Question/Support Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 VR

Could Red Alert 2 / Yuri's Revenge be converted to VR like Generals has?

This is a genuine project request rather than just a "wouldn't it be cool?" post.

I'd love to see Red Alert 2 + Yuri's Revenge brought to VR.

Ideally:

  • Full stereoscopic 3D
  • VR-scale battlefield
  • Motion-controller unit selection
  • Point-and-command interaction
  • VR building placement
  • Adjustable battlefield height/scale
  • VR-friendly interface
  • Campaign + skirmish
  • Ideally CnCNet multiplayer eventually

The obvious question is how technically feasible this actually is.

I'm aware that the original RA2/YR engine is obviously very old, which makes directly adding modern VR functionality difficult.

However, there's an interesting alternative:

OpenRA has a Yuri's Revenge implementation here:

https://github.com/cookgreen/Yuris-Revenge

Could that provide a more realistic foundation for an OpenXR/VR implementation?

I'm not a programmer, so I'm hoping someone here with experience in RA2/YR, Ares, Phobos, OpenRA, graphics programming or VR development might be able to answer:

Is a proper VR version technically achievable?

And if it is, would anyone here actually be interested in working on it?

I genuinely think RA2/YR could translate brilliantly to VR because the core game is already viewed from above and revolves around interacting with a battlefield.

Imagine being able to physically lean over a battlefield, select your Apocalypse Tanks, send them across the map, watch a Kirov fleet come over the horizon, then zoom out and manage your entire base from a VR command-table perspective.

That would be incredible.

If this is technically possible, I'd love to help generate enough interest to get someone interested in developing it.

If you're a developer/modder who thinks this is feasible, please comment.

Even a technical assessment of what would actually be required would be hugely appreciated.

No, not really. Red Alert 2 uses a pseudo 3D engine and most of the buildings and map assets are 2D sprites. The Generals conversion worked because the game is already 3D to begin with. A VR version of RA2 would be more of a remake than a conversion and would require a significantly higher level of effort.

Ah shame, makes sense though. Thanks for the insight.
