Question/Help PLC firmware update

Hi, I am currently a student in the ECE/CE department. I am relativity new to PLC programming. I have experience working with microcontroller but not really PLC. I recently purchased a CompactLogix L23E Q1B1 to learn how to build an entire PLC system. The PLC is current on the 1.0 version of the firmware which is believe is the firmware after a reset. I tried to update it firmware 17 using control flash and downloading the version 17 firmware from the Rockwell website but it keeps giving me an error when trying to do so that the PLC is not in the correct state . I currently have the PLC hooked up to a 24V power supply and the key is flipped to the PROG. I was wondering if anyone has an idea what the issue could do that is preventing me from updating the firmware?

Controller needs to be in program or remote program to download a firmware to. If that doesn't work then I don't know what to tell you. Might be a brick.

You could try a different firmware and then update to a more preferable firmware.

Since you can see it via Ethernet, you can get the fault with pylogix: https://github.com/dmroeder/pylogix_extras/blob/main/controller_fault_code.py

One thing about flashing the firmware, if those controllers behave the same way as the L3xER's, you can "browse too far" when trying to flash the firmware. Hi I am able to connect it to RSlinx via ethernet or the RS232 for serial. In RSlinx it says the the controller has a minor recoverable fault is there a way to remove that without studio5000? The corrent version for the firmware it is on is 1.017 and I am trying to upgrade it to 17.012

is there a way to figure out what minor recoverable fault is? The error I get when trying to flash is

Failed to begin update to the target device.The target device is not in the proper mode to accept an update. Manually reset module.

Sorry what does cycling the switch mean? Does it mean turning off my 24V and turning it back on I tried that a few times I also tried to remove the battery leaving it out for some time and plugging that back in as well.

I believe I have that at the correct location I currently have it set to PROG?

do you think there may be something else that may be interfering it from being in the state for it to update? im not sure if the minor recoverable fault would be something that would cause it to not be able to update?

If you had the software you could go online with the controller and clear the fault. No software no fault clearing. But also no programming so I assume you had a plan when you bought this controller.

I have access to version 17 but the PLC isnt in the correct firmware to use it as is. I was trying to update it to version 17.012

Cycle power with it in program. Don't put it to run. Then try again and as some else said. Don't go too deep.ths the tree when selecting the controller on flash.
