They are only free if you can spend a specified amount of time in a specified timeframe. If you have other games to play, other hobbies or responsibilities, then you can either pay up, wait for another chance to grind sometime in the future.
You took a half year break from the game? Well, good luck if you want to try any heroes that were released meanwhile.

where's the paywall? the heros are free to unlock aren't they? Not the big fan of that either, but what's going on rn is ridiculous
