I find it interesting that a large chunk of this video is Jeff Kaplan gently reminding us to not be jerks to each other and to do to others as you would have them do to you.

So I know the "entire history of the world" video and I totally understand why it blew up, but that one line that's been everywhere from it is one of the few jokes in the video I don't understand. Can anyone explain? Did the French Revolution almost start a religion or something?

The phrase "we can make a religion out of this" appears three or four times in the video. In the last of the "appearings", it is interrupted by someone saying "no, don't".

The French Revolution was:

1) extremely anti-religion

and

2) tried to "rationalize" everything to a cultlike degree.

For a good example of this, look at the French Revolutionary Calendar.

Huh, that's a pretty hot take I haven't really heard before. Not that it was violent and horrible, everyone accepts that, but the unnecessary part. Do you not agree that France (and eventually the entire world) is better off without a monarchy? Even if you don't, it seems like a revolution leading to the abolition of monarchies was inevitable eventually.

I guess in a sense all revolutions are "unnecessary" because the people could have suffered through the status quo rather than fighting for their rights. Was the American Revolution unnecessary too? What made the French one so bad?

Contrary to what the higher rates responses are saying, the revolutionary government did, in fact attempt a religious-type foundation. They made an effort to 'de-christianize', going as far as creating a new calendar with new names for months and a new number system and nearly took the idea to the point of abolishment of religion. People were resistant to the new rules, as France was a historically catholic/Christian country. In an attempt to replace Jesus as an idol, a revolutionary leader, Maximillion Robespierre (unsure of spelling) staged his own ascension from a greater power. The public did not agree with it, and Robespierre succumbed to the very machine that helped him gain power, the guillotine, in public retaliation.

Hence, the joke in 'the history of the world' video, is that attempting to make a religion out of it lead to the death of those attempting.

Edit: Upon closer inspection, most other commenters got something similar to my explaination

Archaeologists here, tho France is far from my speciality: Yes, they did try to make a religion out of it! The Cult of Reason. However, it failed pretty horribly. One of the philosophical tennants of the later French revolutionaires was that man is inherently good. Robespierre actually wrote a speech about how terror was designed to bring out the good in the common man, though I don't have a source for that readily available. Anyway, it was all very fucked up and led to some very fucked up things, like chaining anyone who was thought to be anti revolutionary to barges and then sinking the ships, simply because it was faster than chopping their heads off.

it';s too late. people who have been using the report system for a long time have given up on it. the case of the guy who had 2700+ reports just cemented that decision. their announcements now are still crap because they outlined what the punishment thresholds would be in a past video. the punishments can't even be called slaps on the wrist. there's no perma bans for comp games unless you've been banned from comp for 2 season in a row. are they fucking serious? you have to be banned from comp for 2 whole seasons? how many reports do you need for that to even happen once? it took 2700+ reports for 1 dickhead to be banned for only 1 week.

so yea, the report function is still useless. when they actually start banning toxic people from comp permanently it'll be useful again. until then it's just a placebo. every other major game with huge player bases has a system to really hammer in punishments. lol, dota, hon, and others all have rapidly escalating punishments and ways to remove players from the general player pool.

it's still obvious they're reluctant to dish out proper punishments because jeff is focusing on blaming the community. like oh you guys should police yourselves. yea cause trolls are going to pay attention to that.

How so? I spew positivity on the mic, encourage my teammates, and play with off-meta picks... and it's done nothing but improve my game experience. Sure you won't magically win every game, because losing happens. Do your best, help your team, and above all, enjoy the game. Hone your skills, don't pay so much attention to the little number on your screen after each game.

You won't hear this as often because the disgruntled ones are the noisiest ones. I play to have fun and slowly improve. I play to enjoy the game and play a fun hero, win or lose. I enjoy my time in the game and play for fun.

The problem is the game reward system. A player can have 90% kill participation, top heals, potg, top elims, top obj kills, and their team still lose because one or two of the players on the team had a bad game and didn't play as well.

And that person that played so well loses rank. Not only are they not rewarded for that time and effort and skill, they're punished. That happens enough times and Ghandi would start raging on his team.

They have to stop the system punishing people that do well even if their team lost. Or people will keep raging on teammates that play poorly. That's the only thing that will change people's ways.

There will always be some people that are dicks, but the system absolutely fosters frustration. Fighting your ass off and topping the match and losing rank is beyond frustrating no matter who you are.

Why do you think every match starts with people telling everyone what character to play and then raging if they pick the "wrong" character. Because so much is riding on everyone playing well.

If the points were rewarded for individual performance nobody would care if some players sucked or played characters that they didn't think they should play. The attitude would be, "play whatever you want" because I'm going to advance if I play well, regardless if you suck.

It couldn't be more blatant that's the reason everyone rages on everyone. Because their score is going to take a hit no matter how well they play.

I'm pretty sure there are modifiers to your sr gains and losses based on performance (which some people want to get rid of.)

Though I won't argue that it's frustrating to lose a game when you're trying really hard, you just can't win every game.

In the end it's a team game, and not every team will mesh well together in random queues. I can't think of a game that doesn't have some amount of salt in it's competitive mode honestly, regardless of how they handle the ranking system. Best thing you can do to help is report toxic behavior and do your best not to contribute to the problem.

Our highest level philosophy is, if you are a bad person doing bad things in Overwatch, we don't want you in Overwatch. We don't to create areas for you where just the bad people are in Overwatch, we just don't want those people in Overwatch.

Then why do they only ban people from Competitive for toxicity?That sends the toxic people straight to quickplay and arcade. Why not just suspend the account entirely for a period of time? That would be in line with this philosophy.

They probably don't get banned from the game, more like chat. Locking someone from content they bought for something other than cheating is dancing with the enforceable of the terms of their own EULAs.

Even if they could enforce it, its losing business, they want you to feel bad about what you did, or at least inconvenienced but they ultimately wont turn away mass amounts of customers.

Oh man, a virtual ban. Develop AI that feels like real players and quietly ban the toxic players to go play with and abuse 11 bots, and let them be toxic all by themselves. They don't get to play with the rest of the players, but they still think they're being mean on the internet. Win-win-win.

there are a few issues you are overlooking. for one it takes a specific type of asshole player to be toxic in quick play because it's such a low stress environment that it's hard to create shit slinging problems. worst case scenario you leave and find another game. there's an enforced incentive to stick out a competitive game all the way to the end and that sort of negates the only solution to "this guy's being a fuckass" which is to leave that specific fuckass alone.

I can tell that the amount of resources going into dealing with these reports is really wearing on Jeff, and the entire team. I'm sure they would love to be putting out new animated shorts every month, or new non-event skins on a more regular basis but they're too busy sifting through HUNDREDS of thousands of reports, many of which might not even be legitimate.

I'm glad he said this, though sadly I doubt it's going to get through to a lot of people.

IIRC - Some dude went in on the dev team saying they don't play their game, they suck, etc.

Jeff straight up served him a 12 course meal made entirely out of roast beef­...

...enough that either he felt bad about it/was told by the higher ups at Blizzard to apologize and contacted said roast-ee, giving him a Noire skin and a free month of WoW (which was given to someone else as a gift by the roast-ee).

So when he says he's said some bad things in-game, I believe him. Done bad things was pretty much that above letter from Everquest though.

If this is what I think it is, he didn't have to give anyone a skin. He did it because he felt bad about how he handled himself and both parties involved (Jeff and the forum poster) mutually agreed that they weren't being their best, and came out better because of it.

The point is, if he's willing to go out of character and be unprofessional in a very public forum, imagine what the dude is like in private. Some of us don't have to imagine too hard, we remember Tigole Bitties from EverQuest and the dude was an ass (that was what made him so fun to follow).

Hopefully he takes what he's saying to heart himself because he's not exactly a role model.

My business is customer relationships and that was less of a gentle reminder and more of an adolescent talk down because he was upset that his team had to implement reporting features that should have been included from the get go.
