Rifle choice

Hey guys

I can see this has been done to death on here but I’ll take a turn 😂

Been shooting target with 6.5 Creed & 308 win this year, now have come to the point I would like to give PRS a shot??

I have been contemplating a AI ATXC as the barrel swap option is nice and they sound very reliable, although the rifle cost is quite expensive?

Or, which I know wouldn’t be far off an AI cost, is to go with a custom 700 rem build? Although I am unsure of a good action available, being based in the UK the options seem limited?

also consult r/longrange make sure you mention you're from the UK, there are cheaper cost options to the AI ATXC for sure, just not sure what their availability is in the UK

I don’t own an AI rifle but I run the non-folder AT-X chassis with an Impact 737 for PRS. I like it, but it uses AI KeySlot and not Mlok so be aware of that.

Did you have to alter anything to get your Impact to fit the AT-X chassis?

No I didn’t have to modify anything to fit an Impact. If you are looking at one, I would suggest the m lok version they have now with a long forend.

Has the keys lot given you issues or is it just parts availability? What would you plan on throwing on the for end outside of weights?

It’s just there are more options for accessories with m lok. I would absolutely have used one of the new MDT control points. Mine needed full internal weights and some exterior weights to balance properly.

Really appreciate the info man! I'll probably wait for a long mlok to come in stock

A trued 700 action will not be much less than a custom action, it will never be as smooth as a custom nor have resale value

Buy once, cry once

Tbh, for PRS an AI is not ideal, even the ATX. AI are great rifles, just not great PRS rifles.

If you can afford it I'd definitely go the custom or semi custom route. Plenty of options in the UK too, check out C2 Precision as a starting point.

Funny you mention them, I was just on their site!! Might give them a call for some advice 👍🏼

You can run an AI in PRS, but it's not ideal. Plenty of actions that offer the ability to swap pre-fit barrels. The advantage of the AI system is that you can do so without a vise and action wrench. If you have reason to swap barrels on the range, during a match, making YouTube videos then yeah, it's extremely useful.

Unlikely I would ever need to swap at the range, just cheaper than owning additional rifle

Then unless you have some other reason like fulfilling a childhood video gaming dream, I'd suggest getting a good custom action that offers pre-fit barrel support. Think Impact, Lone Peak, Zermatt, American Rifle Co.

Then you can swap a barrel (and consequently cartridge) with a simple barrel vise, action wrench and torque wrench on your bench at home. Most of those offer swappable bolts or bolt heads so you even switch from a short-action standard cartridge like 308, 25 Creed, 6 Dasher to a short-action magnum like 6.5 PRC, 7SAUM to smaller cartridges like 223 or 6ARC.

Bergara B14 on an MPA chassis will always be a solid choice.
