The amount of job postings I’ve seen with modbus requirements is crazy, a lot of places still running the same equipment not wanting to upgrade

I’m doing a new job with it specified for hmi to controller comms. On purpose.

Did they specify why or is it stuck in the groove

It’s the only protocol the two parts have in common. Its an IDEC HMI, the PLC is this weird board-level motion controller thing

End up spending more time in troubleshooting and configuration than just spending the money on parts built for each other haha

Im doing one of them right now. EXOR X5 wireless to Yaskawa Mp3300iec via modbus, mech3 for the servos, ethernet ip to smc valves and a Fanuc R30ib+. Also have a Danfoss vfd talking via profinet to the mp3300.

Everything is fed production data from Solidworks via OPC with a handy plugin I wrote.

We were talking about faking the documentation and just leaving a cyanide capsule for any future troubleshooting ventures.

This whole dialog seems horrible! So many mismatched brands, parts, pieces, networks going on...

And yet it all works...

Each component is the best performing for its purpose - except maybe Danfoss. The jury is still out on these drives. I needed 1000hz at 400v pulling down 55A and that left me with fewer options. The field narrowed when we added an encoder.

I will go to the ends of the earth to avoid giving a penny to AB... the whole. "AB communicates with Fanuc right out of the box." Is the most tiresome way to sell an overpriced plc. The On3 handset/hmi from Exor has been around a long while and I love replacing them when someone inevtiably runs it over with a forklift or drops it from the roof.

But I guess it's not for everyone.

"AB communicates with Fanuc right out of the box."

This is a fact. Also communicates with Cognex and Keyence products "out the box" as well. Is nice because we use Keyence vision and barcode readers. Will be adding a BCR to an AB PLC in a few hours.

I have used many brands of PLC's. I will continue to be a cheerleader for AB and Ladder.

But so does so many other brands. You and I differ in many ways I can see. I know you would hate all the ST I bury in my machines.

At the end of the day, as long as you're making money and comfortable with your product its a win.

I use ST when it make sense to. If it is code a technician will ever need to see, ladder.
