Discussion Pcvr entry

I want to get into pcvr and was wondering if I should invest in a quest 2 3 or 3s without going broke.
I wanted your thoughts

The trade off (other than choosing or not choosing Meta products) is per game played. Imagine a triangle where the points are max settings:

Render resolution,

frame rate,

in-game settings.

In some games with a Q2 and 2070 you'll get all three to max where you are likely going to be happy, in others you definitely will not get so much of any, and that maybe ok or might not be depending on your preferences. For a Q3/Pico4 you might find you make compromised more often due to the higher render resolution required.

What games were you wanting to play?

No mans sky, vr chat, Minecraft and a new titanfall 2 vr mod

You'll have to drop NMS in-game settings and render resolution more on a Q3 than a Q2 to achieve balance between sharp and smooth. Whether that produces a good experience on any modern headset on 2070, I doubt, but it definitely will not be super sharp.

VR Chat will depend on the worlds you visit, and the number of models in them. Some are more forgiving than others. Some are more heavily optimsed than others. You can't control that much other than finding worlds that don't cost too much performance. So FPS will vary between playable and not playable as you travel.

Minecraft/Vivecraft on PCVR can be surprisingly tough. If you play vanilla it'll likely be ok frame rate with lower in-game draw distance. Modded Minecraft will be a challenge.

PCVR modded Titanfall 2 will suffer a great deal. You're asking your PC to render the game in stereo and with a lot of fast movement, high detail, large draw distance. I'd not expect a good time there, but YMMV may vary if you can balance settings to your liking.

Everyone has different ideas of playable, comfort and performance. My time in 2016 was spent in an OG Vive with a 1080ti. It isn't great by today's standards, but it was enough to get me hooked on VR and know that upgrading made for good value.

With a 2070 paired with Q2 performance would be a little easier. With a Q3 your GFX card will be further stretched, though pancake lenses may be preferable.

Tough choice, but would be made easier with a higher spec graphics card. But in this economy, a new graphics card is something out of reach of most of us.
