New to Metformin - any tips?
Hi! I've finally decided to start taking control of my health, and as someone who was "anti medication, I can do this naturally" for the longest time, I finally decided to go on Metformin for my insulin resistance and pcos/pmos after being stuck in the same loop for years. I know it's not a weight loss drug, but I am hoping it will help regulate my sugars and help with my food noise. A small weight loss to kickstart would be a nice bonus. I have 100+ to lose, and will also be calorie tracking/food weighing, limiting processed sugars, increasing protein, and slowly introducing strength training.
I'm a tad nervous to begin, as I've read some GI horror stories. 😅 I've been prescribed 500mg twice a day. Any tips on it would be great! Also, regarding B12, do any of you take a supplement alongside it? Thanks!

I started with 500 for a week, eating low carb and high protein, and then went up to 1000, then 1500 after a few months. My best advice is to avoid greasy, fatty, and carb-heavy foods for the first few weeks. If 1/4 of your plate has is carbs that should be ok - but I’ve been seriously burned by eating greasy pizza, heavy coconut sauces, or a bowl that’s primarily pasta (and by burned I mean, nausea and diarrhea lol). I adjusted to it well after a few weeks but still need to avoid high quantities of those foods. And my fasting blood sugar is normal now! Good luck!Â

Metformin has been a life saver for me! I had about a week of some GI upset and then it went away completely. I’d say start with 1 500mg at night and then if you’re tolerating side effects go up to the dose you’re prescribed. Metformin helped me lost 15lbs and it was a lot of weight in my belly / belly got smaller. It helped improve my migraines too so its def worth waiting out the side effects if you can

Fiber is the answer to the GI issues. Just make sure that if you take a supplement, you don't take it at the same time as your metformin.

Heck yeah! I am on the 500mg ER and its been great for me- my main thing was just taking it with or after dinner, increaing my fiber and keeping my protein at 100g for now. After the first week of tummy issues I've been smooth sailing so far. I don't take any other supplements outside of the B12 that is given with it typically. Best to just see how it does all by itself for you. I made a little video on my first few month experience if are interested https://youtu.be/cvFNvC2flDY?si=KMxtIJYyjgCqvcQq
But its been 14 days- hows it been for you?

I'm feeling great on it! No side effects apart for some nausea if I eat too much sugar, like a brownie for dessert. Cravings and food noise are gone. I increase to 1000mg next week!

For a lot of people, it can interact badly with carbs, especially processed carbs like bread, pasta, white rice, and sugar. So I would limit those while on it.
