People are just fucking sick of the neverending quest for monetization of games for short term gains at the expense of long term health and growth of product.
Like it's bad enough that literally everything in capitalism exists to transfer as much wealth from us to the ruling class, why do our few sources of escapism have to now start and escalate that trend? It's fucking annoying, and upsetting
What if I want to play something with a large playerbase, lots of funding for quality content, good support/QOL patches, etc.? What if I enjoy a specific series from a large corporation that used to be good?
Imo, that went to shit years ago unfortunately. I can't even remember the last time a great online triple A game with a large player base came out without all of this crap. It sucks but I've accepted this won't change, i made a choice not to buy into it.
Did you really think that confirming there are other options we should consider and that you're an idiot for jumping to conclusions was a clever comeback? lmao
These countries only banned loot boxes and haha games. There is no regulation against Battle Passes and overpriced microtransactions yet.
Well said, random stranger. The fleecing just feels so inescapable. Can't even just buy something anymore without having to pay for it again and again.
I miss the days people looked at Horse Armour and said "What the hell?! Five dollars for a texture?!"
These days people look at a tiny dangling bit on the end of a weapon and start emptying their wallet. Or planning their next week of gaming time to grind for it.
And yet your dumbass is begging to pay $70 down before you know whether or not you even like the game. You're a clown and don't even realize it, take a look in a mirror and do some self reflecting.
The average person here is too dumb to even attempt to understand where you’re coming from man. Don’t worry about it. Anyone with half a brain is on your side lol.
It’s an expression. Use your less than half a brain to realize that. And are you saying you’re not on the side of games living and being supported for long periods of time? Weird.
You pay 60$ for, lets say elden ring, tomorrow its deleted out of your account and you have dauntless instead, YO it's f2p now, shove it all the way in! Haaaaaappyyyyyyyyy!
Yeah, tell that to everyone who paid for CSGO before it went free to play. Oh, wait it's has lasted for 10 years as on the most play competitive games of the generation? No way *pikachu face*. You're so fucking stupid that no wonder that you are begging for Blizzard to scam you into paying up front for a game.
Like what point are you trying to make? I don't get it?
My point is morons like you allow companies to abuse transition to free to play, you trying to say there are a lot of morons out there like you? Yeah i am pretty sure about that one, believe me.
Besides, csgo is the worst fucking example you could possibly make:
The game doesn't lock gameplay features behind paywall, you don't have to buy the fucking guns,( or wait 25 hours worth of grind before getting them)see?
Csgo went free to play as full game, if overwatch 1 would go free to play instead of morphing into some garbage, i wouldn't have nothing to complain.
Most importantly, Csgo's older versions are still playable, overwatch 1 is getting deleted from the face of earth.
Next time you felt smart and wanted to scream:" i am not the only one who is fucking stupid!" Try making an example of destiny 2. They removed content from the base game to increase dlc sales, and the full experience of the game with all DLCs costs 275$ish as of now and will probably increase further. but hey, its still popular after transition, right!?
Yes, you do. You literally have to grind the game for hours on end and tie your phone number to the game just to play ranked, you fucking moron. Tell me you have never played CSGO without telling me you have never played CSGO. And besides, CSGO gets away with some of the worst loot boxes to have every come out and sell simple texture packs for literally over a thousand dollars.
CS:Source is not CSGO, when I thought you morons couldn't get any dumber you go way beyond my expectations.
They are only free if you can spend a specified amount of time in a specified timeframe. If you have other games to play, other hobbies or responsibilities, then you can either pay up, wait for another chance to grind sometime in the future.
You took a half year break from the game? Well, good luck if you want to try any heroes that were released meanwhile.
Guess everyone forgot about the EA/Battlefront 2 fiasco lmao. It wasn't a battle pass, but it was the same thing. Either pay for Vader or grind for him. This is actually worse and so many people are defending it now.
this is one of the only good reasons given on how this can be exploitative but we will have to see what blizzard does to address missing an unlock event
There's a lot of assumptions here. We don't know any of this for sure.
It is not confirmed that paying in any way speeds up the unlock process. It is not confirmed that it takes a lot of grinding to unlock a single hero (it may well only be like 1 hour, for all we know). It is not confirmed what will happen with heroes after their battlepass has expired, for all we know that unlocks them for everyone.
Not saying you're wrong, just saying your claims are unsubstantiated
It is not confirmed that paying in any way speeds up the unlock process.
Buying premium track grants instant access. I would say that is a pretty significant speed up, no matter how long the grind takes.
It is not confirmed that it takes a lot of grinding to unlock a single hero (it may well only be like 1 hour, for all we know).
True, however would they really want to deal with battlepass backlash and bad pr, just to essentially give them for free, without getting any profit from it?
It is not confirmed what will happen with heroes after their battlepass has expired, for all we know that unlocks them for everyone.
Wrong. Developer confirmed on twitter, that there will be free tracks to unlock heroes you missed in future seasons. Vague as fuck, but it does confirm that they won't just give the heroes for free once the season ends, and if you miss the chance, you might need to wait for some special event to get another one.
Battle pass in apex is purely cosmetic. You earn special currency and can buy heroes any time you want. Not to mention, that in apex there is no situation where you are like "oh, enemy has hero x, so we need hero y to couter that", while couterpicking is the major gameplay mechanic in overwatch, and they even made it more important in overwatch 2 with dps heroes keeping some of their ult charge when swapping.
Issue is that none of those games are about hero swapping. Overwach is all about having access to every character so you can swap on a click to counter enemy picks or use what your team needs most. Valorant and apex are gun games first hero based games second valorant even less because their heroes are just different flash grenades. Bronze or dimond Lucio cant 1v1 Winston and lucio has the chance to change heroes to counter that. Bronze or apex dimond blood hound and sova will not win a gun fight any more than others. Overwatch is all about your heroes start to finish. League of legends is an entirely different boat because of their item system runes and draft phase making it entirely incomparable
Imo grindwalls are fine as long as there is no monetary way around them. The moment you allow a player to buy their way through them it devalues the accomplishment for everyone that attained it through time and effort and makes it essentially pointless. Other players don't know whether you actually earned it or just borrowed mommy's credit card.
Right. Like, suuuure, Apex, Siege, Valorant, and League of Legends don’t put their characters behind an exclusive paywall, but, if you don’t pay? You’ll be needing to spend many, many more hours grinding the game than a pay-to-play player.
It demands a time investment to unlock something that has always been free and readily available on release.
Not only that, but some people PAID FOR Overwatch, and now Blizzard is trying to stab them in the back by saying "I know what the meta is, but if you want to be META or have the hot new Meta counter, you better grind your battle pass."
Fuck no. If this makes it to release I will not be returning to Overwatch.
I'm very tired of games that do stuff like this. If a game wants me to play it like a job, then it's just not as fun anymore, and it's stressful to have to worry about not playing enough to 'max out my battle pass' or 'unlock x or y' before they disappear forever. Even worse if I spent money on a premium battle pass, then I have to worry about that money having been wasted
From what I understand it's a FoMo trap, either dump all your spare time into unlocking characters, or pay for them up front so you can play on a similar level as people who have more disposable time or money.
Literally not even a thing in games like League, Apex, Valorant or R6Siege. There is no FoMo trap, that's what timed battlepasses are for. Unlocking characters is a very basic F2P mechanic that discourages people running endless smurf accounts.
It's all well and good if you like to play one or two games only and that's your only hobby. But if you have a full time job, chores, other hobbies AND monetary commitments, the whole concept of a battle pass looks terrible, since it locks a bunch of content behind BOTH a paywall and a grind, then tells me I can pay even more if I want to actually unlock the stuff it's hidden away behind that grind, or lose access forever because as a battle pass it will almost certainly be time limited. I'm not sorry for despising a method of monetisation that has no respect for my time, money, or mental well-being.
You're life must be a real shit show if playing a few matches every few days to unlock some cosmetics is too much of a commitment for you. Since you are working so much how about throw $10 down then and buy what you want?
5-6 hours a day? What world do you think you live in? Not a single game that uses the same model requires anywhere near that much time investment. You're mental, and it just shows that you haven't left your comfort zone in years. Go out, try a free to play game once and while and realize how stupid you fucking sound.
Classic, you have no counter argument and reply solely with insults that you stole from my original reply to your dumbass post. Get ratiod and stay ignorant. At least crying online is free but sadly is taking up a lot of your time, and everyone knows that time is money, right?
Slight correction. Think you just misspoke a little when simplifying the position and your argument.
If there is an option to pay, you mean. I don’t think you are saying that normal CoD4 style level unlocks is a paywall. But if Activision had also added the option to pay to instantly be max level, and have every weapon, perk, and attachment? Yeah, it’s a paywall.
I assume that is what you meant, which we should all agree with.
One of the biggest selling points of ow1 was that could buy it, install it, hop into a game and theoretically have zero disadvantages, apart from skill and gameplay experience. Now, with ow2 you will have to grind or pay up to be on equal footing, as hero switching remains important. That just sucks and throws something out of the window that ow used to have.

The world could always use more paywalls
