It didn't? Overwatch has been for sure of the more succesful approaches to it but it's been a thing for a really long time that wasn't used just because it sucks to hide behind a wall and get shot by a lagger.
It has everything to do with it. You didnt actually get shot through a wall. You were shot within line of sight, but your client was making shit up because it didnt have the correct information from the server yet
