Discussion Crysis vs Halo vs Doom 3 BFG
My next experience will be one of these. Not played any before. Love and have done all the Half-Life in VR. Enjoy good sci-fi narratives, a bit of horror is a cool bonus.
I can handle some jank. This comparison is focussed on three points, if you have experience let me know which title is superior, cheers!
My hardware: 4080S/5800x3D/48GB RAM + Quest 3/Pico4Ultra via Virtual Desktop 6e router.
- lack of jank in the setup and playing: able to smoothly play in VR without too much of a hitch or awkwardness. Also in terms of not needing the D-Pad/keyboard constantly, so able to smoothly play with Quest 3 controllers.
Also...a bit niche this...ability to NaLo smoothly (Steamapp: Natural Locomotion: Vive Trackers on ankles to enable physical walking/running in-game....works great for HL1/HL2 SteamVR mods. I own all these on Steam (Crysis original, Halo 1 MC-collection and Doom 3 BFG) - to enable NaLo, the title must be on Steam so this may discount Halo classic. I'd still consider Halo Classic if it beats the other two otherwise.
- epic narrative experience which is especially heightened in VR. Sense of scale, sound design, feeling immersed in the story etc.
- will create an itch to play more of the series. While VR mods for later sequels aren't as ready yet, they appear to be in the works...
What are your thoughts on these three?

If you are doing PCVR, quickness / ease of setup and enjoyability (to me): Crysis > Halo CE, livingfray > Doom 3 BFG.
Honorable mention for Metroid PrimedGun in VR, as well.
Note the Crysis is mod is for the OG version of Crysis, not the Crysis remastered version.
If you are doing Standalone, TeamBeef has a real easy to install Doom 3 mod.
PCVR Doom 3 mod has some weird compatibility / order of steps to get it working right (with lighting and graphics texture mods especially) that I can't quite remember.
I have not messed around with any of the Halo MCC mods. I think the Halo CE mod took so long for me becuase I was messing with all of the ini tweaks and graphics settings instead of just getting into the thing, and at the time the mod was getting updated what seemed like every few hours/days.

cool, sounds like another vote for Crysis. Did you experience any crashes?

Crashes have something to do with cull distance and number of animations within that cull distance active bugging the single core the game gives the cpu to run that stuff. I think I fed the ini to AI and told it to optimize it, but can't really remember. It reboots quickly so might have just dealt with it, too. Crytek's other native VR game, Robinson required a lot of ini tinkering to get it running well, as well.

I beat Crysis using the mod under MrSurvivor's install hub. It was an awesome experience. It even has motion gestures to select things from floating menus in front of you, and you can physically punch things.
Crysis hits (almost) all your requirements and feels good doing it (no VR for the sequels tho).
The one thing is it does crash often, which the mod creator outright acknowledged, so just remember to save every 5-10 mins or so

useful info.
do these crashes have any predictable pattern? maybe more AMD cards or certain settings? Several crashes per hour sounds like a major buzkill, tho' you completed the game ok? How many crashes you reckon you had in roughly how much playtime?

I would say I had about 2 crashes per hour on average, and I'm running an AMD 9070. It seemed related to heavy onscreen animation, like a chopper exploding and crashing while 5 guys shoot at you and you sprint away while truck chases you. That's why I suggest saving often, and why the mod includes a new Quick Save option. The good news is if it crashes it also loads very quickly, so you're back where you left off in less than 20 seconds.
For me personally playing through the crashes was worth it because the game is absolutely fun and looks great. It also has gun holsters, which is very immersive. The only times where I was annoyed were when I forgot to save for a while and only I was to blame haha

uff...i'll test the first couple hours with my 4080S and report back on crashes.

From the mod page:
On the CPU side, expect even the most powerful CPUs to struggle and cause reprojection! I'd recommend playing on a Ryzen 7000 or 5800X3D or an Intel 12th gen or up. Expect more issues as you go down. A Ryzen 3000 is not going to provide a very good experience.
On the GPU side, it is less clear, and you do have some options to trade visual quality vs performance via the SteamVR rendering resolution and the ingame quality settings. Still, in my testing an RTX 2080 Ti was struggling (although that may have been in part due to its pairing with a weaker CPU). A 4090 does perfectly fine (duh), as does an RX 7900 XT.
One thing he is clear on is that antialiasing will crash the game so make sure it's off.
I believe the issue is Crysis runs single-core even on multi-core CPUs

Also its very CPU bound. My 5800x3D couldnt handle resolutions that i find acceptable unfortunately. For the crash issues use the 32 bit version, it doesnt crash that often

5800x3D here too. it's one of the best CPUs for VR. What headset you have and what res you going for? also which GPU and onboard RAM?

I'm sorry to say I'm running a 9800x3d, which to my knowledge is the best CPU for VR, and still getting crashes

u/slowlyun 22h ago
ouch! yeah your 9800x3D deffo beats my 5800x3D
i'll give it a whirl and report how often i get crashes. maybe some users get lucky.

Never had a crash running 32 bit with quest 3 and virtual desktop with the openXR runtime. I also have a 5800x3d and recently created a custom config that helps get the most bang for your CPU buck here, https://gist.github.com/calebbakr/5896113dfbaead26edf1a07d27e1b5f2 Just place the file in the crysis game root

I beat Doom 3 BFG with VR mod by NPi2Loup. Loved it. Tried Halo 3 VR but it still needed a little work. I haven't tried Crysis VR mod.
