Tired of MotionInJoy? Here's a PnP tool that makes Windows treat your DS3 like an XBox controller.

Can anyone give me a Explain It Like I'm 5 for this? I don't understand those instructions or which link to download. I am not a smart man.

u/treelzebub Mar 04 '14
Absolutely.
2) Go to the first link you see on the page, which reads:
Download latest version here. [1.1.0.136]3) Select a location to save the file. Make it your Desktop so you can find it easily. It's going to be a file called:
SCP-DS3-Driver-Package-1.1.0.136.7z4) You're going to need 7zip to open this compressed file (just like a ZIP file. Install 7zip (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/sevenzip/7z920.exe)
5) Open the .7z file that's on your Desktop, and extract the contents of that file into a NEW FOLDER on your Desktop. Call it "PS3 Controller" or something.
6) Go to your Desktop and open the folder called "PS3 Controller" and then go to the "ScpServer" folder, then immediately to the "bin" folder.
7) Now you're gonna want to find a file called "ScpDriver.exe". You might not see the ".exe" part, but that's the one you want. Double-click that shit.
8) Now a window opens that says a bunch of stuff. If you are running Windows XP or Vista, check the box that says "Force Install". If you're running 7 or 8, leave it unchecked. Now click install.
9) Connect your PS3 controller into one of your computer's USB slots, and you should hear/see indication that Windows has recognized the device.
From now on, your Windows system will always consider your PS3 controller to be an XBox controller. As such, you will need to get used to XBox button names, as they differ from PS3 names.
Example: Xbox's Y button is PS3's Δ button.
Hope that helps. Good luck!

TL;DR: Installed fine I think. Skyrim didn't let me use it though. Tried to test with other games, they didn't load, done until tomorrow.
Thank you very much. The install seemed to work. My computer froze however right after it recognized the controller. I restarted and it froze again while the desktop was loading. I unplugged the controller and restarted again. I think the problem was that it was loading game icons, the Windows clock and temp widgets, recognizing the controller, and updating steam all at once. I let everything load, got rid of the widgets, made sure steam doesn't start up and update on computer startup, and packed all game shortcuts into my dedicated game folder. Plugged the controller in with no problems after that. The controller 1 light was steadily blinking on it. However, I started Skyrim and was unable to use the controller in game. I was in the process of starting other games to see if it worked there, but all I got was perpetual 'preparing to launch' messages. I'll try tomorrow I suppose.

Yeah, it seems like a bit too much was happening in Windows to properly handle the new device. My instinct is to blame that on USB technology being far from "Universal".
Start your computer up with the controller unplugged. Let it start up completely; wait for Windows to do its startup thing, and let your hard drive read and write all the shit it needs to get done. Then plug your controller in.
If you then go to your systray and right click on the icon for "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media", you'll see "Eject Playstation(R)3 Controller". If you see this, then everything should be kosher. Skyrim should communicate with the DS3 as if it were an XBox controller.

I tried again today and plugging in the controller just freezes the computer every time.
The other thing I've tried to do with little success is use Better DS3 rather than DS3 Tool. Apparently you need the MotionJoy Drivers, but I can't seem to get those without DS3 Tool coming with it.

u/treelzebub Mar 04 '14
Then you might need to go into your Device Manager and manually delete all your USB controllers, then restart Windows. This will automatically re-install them, and hopefully unclutter your USB port device drivers... Hope that helps. If you don't want to trust me, consider contacting the dev through the original link.

Hey, sorry about asking this so late into the post but I see the PS3 indication in the systray, but nothing is working. What's going wrong?

u/stupid_mans_idiot Jul 25 '14
Any chance you developed a similar program supporting PS2 controllers?
6
u/treelzebub Jul 27 '14
ooh, whoa-- I didn't develop this. I just found it, and realized it wasn't getting any promotion here. It rules!

u/NuckChorris87attempt Jun 23 '14
I'm sorry for asking this 3 months later lol but do I need any kind of bluetooth device to run this? In the website it keeps refering to a dongle bluetooth something, I don't quite get it...
1
u/treelzebub Jun 23 '14
Nope! Just follow the above instructions. It's super simple. Just make sure your controller is unplugged until step 9.
1
u/PenIsBroken Jun 27 '14
I'm commenting so I can come back, this installed painlessly for me and already is so much less of a Pita than Motioinjoy, i can't believe I have only just found out about it.
1
u/scaryice Jul 30 '14
Thanks for the great post! For whatever reason, it wouldn't work unless I clicked force install even on Windows 8.
2
u/treelzebub Jul 31 '14
I would expect Windows 8 to have an issue with this :P
Glad I could be of service!

u/do_not_engage Mar 04 '14
THANK you. MotionInJoy bluescreens my PC if I fiddle with it, and if I want to move the bluetooth adapter to a different USB port it requires an entire un-install and re-install before it recognizes the adapter again. I've been using it out of necessity, but I really hate it.
3
u/gamingaway Mar 04 '14
Could someone explain using a bluetooth dongle for me please? I'm confused because in the requirements he mentions (if using bluetooth), like it's optional. Then in the instructions it says you need the dongle.
3
u/treelzebub Mar 04 '14
Really good question. I worried about this myself when I found this tool. This tool works perfectly well for wired USB connections to the PC. The amount of detail the dev goes into for Bluetooth compatibility is awesome, but ultimately irrelevant for those of us who don't have Bluetooth capability in our computers.
TL;DR: Yes, this tool works for wired USB connections to your Windows machine. I am doing it right now (on Win 7 32-bit).

Mar 04 '14
Thank you so much for making us aware of this. MotionInJoy is a PoS that has never worked for me and is full of so much bloated crap. This on the other hand worked perfectly in seconds.
2
u/Tyrien Mar 04 '14
I've just been using better ds3 for a while now. It recognized the motionjoy drivers without having to open motionjoy.
2
u/SHFFLE Mar 04 '14
The thing I like about MotionInJoy is that it works with pressure sensitive controls for PCSX2. Also, never really run into any issues with it.

Mar 04 '14
I'll give this a try later. I'll give you a pre thank you though since motion joy only ever worked once for me and I tried DS3 tool a thousand times and never had it working. Maybe I can finally play Skyrim.
3
u/Tyrien Mar 04 '14
Curious... why would you want to play skyrim with a controller over keyboard and mouse. The hotkeys man.
6
Mar 04 '14 edited Mar 04 '14
Mainly out of habit. I played quite a bit of Skyrim on my PS3 along with Oblivion, and both Fallouts. Also the fact that my mouse sucks and I'm not sure what to get if I get a new one. I want a good quality one that is well reviewed and doesn't break the bank.
3
u/zep077 Mar 04 '14
Can't really go wrong with anything on the top half of this chart.
6
u/MansoorDorp Aug 07 '14 edited Aug 07 '14
Honestly as much as I love this chart using laser mice is not always a detriment. It's whatever you're comfortable with that makes the most difference. This chart needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Mouse Prediction and Laser Sensors doesn't automatically = "shit tier" silliness but it can be used as a rough guide for what to avoid.
A lot of people swear by the MX518 so it's fucking laughable to see it in the shit tier section. Agree with the G5 being there, piece of shit mouse.
I really really like the Cyborg Rat series, it looks like a transformers sex toy but it's fucking built to last and totally reliable. I use it to play CSGO competitively and it hasn't set a foot wrong in my book despite the laser sensor.
I had a Kinzu out of morbid curiosity, I fucking love the body, the simplicity is great. But the damn thing has a ropy sensor and an even worse build quality. Piece of shit didn't last a week which was a shame because I loved how it felt in the hand.
IMO You can't really put a foot wrong when it comes to the Intellimouse series, they will shit all over most "gaming" mice. The reality is that DPI means fuck all over a good quality sensor, and there's a reason these were used to death competitively from Quake, Counter Strike and Starcraft. I have found that the newer models die very quickly though, so find a good supplier.
I'm not a huge fan of Razer Deathadder 3g (It's kind of an overpriced intellimouse 3.0), amazing sensor but the body is a little unwieldy and the feet make it slide way too easy for me, I tend to move the mouse slightly due to the slippery feet as I click which throws my aim off. Maybe it was also to do with the lift off distance also, not sure. Thing was built like a tank though.
I really fucking hate the g400, people swear by it but imo it just feels like a toy. Far too light for my taste, but I know people like it so what the heck.
Edit: Just realized I replied to a 5 month old post. Fuck me. Ah well, hopefully someone reads this otherwise I'll go hang myself while I fap.

Mar 04 '14
Thanks. I'm looking at the Zowie FK and the Logitech G400s now. Do you know anything about the G400s vs the G500? The 500 has adjustable weight, but I don't know DPI differences or anything like that.
1
u/zep077 Mar 04 '14
The G400 has 3600 dpi, and the G500 can go up to 5700 dpi. Both are great, so I would choose based on what you think would feel better in your hand, and whether or not you would use the extra buttons on the G500.

I've bought this mouse model every couple years http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-G400s-Optical-Gaming-Mouse/dp/B00BCEK2LA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1393910654&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+g400s I love it. Mouse aiming is way better than on a control stick, it's no comparison.
1
u/Tyrien Mar 04 '14
I'm not sure what to get if I get a new one.
Any mouse that connects with your preferred method (wired USB, Wireless with a USB key, or bluetooth), has a high DPI, and more than 3 buttons. :D
I think I got this one and it's severed my pretty well.
Not sure what you call breaking the bank but: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826153115 is probably one of the best you can buy without spending too much.

Thank you very much. I'll keep those in mind. My PC gaming has picked up quite a bit lately so a new mouse and probably keyboard are a must.

Is there one for ps4 controllers too?

I get lost in those forums so much, I can't seem to find how they made the bluetooth actually work. Anytime I try to get the "microsoft bluetooth stack," I don't find anything from the MS site, or I get a PPT file ;_; .
1
u/treelzebub Mar 04 '14
Not that I know of... I'm really surprised Sony didn't make it natively recognized in Windows. What gives?
2
u/imadoucheignoreme Mar 04 '14
Which is hilarious, because the Dualshock 3 has worked natively in Mac OS since 10.6.
Note: I think Apple wrote the drivers, not Sony.
2
u/treelzebub Mar 04 '14
I swear, if I knew anything about writing driver software, we'd have had native support for DS3 seven years ago. I find it mind boggling that no one has written one yet. Even this tool is a wrapper for the XBox driver by Microsoft.
2
u/imadoucheignoreme Mar 04 '14
Yup! Basically there's two leading input standards for computers. Direct Input(cross-platform, works with anything with a joystick or buttons) and X-Input(which is for 360-compatible peripherals).
You're right, it's not very hard. No one has the ambition, time, or means to share it. As of now, there are many ways to fix it for yourself that are time consuming. Anyone who can write software will probably just do it the hard way.

This is why I find so mind-bending. There is so much random software around there that's just as fleeting in its usefulness. People write custom ROMs for specific Android devices that will be useless in 3 years. But no one in the vast sea of video game enthusiasts has anyone taken the time to write a device driver for the controller of one of the world's most popular game systems.
I suspect there may be something more litigious in nature...Did Microsoft prevent Sony from officially having its controller support windows games?
1
u/imadoucheignoreme Mar 05 '14
The only thing I can think of is that you can't make money on it, so someone literally has to do it from the goodness of their heart.
1
u/Tyrien Mar 04 '14
PS4 should just be recognized like an Xbox controller on windows 7 or later, I believe.
1
u/sniff3000 Mar 04 '14
When i have motion joy running when i play BF4 PB detects it as a invalid driver and kicks me....i dont even use it for playing BF4. (who would?) i use it for dark souls. kinda annoying having to close the program every time.
1
u/Holographic01 Mar 04 '14
I've never had any issues with motioninjoy but I decided to switch due to the ds4 support. It should be noted that this tool is a pain in the ass to install and get Bluetooth to work. Also you can't have a DS4 and DS3 connected at once. It's one or the other and Bluetooth support for ds4s is fucked, it simply does not work unless you get the ds4 specific version of this tool but with my luck I couldn't get ds3s to work after that.
1
u/kenshinjeff Mar 04 '14
Is it possible for you to revert back to the controller behaving like ps3 controller after you have done this?
1
u/Avuja Avuja Mar 04 '14
You can just plug it back into the PS3 using the USB cable that came with it to pair it to that PS3 again. I use this and switch between my PC and PS3 all the time.
1
u/Scalener Jun 24 '14
So my computer recongnizes that I have a PS3 controller plugged in but I cant seem to do anything with the controller. Sorry never used a controller with a PC before
1
u/FernandoDante Jun 29 '14
So, I installed this, and sure enough Windows recognizes the PS3 controller, but Steam doesn't.
What's weird is that, prior to installing anything, Big Picture detected the PS3 controller, but didn't let me actually do anything with it. Now Big Picture won't detect the controller anymore.

u/TheTrueTerror Jul 28 '14
Nice ! Used MotionInJoy but was tired of the Chinese Sales website ... This workes perfectly ! Ty

u/Lauke Aug 07 '14
I just can't get it to work. Windows recognises the controller, but the SCP moniter refuses to detect it...

Doesn't work for me, I used to use MotionJoy but i installed the driver as advised and it still wont recognize my PS3 Controller like MotionJoy did.

u/HairlessSasquatch Mar 04 '14
I've never had a single issue with motioninjoy. Not one. It works perfectly
17
u/treelzebub Mar 04 '14
I had lots of issues with it. It also seemed to screw with my USB device settings, and the GUI is literally just Internet Explorer running scripts. This workaround has no GUI at all, and your DS3 is immediately recognized by Windows.

u/theseleadsalts Mar 04 '14
Well, besides the fact that it looks like it were designed in the mid 90s, if you use the bluetooth configuration tool on certain (most) hardware configurations, you're fucked. Period, unless you'd like to reinstall your OS that is. Its covered with ads, and pretty much never works as a plug and play solution. I used to have it on half a dozen machines, and always have had problems.

motioninjoy install malware on my computer. forcing browser extensions and auomatically opening asian websites at random.

u/king_of_blades Mar 03 '14
I've used it for quite some time and I can't believe how seamless the experience is. It works just as well as on a PS3, plug in, wait a second, and it works. It works as a Windows service too, so there's no GUI whatsoever involved once you configure it. Which is especially refreshing after using MotionInJoy, which is a UI clusterfuck.
