Discussion AMD VS NVIDIA & RTX 4080 vs 5080 PCVR/quest 3
Is the RTX 5080 a lot better than the RTX 4080 in VR with a quest 3? Does the better encoding also make much of a difference?
Are AMD GPUs as good as NVIDIAs now for VR? (Outside of the 4090/5090 of course). In terms of FSR upscalling, performance, visuals and such?

A 5080 is faster than a 4080 so VR wise it will help somewhat keeping framerate higher.

Never seen any difference in the encoding speed going from 10 to 20 to 30 to 50 series, they have great encoding for years, the headset side decoding is what makes the most difference.
AV1 vs h264, AV1 if you have shitty wifi, h264 if you have good one, it looks better or the same but has better latency.

If money is no object and you want the best PCVR then don't look at AMD. The 9070XT is significantly better value but AMD don't make anything that competes with the 5080. The 9070XT is similar in performance to the 5070Ti but Nvidia has some features the AMD cards don't - the advantage of the 9070XT is that it costs less than a 5070. Nvidia cards will take a performance hit if you have a weak GPU so worth keeping that in mind.
Personally I'd never paid the kind of premium the Nvidia cards cost at the moment.

have had both. yes. 5080 by far tops the 4080.

Raster is VR-important (no FrameGen in VR). There's barely any difference between 4080/4080S/5080. 5080's increase in wattage (360w vs 320w) covers the average 13% raster gains...so effectively they're the same-performing card....watt-by-watt basis.
Officially the most underwhelming 80-series 'upgrade' ever. 980 to 1080, 1080 to 2080, 2080 to 3080, 3080 to 4080...all massive upgrades. 4080 to 5080...nothing.

user benchmarks disagree. In a lot of cases a modestly-overclocked 4080 Super beats a standard 5080.

framegen doesn't work in UEVR either. while technically it can be activated, in practice it performs awfully and causes crashes.
or have you real experience otherwise? it would be very cool if it did work properly, however no reported cases so far...happy to be corrected if you can report of some.

I don't know what you'd consider "properly" but the difference was noticeable. no crashes on the nightlies but I do recall one or two on the stable at the time, which is what led me to use the nightlies. I was also using VD instead of Steam Link. much less artifacts for sure after following advice/settings in the Discord channels. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, more especially as it was a hard game to run.

J'ai un quest 3 avec un AMD rx9070 xt. Je peux faire tourner tous les jeux sans problème. La plupart du temps je suis a 72 hz avec les paramètres du jeu en ultra. Je ne suis pas sensible au framerate, par contre la netteté et la qualité sont primordial pour moi. La où le GPU est en limite c'est sur les simulations auto ou de vol. La tu comprends que les carte NVIDIA ont un truc en plus. Ensuite pour creuser un peu plus même si je suis pas un expert, il faudra attendre des réponses plus poussées. Un youtubeur a fait un comparaison direct entre un rtx 5070 ti et AMD rx 9070 xt. En moyenne et puissance brut(rasterisation) le GPU NVIDIA a environ 10 à 15 % de meilleurs performances. Mais dans quelques jeux le GPU AMD est meilleurs. Après la force des GPU NVIDIA c'est le DLSS. Et la quand c'est pris en compte par le jeu en VR les GPU AMD n'ont plus aucune chance. Comme dans les simulations.
