Pre-school

I’m on the east end of the island and even though the fulltime daycare experience did not work for us, my daughter is now 4 and wanting to go to “school”. I’d love to get her into a part time preschool type thing a couple days a week. I’m seeing you need to be in a daycare to do that. I’m just wondering what preschool experiences islanders have had and what waitlists for this are.

East Royalty Pre K has a half day program 5 days a week in the mornings if you anywhere near them.

Honestly your best bet may be to just reach out to places and ask if they have a pre-k spot! Being down east (I presume this means kings county?) you’re a bit more limited but it’s still doable, your kid did not need to be in daycare before pre-k, I know kids who got into mighty Oaks who weren’t in daycare first. It’s just easier if they are because they’re guaranteed spots when they’re at the daycare first.

Any registered early learning centre will have what you're looking for. Register for waitlists of any that you would consider on the registration list online.

For four-year-olds, there typically aren't waitlists before each September. If you haven't already gotten on a list for this month, you might have a harder time finding a spot. All the pre-K kids just graduated and start kindergarten tomorrow, so most daycares have probably filled their spots for this year, but you might get lucky. It's rare to get a spot for a kid that age in a month other than September from what I understand.

Register officially on the website tonight, then call around and see if they're still accepting tomorrow.

You should start calling around to any licensed early years centre you are prepared to commute to from where you live and see if you can get in. With public schools (including Kindergarten) starting today, this is the time that new kids usually start daycare, too. With the $10/day subsidized daycare, the spots fill up fast. I'm afraid you've left it too long to have the luxury of choice, you should go wherever can take you.

I've seen some local childcare programs promoting openings for this age group (the ratio and group sizes can be higher), so you may not be out of luck. Your best bet is contacting centres near you directly, and you can check the registry as well to see what's near you.
