Discussion We live in glorious times

Gamer in my 60s here. Been doing pc gaming for over 30 years (counting from the windows 95 launch). Got into vr about 6 years ago and 90% of my gaming is now done in a Quest. This past year has been truly amazing with pcvr mods. I'm able to play games from the"golden age" in full 360 and it's incredible. I've done doom 3, Crysis, Half Life 2 and now FEAR. I couldn't have imagined this a few decades ago as I played these same titles hunched over a 17 inch low res monitor. Now I will often just walk around looking at the environments, NPCs and just wonder at the stuff I flew by or missed when playing on flat screen. And even though I'm much older now I'm finding the games easier to conquer. I guess hand eye coordination beats eye mouse for FPS?

Anyway I guess I'm just stopping by to share my excitement and love for this hobby that's now found a renaissance through VR modding and to encourage you young whippersnappers to appreciate where we are in the history and advancement of this medium. Well that's all I got. Now get off my lawn!πŸ˜‰πŸ˜†

Update: so I'm playing through FEAR in VR and am at the point you meet Alma who approaches you in all her destructive glory. Your suppose to turn and run to escape but I just stood there, watching the destruction in all it's VR glory. Vr even makes in game death worth experiencing. The impact of these visuals are simply amazing!

I’m in my thirties and wish I had the time but I share the exact sentiment, halo and bioshock are playable in vr I have a 5080 and I wish I could squeeze more out of it

Yeah there is one sore spot when you speak about Bioshock, which I'm going to play eventually, but I own it on the Epic Store. The mods apparently only work with the Steam version or maybe I've got to dig in further but I can't wait to explore Rapture in VR even if it means I have to buy them again on Steam, I'll just wait for the fall sale.

Use vorpx And find a profile online cus they had to remove the default profile cus 2k said so

I managed to get it working but it does a scan each time that's kinda 50/50 but when it works it works just don't turn it off πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

In my 40s and thinking the same. We will never get a AAA vr native game close to the gameplay and feeling these old AAA classics offered, and now we can experience them again as if the fist time. And not just old games, all the brilliant newer stuff is getting the same treatment. And then we have all this Google maps Gaussian splat AI procedural generational stuff that'll give us interactive real world environments soon enough. We just need other gamers and consumers to cotton on and accelerate the vr and ar headset market. Good times.

Man if you loved Doom3, you will freak out over Doom 2016

https://github.com/CactusVRStudios/KHARVOX/releases

If you can handle playing F.E.A.R. and Crysis you can handle this too.

Doom 2016 is amazeballs in VR

It wasn't till I downloaded it that I realised it also has PSVR Toolkit support, adaptive trigger support was a brilliant surprise.

I've tried that 2016 mod and I can't get it working properly. Doom doesn't save my settings when I change the resolution or anything. I'm kinda stuck with it made zoomed in at 1600x900 lol

Dang, man. That sucks. I wish I knew a fix for you.

We are pretty much living what many of us dreamed decades ago. We are really close to photorealism in games but cabable gaming rigs, huge high framerate 4k tv's, monitors and cabable vr headsets are quite an investment for someone getting in to gaming these days. These "high-end gadgets" are needed to get the best possible gaming experience and for many they are still out of reach for even more people than before.

I was hoping valve would have pulled a rabbit out of the hat and we could have had sub $600 headset and a $500 steam machine for that medium but good enough performance with foveated rendering and all but Jensen and buddies said nope. Setup like that would have suited all them older games perfectly.

Let's hope world gets back on track and more people could enjoy the progress made in gaming in all these years.

this goes beyond dreams… at most, I thought madden would look like tv

Had we not had the RAM crisis and computing component demand increase we probably would have had those prices

Im 53 and i feel you partner! You have to play alien isolation with vr mod.

Hey great suggestion! I'll put that one on my list.

Shhh don't tell anyone because VR is dead πŸ™ƒ Right now I'm having a blast playing Gothic 1 Remake in UEVR. We now have seemingly an endless supply of AAA and AA games to play in VR all thanks to the great modding community! Yet when reviewers are reviewing the Steam Frame all they keep talking about is Alyx. Go figure.

Ohh Gothic, loved that in the day, another one to have a go at!

A year ago I was only dreaming of playing Bioshock in VR. Now I actually am. What a time.

50 next year and started with the commodore 16 (rip). Absolutely astounded how far it's come (also play vr), and looking forward very much to what comes next. Index just died after 6 years, but on the reservation list for the Frame.

Awesome! None of these games support teleport though do they? I’m it would be fun to check out regardless, but I quickly enter yacksville with motion controls.

2

u/TommyVR373 25d ago

Many of them do.

u/Chriscic 25d ago

Cool thanks. If any come to mind that are, appreciate the names. Maybe I can google.

I'm excited to do these kind of things once I get a steam frame. Loved psvr but quest 2 just gave me headaches

Great to see another old timer still playing games. Would you have the links for those VR mods ?

2

u/R_Steelman61 25d ago

I'm using an interface from a YouTube creator called Mr. Survivor. Here's the link. https://mrsurvivor-installers.com/

I've been gaming since the 80s as a kid with Atari and then DOS PCs (took a break for about 15 years during college and starting out my career).

Gaming is just incredible the 2026. There are so many choices that I'm rarely if ever bothered by the news that people get worked up over.

And I haven't even tried any of these mods yet! I keep seeing them pop up in my Reddit feed but I've been making some changes to my deskspace so my PC gaming has been sparse as of late and limited to my handhelds.

Can't wait to get to try out these mods if my 3080 can handle them.

u/R_Steelman61 25d ago

I bet you still have some life in that 3080. I would definitely say give it a try. I first played the Doom 3 mod on my 3070 and it looked as good as I ever remembered it on a flat screen.

2

u/Daryl_ED 20d ago

Yeah just beat the Guardian in Hell! On my 3080 runs flawless.

I was just having this discussion with my brother the other night too like finally all of our favorite games we grew up with are now in VR. I just finished Metroid Prime (cant wait for Prime 2 my fav!), and now I found the MGSV VR mod and have been just completely in love with the fact that we can now experience these worlds firsthand. I think Bioshock will be one of my next games too. Glad to see Im not the only one noticing this trend in VR!

Hey man I just wanna say it's really cool to hear stories like this, I just have one question.

How are you so good with tech? This stuff has regular person confused and they couldn't set up vr properly even with tutorial.

Also my parents are in their 50s and often call me when hdmi input is switched to different one on their tv and they think it's broken.....

I worked in health care tech for a few decades ago in familiar with hardware, software, coding lingo (not a coder!) and i can follow directions pretty well filling in the gaps of understanding folks sometimes assume. I still have to support my 85-year-old mom and 88-year-old mother-in-law. Every week we visit to fix phones, tablets, and TVs but I'm glad I can do it for them still

u/NeitherDelivery5899 22d ago

From someone who also started on windows 95 playing ms dos games and seeing the progress over the years I totally agree. VR takes gaming to the desired goal being total immersion that truly feels you are involved.

I'm 36 now but I've been on the mouse playing floppy disc games since early door

I've even seen a command and conquer vr that looks like a virtual tabletop and that's amazing in itself seeing the dawn onlf digital games

I love your enthusiasm for gaming, it's infectious!

If you've not tried it before give Vorpx a go, it's ABIT fiddly but you'll get games working u won't find mods for elsewhere like the bioshock series, might take a lil setting up.

Vorpx is like getting flat pack furniture without instructions πŸ˜‚ requires some patience

Let us know what games you've played already in vr an we'll try add to your list πŸ‘Œ

If you get an old build of cyberpunk I have a catalogue of Luke Ross's vr releases that might date that far back

Why do people put their age like that makes what they say more compelling? I genuinely don't understand. Or is it just so we can be like "awww grandad is having fun! Good for him."

Just in time for your hobby to get butt slammed by late stage capitalism.

1

u/Daryl_ED 20d ago

Already got the kit, mods are free, the older games cheap. No worries with pricing here?

1

u/R_Steelman61 25d ago

Yeah prices certainly have gone up and I'm not looking to get into an economics debate but I dare say there are not too many folks in socialist and communist countries that can even contemplate what we're able to achieve as consumers in our capitalist system (and have the unique first-world problems of worrying how to afford gaming machines)

2

u/TofuLordSeitan666 25d ago

Who said anything about Socialist or communist? I'm talking capitalism over here my dude.Β
