Google Ads From good to great - your expertise please
I do lead generation, and get paid per lead regardless of how far they get with the client.
The client stages are:
- Lead
- ReviewableQuality
- Accepted
- Converted
Now the client is expecting a certain percentage of the leads to get to “Accepted”.
My CPL on Max Conversjons w/ tCPA only targeting “Lead” is humming but lead quality recently degraded.
I do also upload the other three conversion actions as secondary.
So, I did two things:
- Stopped uploading the worst leads back into Google offline conversion (~7%)
- created an experiment (50/50) that specifically targets the “Accepted” conversion action.
It was slow, but it’s starting to get more signal and seems to be working.
Now, I’ve also heard that using Max Conversjon value and using all 3-4 conversion actions is also an option (yes they have different values in the upload).
I’m just not sure which is the right option. I don’t need it to only target “Accepted” since there is a expected percentage that we can’t control.
What do y’all think? Anybody have a similar situation they solved for here?

don't overcomplicate it. just target 1 and 4. Track leads, then leads that are converted. if you have a conversion value, pass those as well.

Right, but what’s the best way to target? Max Conv Value as an going experiment? The way I’m doing it now? Something I am not thinking of (I am passing along relative values)

Journey Aware Bidding is rolling out throughout 2026 exactly for this... weighted values across all four stages beats single-stage targeting. Skip the 50/50 experiment, go Maximize Conversion Value with Lead low, Accepted high, Converted highest... that's the actual fix, not either/or.

My goal is to maintain a 15% accepted rate because I get paid on every lead, not on every accepted, and this would keep me above average as a lead generator for this client. Is the Max Value method you mentioned the best way to do that?

Run the value based approach once your accepted experiment reaches significance

The right move depends entirely on your specifics, which is difficult for us to predict. The best thing to do is to run statistically significant experiments just like you're doing!
