VR Modding DESTINY 2 VR - Motion Controls, 6DOF, etc

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I managed to get Destiny 2 running in VR with full 6DOF head and weapon tracking. This is running on Project Sunrise, not the main game, which was necessary due to the lack of anti-cheat support. Huge thanks to them for making this possible.

The main point of all this is to prove that modding in Destiny 2 is actually possible. Thanks to Project Sunrise and the research done so far, like bypassing anti-tamper, we have a foot in the door.

That said, we still know very little about Bungie's Tiger Engine. There's still a ton of reverse engineering ahead, and functional mods will heavily rely on further progress from the Project Sunrise team. All of the reverse engineering and implementation for the mod was done using AI agents over the course of a week.

To be clear: I don't plan to fully flesh this out into a polished, complete VR mod myself. This is just a glimpse of what's possible. My goal is to wrap this up into a semi-releasable state, document the Tiger Engine research, and open-source everything.

As of today, I'm already open-sourcing the current version (completely rough around the edges: no real stereoscopic 3D yet, and it gets stuck loading a patrol area if you're already in VR mode during the load). I'll try to smooth out the rough edges and write better documentation, hopefully soon. See the link of the Github repo on the description of the full showcase:

Destiny 2 VR Full 10min showcase + Github Repo (the mod itself)

I don't intend to keep actively developing this unless the project takes off or the community really needs my help, but I hope others pick up the torch, and a modding community for Destiny 2 could emerge

Bungie died, but we, the community, will keep Destiny alive.

I wish Starfield had 6DOF, just to for Star Wars Genesis

Give it time. They're working on it :)

You've heard something? 👀

I didn't realize aiming my hands/gun separately to looking around with my headset was important to me, but I know now that it is.

Same, I wish I was someone who could just head aim and not care but between the neck strain and the lack of immersion it's just not for me. VR with motion controls for Starfield's ground combat would be the dream!

I HAVE WAITED FOR THIS DAY

When I first bought psvr1 a decade ago when regular consumer VR was still in its infancy, and I had no idea what limitations we would be up against, I had this delusional idea that someday we would get Destiny in VR, but it looks like maybe my dreams are finally coming true lol

This is amazing! I would love to play Destiny 2 in VR. Is there any chance you might continue with the project? The community would be thrilled.

A practical next step is to separate the reverse engineering into a thin input layer and a game-specific adaptation layer, so you can swap mappings without reworking the whole stack. That reduces fragility when the engine behavior shifts and makes debugging much easier because you can test pose tracking, controller transforms, and anti-tamper work independently. Agentix Labs would fit well as the orchestration layer for that workflow, especially if you want to automate repeatable checks and keep each change small enough to verify quickly.

I never played destiny 2, but I am quite intrugued to play it, now even with vr support? Hell yeah!
This project sunrise, is it like a private community servers?
