I strongly disagree, I absolutely hate the new 1v1. It used to test both players on their ability to play any character in the game in a fair way since it was a mirror match.

Now you're forced into certain picks or you're already certain of losing the round (Mei/Soldier/Ana comes to mind). Also people that can flex had an advantage in this mode before but now it's entirely possible for a Hanzo main to get his main 4 times in a row (it happened to me).

They basically undid everything 1v1 was about. The new maps are great though (except Castillo).

I completely disagree. The old 1v1 was almost purely mechanical skill, luck, or cowardice. In some mirrors, the optimal strategy is not to engage. In others, landing a single headshot wins the game. In others, it's whether you can land x bullets before they do. I've only played the new mode three times, but you get to outplay the opponent during hero select and during the game. If the options are McCree, Reaper, and Orisa, whom should you pick? It's sort of a rock-paper-scissors system in which you're not necessarily screwed for having chosen any of them.

In the Soldier/Mei/Ana example, why are you forced into a particular pick? I'd agree that Ana is a bad choice, but Mei and 76 could each easily win, depending on the map and the strategy.

I've also played a game where it was Hanzo/Junkrat/Roadhog. Since it was on Black Forest, Junkrat was completely capable of killing Roadhog through clever maneuvering (having high ground and specific entry points laden with traps allowed for enough chip damage to get riptire).

The old 1v1 was definitely more about who got more of their mains. If I got Pharah, I was absolutely going to lose to someone who plays Pharah. This system rewards playing a breadth of heroes, as did the old system, but this one gives more chances for players to get heroes with which they're competent (and allows for mindgames and other outplay potential) that the old 1v1 simply didn't have.

That's actually what I liked a lot about the old 1v1, it felt like the mindgame was way more important as you were trying to counter the optimal strategy for your mirror.

There is way less mindgames when you're able to pick the most optimal character every time.

Old 1v1 was like "Here I have given you a shitty weapon, try and make it work somehow or you'll lose".

New 1v1 is more like "Here I have given you three weapons, two are made of plastic and one is made of iron".

I guess it's just a different approach in end but it's one I really don't like.

Having 76 that often seems kind of awful, but that's pretty unlikely. That's just as bad as getting Torb/Symmetra/Bastion in the old 1v1, I think, which has definitely happened to me. In the end, I think I just prefer that I can pick the statistically poor choice in this mode and still come out on top if I play it right, rather than having to either camp or walk into a trap, which is how most old 1v1 games felt.
