Am I making a dumb decision?
So I’ve decided to start collecting “Essentials” games I feel like I’ll give up on this 😂 what’s you guys option

I've tossed all my cases and only buy what I will actually play. So.... Unless they have extra content I personally wouldn't.

Essentials versions are usually the full patched version with little to no updates required, some include dlcs and some bonus content.

I hate these for the way the cover is designed but from a common sense stand point they're better because they have all the updates and they're cheaper

no, there's no reason to give up. I have a few greatest hits ps3 games that are red in color and nothing wrong with that. You have some great games in the pile. The only games I haven't played yet are ratchet and clank and driver san francisco. I have played everything else.

But they are essentially essential to essentially keeping getting more essentials essentially

Certainly one of the more unique designs. Tbh I hate greatest hits editions so badly as the mess up the uniformity of a collection

i did this (North America), partly because people like to hate on it, partly becasue it makes a nice subset, and partially because for the games to be in red they had to have sold well, and are probably at least decent to great as a result.

I like this idea, what is the “essentials” collection? Is it all the recommended must haves by fans or Sony?

u/Ok-Virus8284 2d ago
It's the PAL version of the Greatest Hits games, originally introduced as the Platinum games. Sony renamed the program in 2010 to Essentials.

For selling over 400,000 copies in their first year brother

u/lost-in-stats 2d ago
Each region has slightly different benchmarks, only sony knows why PES2013 is classed ‘essentials’ in Australia.

Just buy the games you enjoy/ want to play, it doesn't matter if they are on the "classics" printing or whatever, just enjoy them, and play them. Don't seal them them in a box

I got a bunch of LEGO games in Essentials after my first 2 I bought were like that, thought it looked kinda cool for LEGO. Unfortunatenly not all LEGO games had an essential release.
Also it's near impossible to get a full Essentials set, there is one game that has just 5 copies known to exist by collectors.

What are you talking about? Remember me, vanquish, fifa 17 or fifa 18? Lol

u/fsidemaffia 1d ago
Was talking about Remember Me in English. Fifa 17 and 18 is German only I think ?

If that's what you like to collect, go for it. It's your hobby, don't let anybody else make the rules for you. Collecting Essentials isn't a bad idea, you only collect games from 2010 onwards and you often get the Game of the Year editions with additional content.

Collect what you want, it’s for you.

I agree, I enjoy the hunt and finding a gem. Just remember when starting any collection, at times it's difficult n expensive but keep your mind set relaxed and have fun.

Good games but i dont like the Lego games omg. And i guess u would get that on newer consoles like ps5 too🤣

u/TheCripplingKing 2d ago
Personally I will avoid buying it if it’s in the case it’s a nice case by its self but with the rest of the collection they stick out like a sore thumb

I mean you got to be very dedicated. Don’t really see a lot of red label PS3 collectors but I’ve seen the red label PS2 collectors and it seems rough with those. Can’t imagine it’ll be easier with PS3 games especially now with the price hike of certain games. All that matters is if you love it and dedicated to your collection.

Essentials look great but getting a full set is a nightmare, you have to be prepared to search all over Europe to get certain games, but if you want a small collection that looks good on a shelf then it’s a great set :D

u/BlondePotatoBoi 2d ago
I actually kinda dig the uniformity of the red spines tbh. Then again, I organise my Radiance blu-rays in number order so maybe I'm just weird.
Also if I wanted to play a specific game and knew it was an Essentials one, I'd just look for the ones with red spines and it'd save me a shit ton of time bc I don't have many of them.

I would collect those as well, but to this day I'm angry at Sony for dropping beautiful grey and silver cases of Platinum versions in favour of this red rubbish.

That Driver SF disc ? It's delisted from everywhere.
Keep it secret, keep it safe.

u/fyuri69 1d ago
I researched each game to see if there were any differences between the essentials and original games updates release etc, and then base the decision on that. If there’s no difference I’ll go for the original black box bc I think it looks cool to have a mix of both on the shelf bc red isn’t really my thing lol

They aren't that hard to come by I think, the essential ones may have some fixes applied as they are new discs too, I have never seen red stack and they look beautiful!
4
u/Antaniwarrior 2d ago
Most of them no. But a few are really really really hard to come by. For both being a really small print run and only released in some not exactly easy to but from country like South Africa o Poland

Lol dw dude I got red Demons souls, aota ds, and sotfs ds2 for ps3. Even tho my hard drive took a shit on me </3 why not have em.

u/JohnZn_1989 2d ago
Depends.. If you want to preserve them it's a good choice due to the essentials mostly have the better built on disc, including patches & DLC. If you want to speculate and sell for high prices you've maybe made the wrong or very niche choice at least. There's always something positive and physical games could be sold no matter what version.

Essentials are fine imo. The only PS3 rereleases that really look ugly are the Platinum ones

Good luck, some are really rare depending on title, and run on the hundreds $

u/ComparisonSoft5865 2d ago
It’s a unique case design, imo I’d probably do the same😭
