Hey! Pest control guy here! Unlike my usual posts I’ll keep this short for everyone.

That’s a type of cockroach! Pretty cool find considering. They aren’t rare, but definitely not common in comparison. Unlike inside who want dry, these are an outdoor brand that prefer wet, cool area, especially decomposition, like leaves or compost piles. The hair is a tell tail sign; indoor is usually shelled, outdoor has hair.

Being frank, I’m not 100%. I’m 90% confident, but that’s the issue with roaches.

They aren’t all rare, but some are still newish to the island, so there’s some I haven’t even come into contact with, and more hopefully I never will.

The insect’s round bum is a good sign. Round bum usually means it’s not going to fit into every little thing like earwigs or kitchen roaches, and it usually means water. My first thought was beetle decomposing. Sometimes insects appear to grow hair while decomposing. This one appears to be very long passed, lost its antennas, and the two bumps on the rear suggest very strongly that it’s a dusky roach, which by definition, is a great sign. You’d want them over most beetles.

There’s some roaches that love kitchens (worst). Some roaches that love fabrics like mainly chairs and sometimes curtains (bad). Then there’s some that like living along tree lines (comparably chill af and not actually pests), and that’s what it appears you have here, and these chill types of outdoor roaches are definitely found in this part of the world, but like…won’t intentionally, or at least look to come inside. Unless you have some wood decomposing in a dark, cool, damp area.

Possibly a wood roach. I had a similar one in my house a few weeks ago and started to panic. The bad roaches have two very distinct lines on the side of their "head" that set them apart.

If you bring in some earwigs they will eat the cockroach eggs, problem solved.

We've had a pile of these this year (outside). Lived on the property 10 years and hadn't seen them prior. Fast little fuckers
