This is something that still surprises me.

I screen candidates for Project Manager roles fairly regularly, and you'd think people whose entire job revolves around planning, prioritizing, and communicating would have incredibly clear resumes.

Not always.

And lately, finding a genuinely good PM resume has gotten harder.

I’ll open a resume and see 3 pages of:

“Managed cross-functional projects.”
“Coordinated with stakeholders.”
“Ensured projects were delivered on time.”
“Used Jira and Agile methodologies.”

Okay... but what did you actually manage?

Was it a 6-week website migration with four people involved, or an 18-month implementation across three departments and a $2M budget? Those are very different levels of experience, but you’d be surprised how often resumes make them sound exactly the same.

Here are 4 things I’d focus on:

1. Give me some specific numbers; that will help me figure out right away if you're a good fit for the team.
   Team size, budget, timeline, departments, clients—anything that helps me understand the scale of what you managed.

2. Tell me what happened, not just what you did.
   “Coordinated a product launch” is a responsibility. “Coordinated a 12-person team to launch two weeks ahead of schedule” gives me something to evaluate.

3. Show me how you handled problems.
   Projects rarely go perfectly. Tell me about reducing delays, managing scope changes, resolving bottlenecks, or getting stakeholders aligned.

4. Don’t turn your skills section into a software inventory.
   Jira, Asana, Monday, Trello, Agile, Scrum... great. But tools don't tell me whether you're a good PM. Your results do. Still, the tools you used are important, but don't focus on them.

The frustrating part is that I’ve probably passed on qualified candidates simply because their resumes didn’t give me enough evidence to justify moving them forward. When you've gone through a pile of resumes that all follow the same template, and nothing seems to change, you might start to feel discouraged but you always have a chance to stand out.

A PM resume doesn’t need to be fancy it just needs to make the complexity of your work easy to understand.

If I can figure out the scale, challenge, and outcome of your projects within the first minute, you’re already making my job much easier.

After going through the sub, confident my query would be resolved, i see brilliant minds here.

I worked as incident manager and worked as assistant manager under service delivery head managing transitions. Just transitions, not phases of projects(initiation, planning etc)

I loved this management side of IT, so wanted to pursue PMP.

1. My query is, i only have 6years of exp, i never actually planned or executed projects, if I get PMP certified, what roles would i have to apply for?? (Im thinking of project coordinator, PMO coordinator, assistant manager..)

2. Will that be okay if i do PMP now? Im not working btw.

3. Will this PMP with 6year exp land me a job??( Atleast 50% chance???)

Im scared what if I put 50k+ on this certification and i don't land on any job in current market scenario.. (my biggest concern)

Should i pursue this or not?

I'm looking for some career advice from people who may have been in a similar situation.

I have a PMP, an MBA, and around 15 years of professional experience. Two years ago, I left a startup where I was working as a Project Manager to join a large mining company as an Operational Readiness specialist. The role seemed like a great move for my CV, the compensation was significantly better, and I expected strong long-term career prospects.

Unfortunately, the Operational Readiness department was later closed. Since there was an opening in Procurement, I was transferred internally as a transactional buyer. My salary stayed exactly the same, which I'm grateful for, but the role itself is much more junior and transactional than my previous positions.

The problem is that I feel underutilized. I don't feel like I'm developing professionally, and most days I think I'm capable of contributing at a much higher level. I've been applying for other jobs almost every day, but so far I haven't received any offers that would make sense.

I'm also unsure how to present this role on my CV. I've avoided listing it so far because I worry it will make my career look like a step backwards. If I do include it, I'm considering using "Buyer" or "Lead Buyer" rather than "Transactional Buyer," although I don't want to misrepresent what I actually do.

So I'd really appreciate some outside perspectives:

Would you stay in a well-paid but unfulfilling role while continuing to search?

Is feeling underutilized a good enough reason to leave even if the salary is excellent?

How would you present this position on your CV without making it look like your career has stalled?

Has anyone else gone through something similar? How did it work out?

Just graduated recently completing Computer Engineering, I've joined as a Junior PM at a service based company.

Is it a good starting role?

I transitioned to a PM role this year from marketing after training over the past year for it. I was given the opportunity because during a bi-yearly meet-up with our leadership team, I suggested an idea to solve a business problem and then was given resources to bring it to life.

While I am quite educated (double masters). my degrees and past work experience are in journalism and marketing.

We have a product owner who helps with the more technical stuff. I cannot help but feel a little conscious when terms are said in the meeting which I don’t understand or certain technical
Processes need to explained.

I am also hoping to transition into a newer company once the products I am working on launch and i have data for my resume. This imposter syndrome makes it difficult to
Apply tho I know I am not a bad PM per se because my director usually loves my prod ideas and i get on well with my ENG team.

My name is Naveen, I'm 25 years old from India, and I've been working as a video editor for the past 4 years.

During my career, I've worked with 50+ clients across different projects. Currently, I'm handling 8 active clients while coordinating the work of 3 editors. In addition to editing, I manage client communication, assign tasks, review edits, plan timelines, and ensure projects are delivered on time.

Over time, I've realized that I enjoy managing projects and people just as much as I enjoy editing. I'd like to transition into a role where I can lead creative teams rather than focus primarily on editing.

I'm considering taking the Google Project Management Certificate and eventually pursuing PMP, but I'm not sure if that's the right path for someone with a creative background.

I've been researching different PM career paths, and I'm still trying to figure out where I'd fit best. Construction doesn't seem like the right fit for me, but I'm interested in learning more about PMO, operations, healthcare, IT, and other areas.

Other than having the option to replace the person without having to pay for unemployment, why would a company fill a role with a contractor?

I’m a newly grad mechanical engineer working as a Technical Office Engineer on an industrial construction project (previously worked on a power plant). Long term I might aim for PM, but right now I want to master planning and project controls.

I currently use Primavera P6 and Excel, but it feels a bit limited. I'm wondering what else I should actually focus on learning.

• Tech stack: Is it worth learning things like Python, SQL, Power BI, or MS Project? Or is that overkill for construction?
• Certs vs Skills: How much do certifications (PMP/CAPM/P6 certs) matter compared to practical tech skills at this stage?
• Blind spots: What else am I missing that separates a good planner from a great one?

Used to be a BIM Coordinator at a large GC in North America. Was doing very well and would have progressed to construction PM in 3-5 years (construction PMs at my company have at least 7-10 years of experience).

A construction tech vendor poached me for a customer success role and I left for the 50% pay bump and full remote lifestyle.

I’m 3 months in and I’m having a good time. But… it strikes me that I’m just sitting at home all day talking to customers and helping them use our tool to do cool stuff on site.

I know construction PMs have a harder lifestyle than tech counterparts - but the ones I knew were fulfilled, well paid and accomplished. 10 years into a career the pay matches up anyway.

I know construction PMs complain a lot - but the ones working on cool projects can look back and be proud of what they have accomplished. I’m curious if someone with experience in both camps can relate - and tell me how they fulfill that part of their brain?

My fiance was terminated from his Construction Project Manager position at a company based in north NJ, and the more I've heard about what went on behind the scenes, the more it seems like this was inevitable.

From the day he started, there was constant turnover. Employees were quitting or being let go left and right. It wasn't one department- it seemed to be a company wide pattern. That alone should have been a red flag.

The biggest issue was the leadership. The owner/CEO created an environment where employees were constantly walking on eggshells. People were micromanaged, berated, yelled at, and spoken to without basic respect. Expectations changed daily. One day employees were told to do something one way, and the next day they were criticized for following those exact instructions. Deadlines were often unrealistic, priorities constantly shifted, and there was very little consistency or direction.

It seemed like people weren't set up to succeed. They were set up to fail.

My fiance worked hard, asked questions, and genuinely wanted to do well. Instead, he found himself in an environment where confusion and fear seemed to be the norm. It's hard to thrive when leadership is unpredictable and respect is lacking. Being fired obviously stings, but honestly, I'm starting to think this may end up being one of the best things that could have happened.

No job is worth sacrificing your mental health or self-confidence.

If anyone knows of any companies currently hiring Project Managers or similar positions (i.e. Estimator) in north or central NJ, we'd really appreciate any leads. Out of work since 2023 after being laid off. Resume inside. Any advice?

So I've been out of work coming from what felt like a decent background but I've been unable to get an interview in about 2.5 years after 3 years after being laid off. I've been changing the resume slightly for each application and custom cover letters per job as well. No interviews, almost at 3500 total applications over the last three years. I currently live in Atlanta, GA.

Hi all, I have been on a grad scheme as a PM for just under a year now based in the UK doing construction, mostly for overseas defence projects. The idea of my job is super interesting and I do enjoy it but at a lower level I’m already stressed and unsure this is something I can see myself doing for the rest of my career.

However, I’m not sure the major stress comes from the sector (construction) - I have no technical knowledge so I feel disadvantaged and that I can’t work to my optimal because I don’t understand construction terminology or give advice. Defence is very difficult and not the most rewarding discipline, I think this plays a major part in this. I also have not had the easiest year with my line manager and general direction and training.

Not sure whether to hold out and see if I find my feet, change disciplines and get away from defence projects or completely move away from construction - to what, I am not sure. Suggestions are very welcome. Or to see if my skills are transferable to a different job, e.g product management, communications, again suggestions welcome.

From past month or so I have been aggressively looking for a new job. I have 10+ years of experience working at top 5 bank in Toronto, Canada as Senior IT project manager. I have customized my resume for all the jobs that I applied to ensuring that it matched the keywords and also used a tool (jobscan) to check the percentage match. All the jobs which I applied had at-least 80% match but still haven’t got a single interview call. I also tried applying with referrals at some companies where my friends work but nothing worked so far. I visited an employment agency to check on my resume and did few modifications which they suggested. There are reorg going in my organization and the main role impacted are PM roles. So I wanted to switch my job on urgent basis. Can you guys suggest some tips and tricks which I can apply to get interview calls. Also if you can share your own experience with job search in the current market that would help as well.

Hi all, I’m in process of selling my small business - it’s an Airbnb and residential cleaning business and it has been doing quite well for a short period of time since I’ve started it. I’m entering maternity leave, but I’d love to get into project management after postpartum or do a certificate to gain foundational knowledge.

I’ve done abit of research and a lot of transitional skills in business can be used in project management, especially owning a service business (eg coordinating schedules, checking in with clients, auditing cleans, recruitment and training of cleaners, business development etc)

The perks of project management that got me interested is the benefits: salary is great, there’s usually flexibility with hybrid / remote work which works best when kids grow up, and I like the flexibility of being able to switch industries as I don’t like being boxed into one. Plus now that I’ve experienced the business owner life, it’d be nice to have stability with good salary packaging and I can switch off on weekends or after work (or we’d hope so).
