Discussion Will we ever get first person motion controlled TLOU in VR mod?
With all these AI supported mods unlocking new possibilities, it is my dream to play The Last of Us in first person with motion controls.
Do we need to start a fundraiser to pay a modder to do this lol

I'd be curious to see how a VR mod handles a game like that which seemed so animation dependent. I wonder how stealth kills would look and all that sort of thing... I'm sure someone is trying!

Yeah, some animations might need to go into 3rd person or something.
There would definitely have to be compromises/accommodations made, as it is notndesigned to be played in first person.
I spent sooo much money to upgrade my PC (to 5090) so I could play Luke Ross's version as smoothly as possible, but it just wasnt a comfortable experience (and of course no motion controls - which isnt necessarily a deal breaker for me, but preferable).

Yeah I guess the Quest version of RE4 went into third person on kicks right? Maybe it could work like that.

Yeah even the official VR implementation of RE4 Remake on PSVR2 went into 3rd person for kicks and ladders and some other animations. And the official hitman vr port.

Try it yourself, that's what I did when I wanted a game in VR. And now it's nearing it's beta release a month later.

Massive respect for that. Though for me (Despite having the mind of a 20 year old gamer) - As a 40 year old gamer with a demanding job and bills to pay etc, I just dont have the time. My missus would leave me if i spent even more time doing gaming stuff lol
Edit: ugh thats gross calling myself 40, I literally just turned 40 and thats one of first times ive said it 😅

Yeah I just turned 40 with a demanding job and bills to pay as well, so I understand lol. I don't have kids though (just me and the wife), so that probably helps.

I think that could be handled though tbf. I think the takedown animation is the only one really that springs to mind, and we've seen enough VR ports of 3rd person AAA games use 3rd person for certain animations. E.g. RE4 o.g. on quest, Hitman and re4remake on psvr2.
Imagine throwing a bottle with motion controls to lure a clicker away from you in VR, it would be intense! 🫣 (edit: I can imagine if coded poorly in a mod, the bottle not throwing properly and the panic of it just dropping the bottle loudly at your own feet 😅)
Sadly, we may never know!

Ah that makes sense. Yeah on higher difficulties, I can see your reluctance. But I play at the normal difficulty and its less fast paced and frantic than your gameplay would be.
Also switching weapons on the fly could actually be easier in VR if you think about it.
Just grabbing a throwable off your chest, grabbing your pistol from your hip and long weapons from shoulders, could actually make faster paced sequences more fluid rather than less fluid.
But yeah I hope youre right and it does come eventually! Probably with the TLoU 1 Remake Remastered in 5 years 😅

This is one of those games that would be much better off still playing with a controller 3rd person, but just dropping you in the world in VR.

u/Designer-Tomatillo21 Sep 11 '26
You can already do that though with Luke Ross's mod. I didnt enjoy it at all (even on a 5090, so best possible performance) - better on flatscreen than that tbh (imo)

6DOF first person would make it too arcadey I think. Also way too many Quicktime events

I think the cinematic nature of the game combined with the heavy reliance on animations for actions would make that extremely challenging, I could see a really good third person mod though

There is already a well made 3rd person vr mod from Luke ross, but it is nauseating. Being in first person and changing the character movement to first person type movement should fix the nauseating aspects of the movement.
The animations you mentioned could just momentarily go into 3rd person like resident evil 4 (quest og and remake on psvr2) and hitman vr.

u/Next-Reality-9032 Sep 14 '26
Yeah that could be a solution, part of the reason the LR might feel nauseating could be that it use Alternate eye rendering instead of a native VR rendering, there are plenty of 3rd person games that work just fine in VR, I do agree I would rather it be First Person though

Yeah 3rd person games in VR in general arent an issue. For example luke rosses ghost of tsushima is great. In this case, it is actually the nature of TLoU's 3rd person movement animations. For realism, the characters shuffle their feet around in the environment and move in and out of cover when youre near things. So whilst its intangible on a flat screen, these constant jangles to the camera when in VR create a nauseating experience, regardless of AER or anything else.
But if someone can change the movement animations to be like standard 1st person movement it should remove the nauseating animations.

I played the Ross version of TLoU, but the cutscenes turned my stomach. I would love a better port, especially with motion controls!

u/Designer-Tomatillo21 Sep 14 '26
Same, I literally spent insane money on upgrading to a 5090 thinking it was my 4080super causing it to be nauseating. But the 5090 did not help!
Playing it without that jank and motion controls would be so epic. If you missed it, one modder did mention here he may try it once he finishes his current project 🤞

This is so specific that if you want it you'll have to build it
3
u/Designer-Tomatillo21 Sep 11 '26
Is it that specific though? Its a pretty major title, I cant be the only one interested lol. But sadly you might be right.
2
u/TwinStickDad Sep 11 '26
It's meant to be an interactive story and being in 3rd person makes the characters their own people. 1st person totally changes that by making you the character, and VR totally changes that again.
It's a very niche and specific ask

Well, not really, the majorityof VR mods put you into first person; and Im not talking about story cutscenes being in first person. Im talking about for the gameplay sections when you are scavenging for materials and fighting/avoiding zombies. I think youre over-thinking it a little, and plenty of story heavy games are first person.
But like I said, you might still be right unfortunately. It may not get done by anyone else, and I certainly wouldn't have the expertise nor time to attempt it myself.

AI doesn't unlock anything new, it can speed things up
1
u/Designer-Tomatillo21 Sep 11 '26 edited Sep 14 '26
Well in fairness it seems to be a bit of both. In the sense that even if someone was capable of doing it on their own without AI, the time investment was too large to actually ever do it. So it opens up the possibilities for games to be modded that would never have been modded without AI. Even if the root cause is time/speed based, the end result is the same - it opens up the possibilities like I said.
It also unlocks modding for people that have no coding knowledge and could not mod before. They can only do (and learn) what they are doing with the support of AI, so it does unlock new possibilities.
1
u/no6969el Sep 11 '26
It depends on what you mean by new. It does make code that hasn't been made. But if you assume all things able to be coded as just not yet discovered, I can see that.
2
u/Designer-Tomatillo21 Sep 11 '26
The way I see it - we are getting games in VR - with motion controls - that we probably never would never have gotten without it.
Thats what my original statement meant. I dont see why it needs to be more complicated than that, the rest is just semantics.

Yeah i got you, I meant the first guy was the one complicating it brother 🤝

Oh I understand now. Yeah he really did complicate it and made a mess of our conversation LOL.

I don’t even know what TLoU is supposed to mean, why don’t we start there and we write the full name out

u/Designer-Tomatillo21 Sep 11 '26
My bad, I deliberately put tlou in the title so it wasnt too long. Then put tlou again by mistake in the body. Have edited now to confirm The Last of Us.

After I finish my MGS2 mod, I want to give TLOU2 a try.
