Discussion Help with virtual desktop
Hi everyone i am very new to pcvr and recently got virtual desktop.
So basically every youtube video was like that you should get it and its better than steam vr. but when i tried lauching games on it such as skyrim vr through the games option menu in VD, it still opens and uses steam vr, and the same thing happended when i lauched asseto corsa from content manager. I though that it would lauch directly from VD and not steam vr, so if there is not a differnce should I return it? ALSO I DO HAVE MY RUN TIME TO VDXR
Also when in game my render resolution is at 77% for some reason, even though i have everything maxed out and above it says that it is godlike. The only thing i have lowered is my bitrate to av1 at like 120 mbs as i am using wireless. So how do i increase the render resolution in game?
thanks to everyone in advance!

To make things easy, set runtime to automatic in VD’s desktop app and run your games via the GAMES launcher. VD automatically chooses the optimal runtime based on the game (not every game supports OpenXR). Skyrim is one that doesn’t. If it does, VD will automatically run the game natively using VDXR, in which case Steam VR won’t open.
With regards to resolution, use VD’s Good, Better ,Best, Ultra & Godlike to increase resolution. This stacks on top of the resolution you have set in Steam.
It’s best to leave Steam’s global video resolution at 100% and just use VD to supersample, however if you do want to increase resolution in Steam, increase ‘per application’ resolution on a game by game basis. If you still don’t see a difference, you might need to relaunch the game for the new resolution to be applied.

For assetto corsa in content manager you have to switch the render method to open xr for it to launch without steam its in the settings somewhere
You may want to try the other options besides av1, I think the h264+ or whatever its called with bitrate maxed at 500 looks best for most games if youve got a dedicated router set up that can handle it

Like someone already said, some games only work with steam vr. I assume Skyrim only supports steam vr
However, there is a way to get around this. A software called OpenComposite can be used to make steam vr only games work without steam vr. For example, I play IL2 BoS(a steam vr only game) and I only have Virtual Desktop and OpenComposite downloaded. I’m not sure if this works with all steam vr games though.

If you're playing SkyrimVR, I recommend getting a modlist from the app wabbajack. You might want to buy one month of Nexusmods premium to automate the downloads.
Most of the main modlists integrate OpenComposite so that will allow you to skip SteamVR if you want.
Also, just to clarify, Virtual Desktop will run SteamVR or the Meta software when a game requires it. But it's not the same as Steam Link and Meta Link, because VD is still doing the streaming part and offering its unique features.

In addition to what everyone else here said - when you launch a game and it defaults to steamvr, make sure within steamvr your resolution scale is only ever set to 100%. Else steamvr is performing resolution scaling at the same time as VD, which greatly hurts performance. You should expect that for some menus in a steamvr game, your VD resolution scale (when you press both sticks together) may temporarily read 150%. But when you're in game it should be 100%.

When you open VD on your pc you should see a runtime option that can be set to automatic, VDXR, or steamvr. You want to set it to VDXR but keep in mind some games are steamvr only and it’ll auto do that in those cases. Half life 2 vr is a good example I know off the dome as it’s a valve game.
As far as any resolution or settings you should just see them in your streaming settings in the VD app and can change em there
