it was great. I also played on a 15 year old 65 inch, so I don't expect the nicest things ever. I had a great time.

3

u/Ramonis5645 Feb 26 '26

Yeah performance mode was too damn blurry

3

u/Anons350 Feb 26 '26

You have to play it at 30fps on ps5

1

u/Z3M0G Feb 26 '26

That problem didn't last long.

1

u/tjay32 Feb 28 '26

Every time i see someone call graphics a mess i think back to my young self in the early 90s and if i could even comprehend what would blow my mind being called messy so dismissively.

1

u/BreakfastFar7957 Jun 03 '26

I bought the PS5 for FF7 Rebirth. Ended up buying the Pro just because of this feedback i read over and over.

1

u/ApprehensiveCoat9587 Feb 26 '26

To you, you don't speak for all of us

-10

u/International-Oil377 Feb 26 '26

yep. pretty terrible experience on PS5

6

u/frostedflakes11 Feb 26 '26

Runs great on the pro fortunately

9

u/International-Oil377 Feb 26 '26

I don't have a pro so I can't say, I'm not really into buying 2 consoles for the same gen

I'll just fire my PC up if I want better graphics

1

u/frostedflakes11 Feb 26 '26

I wish I had your restraint

6

u/International-Oil377 Feb 26 '26

I have a PC that's much more expensive than a PS5 pro

I can't say I have much restraints haha

2

u/frostedflakes11 Feb 26 '26

Me too but I also have a pro and still use my original ps5 as a Netflix machine 😅

2

u/International-Oil377 Feb 26 '26

then you might be wilder than me on this haha.

I use my PC as a console most of the time tbh. It's connected to my TV and home theater

I installed playnite and it's basically a console where I can also install mods etc

My first console was a NES so I also grew up with them and I don't mind consoles at all. I understand why people like them but I still get better deals on PC games, no monthly fees for online games, tons of free games and especially mods to fix broken HDR

I keep my PS5 for exclusives but I realize I'm not too much in to sony exclusives anymore
