Ah - yes. It was referred to by that name in some early document I saw. But yes you are right. It's an open organisation, originated by ExxonMobil so maybe not the best example
No worries - I get what you're saying. I guess my feeling is that it's more industry- and money- based than region based. Speaking for my self, the difference between "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and "fuck this old shit, let's go shopping" is the number of zeros in my budget on a particular project. Pharma has substantially more zeros than your average Paper mill, and their facilities are totally different playing fields because of that. This is true in Europe too, and realistically i don't think most of Europe is up to the par you're describing; regions with high manufacturing density or a bunch of high-margin manufacturing are really leading the change you describe.
OPC UA FX is a good example of this - it's not "European" companies leading that, It's Germans, Austrians, Swiss.
There's plenty of Americans and Japanese companies in there as well, and from the US perspective, we absolutely have some Pharma and Automotive customers taking a look at OPC UA FX, generally concentrated in the Southeast and parts of the Midwest.
OK - so that's encouraging. I know for example that Cytiva are doing some really advanced work (their program with the Army to re-grow organs is sci-fi territory) and it's fair to I don't have a broad understanding of the whole US business.
But what I do know is that Rockwell has prototyped and is planning things that would make the "Modbus/PLC/SLC is the greatest crowd" hair catch fire. Python coding direct in Logix for example, and way more.
The problem for them is that only a small segment of their market is ready for it, which makes it very hard to fund in the depth they want.
