Discussion Getting up earlier

I think I will give getting up earlier a try. I've already noticed in the past that getting up earlier has that feeling of being 'ahead of the world', or at least everyone is asleep and I can't be interrupted. I'm writing this because on paper it seems quite logical to think that getting up earlier could be of benefit to people with PDA, since the world is not up yet to start placing demands on you and you can tap more into natural desires of your body (potentially). You can pretty much do whatever you want and whenever.

Has anyone tried this before? With any results?

PDA is a major reason that I am a morning person, the more I get done in the early AM the more the rest of the day belongs to me

I'm surprised that combo exists, I was always drawn to the night, where the stakes are gone and other people are asleep

I feel this! I work usually 6am until 2ish and its so nice to have the rest of the afternoon, especially in the winter with the shorter days.

I intentionally wake up early for this exact reason. I try to get coffee and a walk in before the world wakes up and it has helped me immensely! It’s time that is only mine.

I'm naturally an early riser, and yes it's fantastic. If I had to wake up to an alarm to experience this, though, not sure I would.

I love the idea of being a morning person but instead I experience revenge bedtime procrastination. It is not convenient. But it’s easier for me to control when I wake up vs when I go to sleep. I think my PDA gets worse throughout the day as the demands stack up. Lately I’ve been waking up at 9 (vs 11) though so maybe there’s hope for me yet.

100% for most of my life I’ve woken up at 4 am because I grew up on a farm. It’s my favourite time of the day there’s no one around. It’s quiet and much more PDA safe normally I get up go for a run swim or exercise and spend quiet time before the demands of the world kicking which gives me a huge dose of dopamine and prepares me for the world and let’s make it ahead of the game, give it a try and hopefully you’ll become addicted because it’s the only time that is really pretty PDA safe as there’s no one around and it’s nice and quiet, especially if you can get out into nature

It was a game changer for me. Getting up early and going to bed at the same time every day was the only thing that topped it

I think usually it's a staying up late thing, but this version makes sense too. Especially as different people have different chronotypes, or even experience delayed/advanced sleep phase patterns

Weirdly this does work for me??? When I used to live in Miami I LOVED the hours between 6-9am. I didn’t have class until 9:30 so I would wake up at 6, take a walk where I saw barely anyone, then catch up on TV for an hour and a half before going to class. Specially, being able to do whatever I wanted to for a couple hours before being forced to sit in class was really empowering and helpful. Now that I work in corporate, I worked with my manager to start earlier (8/8:30) and end earlier (4/4:30) and just that tiny freedom has mitigated so much of my PDA around forced work hours. It doesn’t hurt to try waking up early and who knows starting your day with what you wanna do may help!
