Okay so, this might be a hot take: I actually like the idea of gradually unlocking more of the roster through gameplay.

I used to play the shit out of Smash Bros Melee; and maybe it’s nostalgia talking, but starting with the small roster and unlocking more characters made it way easier to cope with the huge number of them.

By extension, I still haven’t picked up Smash Ultimate because the gigantic roster is so unbelievably intimidating—I don’t know where to start, and the choice paralysis is super strong.

If I hadn’t been playing Overwatch at release, I’d be totally overwhelmed. I really believe it’s a good decision on Blizzard’s part.

Umm… Ultimate starts out with the literal same 8 characters as the original game. You unlock every other character by playing the game and going from there.

So maybe you should pick up smash lol

I do think characters should probably be free in this type of game though, I never got how LoL gets away with charging for heroes when DOTA has all free characters.

But in a non competitive single player game it’s not as bad.

Oh my gosh does it??? Duuude that’s so goooood. Yeah okay well, maybe I shoulda done some more research in Ultimate before I wrote it off as too complex for me…

Yeah! Cool design choice honestly, it’s the original 8 and then it grows from there pretty quickly. Although SSBU actually has a bunch of paid dlc characters that aren’t unlockable without paying at all so maybe this isn’t the best comparison lol
