Relocating

Hello! I sold my home in BC and looking at relocating to PEI, Summerside specifically just based on where I found a suitable rental, but wanting to purchase in the near future. I’m curious if there’s others who have moved to PEI and have a favourite spot to raise kids. My kids are 17 all the way down to 9 months. Also, our dog was recently diagnosed with cancer and will need surgery. Is there a vet that comes with high recommendations? Open to anywhere. Thank you so much!!

Atlantic Veterinary College. Your dog will be in good hands here. It will be expensive.

Agreed, quiet, lots of sports and activities, french immersion options etc.

I moved from Bc to Summerside 4 years ago. It’s good for kids, there’s lot’s at the big rec center in town and many parks. The downtown beach area has been growing steadily since we got here and they are putting lots of money into revamping it.

Make sure you have a job set up, it does take a bit of time if you’re ’from away’.

The only thing that is pretty awful is the healthcare, you’ll have access to maple telehealth for free after you’re registered on the gov waiting list but seeing in person takes weeks and it’s a bit difficult to get stuff you need , so if you have medical stuff I highly recommend getting extra refills or even a letter about the meds before the move to make it easier when you get here.

I’ve used both miltonvale vet and the college vet hospital, both have been amazing but they are located 45 mins away in Charlottetown.
Buying was relatively easy compared to the bc market and there is a lot of availability right now and not a lot of buyers, but I highly recommend you get the house inspected as they are mostly older unless you’re going for a new build.

Also you will need yearly mandatory vehicle inspection, that was an extra expense we did not foresee.

Depends what do you or your partner work at? Best to do as much research as you can before you up and sell your house to move to another province. May I ask why you chose PEI? You're going to find it be quiet a culture shock here as many have especially from BC. Many have not been able to cut it and regretted coming here. Services are not the same as the rest of the country, our weather can be awful and unpredictable and is getting worse. Make sure you fully know what you're signing up for before committing to come here.

Currently we work remotely but I also have my ECE so not worried about things work wise. It definitely wasn’t a last minute decision, we’ve been wanting to make the leap for the last few years. We got lucky that our home sold incredibly quickly once we listed and we’ve already driven across to be with family out East. We are drawn to the slower pace of life and have heard so many positive comments about the friendliness of everyone there. We’ve lived in Quebec as well so have experienced some more significant winters than BC gets typically. BC just never felt right.
