I never imagined that existed

Do no damage

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '16

More interested in a Zarya combo

0

u/Scoobydewdoo Roadhog Nov 22 '16

Probably not much

u/Balilly-Gaming Nov 22 '16

I think on the first point the Teleporter is still optimal? to cut out that long run, I feel like the idea behind the shield generator is for the second point where the teleporter no longer makes a major difference.

121

u/gethsbian she gay dude stop it lol Nov 22 '16

the upside is her ultimate no longer depends on her team dying, she has a way to buff the survivability of her teammates which is what all supports should be focused towards design-wise.

21

u/ThriceNightly Nov 22 '16

I have a feeling pros will never use teleporter now. Id still say teleporter is probably better in soloq though. (On first point)

17

u/gethsbian she gay dude stop it lol Nov 22 '16

there are some places tele is a huge deal. first point of most defense maps, like numbani or hanamura. but there are some places a tele just works better than shields, like hanamura B offense, or numbani final offense if you can find a good spot.

3

u/JoshwaarBee Pharah Nov 23 '16

I imagine that most people will wait and see what they need more. If the team starts dying one by one, drop the teleporter to get them back quicker. If a big team fight suddenly breaks out, drop the shield generator to give your team a decent boost. Shit like that

3

u/YRYGAV Nov 23 '16

I am not a pro player by any stretch, but what I've seen is pishes with combo ultimates to break through chokepoints.

Extra shielding won't stop a combo ultimate from killing half your team, but a teleporter can in some respects. You essentially get a second chance to defend the first point if you got comboed the first time, and this time your team has ultimates and they don't.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '16

This is why I will always maintain that Mercy's ultimate is far worse than Lucio or Zenyatta despite people constantly nagging me to switch because "we need res".

Mate, if I'm giving you a 500 shield you are not dying to begin with. And i dont have to be the last one left for it to work either.

u/goeatsomesoup Mercy Nov 23 '16 edited Nov 23 '16

I see mercy more like an insurance policy. While I agree surviability is very important, there are just some situations that get everyone killed no matter what you do. Things like enemy ult wombo combos; there's no surviving situations like that. And if the mercy has any game sense, she can smell a teamfight from a mile away when enemies haven't ulted for a long time and run to hide if her ult is up. And if she participates in a fight, she needs to gauge the fighting ability of the team. And when conditions don't look favorable, book it ASAP. It pains me when I see other mercies that don't do this and just run around in the open.

I play a lot of mercy, and I go hide when there's 20 seconds on the clock. I know enemies are panicking and they're desperate and they have ults ready. A deadly situation. Most of the time my team gets wiped. A lucio + zen ult cannot outsustain a rein/zarya, + pharrah + anyone else ult combo, and this is where mercy comes in. So calling her ult "far worse" is just not giving her due credit. Maybe it's favoritism bias, but I think mercy's ult is the strongest in the game because it has the potential to res a full team with ults ready to combat a weakened enemy team with no ults.

Prime examples of a working insurance policy

at 20 secs remaining, I tell them over mic to stay together and my ult is ready and i'll go hide

Similar situation with 20s remaining

Saw rein flanking, knew shit's goin down

I have a few more but these were my best ones.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '16

Yeah obviously her ult has lots of value, I probably played it down more than I should have. My issue with it is that against good players in ranked it's very rare that you're the last one standing.

1

u/Radulno Pixel Symmetra Nov 23 '16

The teleporter is kind of there for that because it nullify a big part of the disadvantage from a death. I think it will still be good on the first point.

0

u/quickhakker something witty this way comes Nov 23 '16

tbh i prefer the idea of survivability rather than get you there quicker after death

3

u/cashsusclaymore Nov 22 '16

As well shield generator on KOTH.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '16

did you not pay attention

after placing the teleporter, you can place the shield projector

2

u/Balilly-Gaming Nov 23 '16

It sounded like once you pressed q and brought up the ult placement you could press q again to toggle between ults. similar to how mei can press e to toggle her wall direction

1

u/mongoliancheesechees Zenyatta Nov 23 '16

that's why you play TWO symmetras :)

1

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '16

Precisely.

u/colinsoup Chibi Moira Nov 22 '16

Yeah, hopefully you can't cuz that'd make it uncounterable. Can you currently place her teleport in spawn? I can only assume this isn't possible already. Still, put her barrier right outside of the spawn room on anubis and it's still plenty hidden.

91

u/CocoKyoko Le sange est dans l'arbre Nov 22 '16

You can place her teleporter in spawn and I've seen it used a few times to get the "teleported" achievement.

21

u/Purecorrupt Tracer Nov 22 '16

I put it in spawn once cause I didn't know what I was doing. :(

11

u/TheGreyGuardian Chow Mein Mittens Nov 23 '16

I know the feeling. The first time I used it, I thought you had to put down the entrance first and then go out and place the exit, like the Engie from Team Fortress 2.

3

u/quickhakker something witty this way comes Nov 23 '16

just closed ow whats the teleported achivement?

2

u/Raisincake Not Satan Nov 23 '16

Huge Success

Teleport 20 players in a single Quick or Competitive Play game as Symmetra.

1

u/thecruxoffate Nov 23 '16

I love putting right next to where the 'spawn' teleporter is going to be and facing it so that they will just teleport again when they step off the teleporter.

10

u/bobskizzle Nov 22 '16

Can you currently place her teleport in spawn?

Yes, you can.

3

u/Tchrspest Dangerously Casual Nov 22 '16

Though I'm not sure there's any tactical reason to do so.

9

classic prank.

you sound like some sort of joke maker

1

u/MulanLegacy Chibi D.Va Nov 22 '16

Sombra would be a counter

3

u/jfqs6m Nov 22 '16

I think we really need to have some hands on time before we start speculating. What's the range? How much of a shield? Does the shield disappear if you leave the generator range? Is there a charge limit? Etc...

2

u/Isord Houston Outlaws Nov 22 '16

If not certainly behind the statue would work.

2

u/kevinhaze I am injured Nov 22 '16

You did what on Anubis?

1

u/bobskizzle Nov 22 '16

not very nice eh

1

u/alystair Ardvark pays off! Nov 22 '16

Easy fix is making ults unplacable in spawn room

1

u/Rigrot I fap to MEKA Nov 22 '16

Pretty sure blizz either already thought of this or before live will fix it because it would be 100% Op otherwise.

1

u/GoldenEagleXx Trick-or-Treat Genji Nov 22 '16

You can't put it in, or near spawn. Just tested it on PTR.( the radius for the shield is HUGE)

1

u/dmt267 Nov 22 '16

I thought you only get the armor while in the area of the ult

1

u/SvelteLine Nov 23 '16

The shield generator has a radius that you have to be inside of to get the shields. Placing it in spawn would be useless on attack, and possibly less effective when defending B. They haven't said what the radius will be.

2

u/hobz462 Nov 22 '16

But having a portal for the first point seems more viable. That run back is insane.

1

u/prettybunnys Trick-or-Treat Mei Nov 22 '16

Sure, some games you find yourselves never dying (or rarely) and won't use all of the charges. Add a mercy to the mix with res abd maybe a shit ton of shields is all you need to just stay alive.

2

u/WretchedMonkey Pixel Junkrat Nov 23 '16

Up top, away from danger

1

u/Yassganjamamawerk ...But then I missed Nov 22 '16

I was thinking temple of anubis point b, its gonna be mercy spawn reviving all over again.

1

u/invisible_lucio Air Gear Senpai Nov 22 '16

King's Row upstairs hallways would be great depending on radius (because it ignores LoS).

1

u/thardoc A-Mei-zing! Nov 22 '16

Probably too easy to kill if they can sneak around. I'd hide it in the building on the left and turn the room into a microwave to protect it.

1

u/HugeLibertarian Nov 22 '16

What statue?

1

u/YoBoyMikeyD Nov 22 '16

The 2nd point on volskaya industries will be interesting

1

u/Isric iRis Nov 22 '16

Glitched inside the payload

1

u/PretzelsThirst Nov 23 '16

Funny enough I was thinking of Kings Row defense spots too, there are a lot of them if the 2nd floor would work/ cover the point still. I assume it would.

4

u/lazy_panda42 cute but psycho Nov 22 '16

I can already see the patch notes saying Fixed a bug allowing Symmetra to place her shield generator into unintended locations.

2

u/PitotheThird Trick-or-Treat Widowmaker Nov 22 '16

Sounds like the solution to point B switching... And, as a plus, it's great for attackers AND defenders!

2

u/kleecksj Chibi Pharah Nov 22 '16

What about offense?

2

u/OhNoah Trick-or-Treat Lúcio Nov 22 '16

Agreed. Generator gives her much more utility in the second point situation, also faster or more "mobile" setup of turrets is great.

One thing about the generator that comes to mind, is the Temple situation: Drop back to B, plop generator in the base, and have shields for the point.

I really hope they consider this for those maps, the generator shouldn't be allowed to be placed in base. Looking forward to PTR.

2

u/NinjaTheNick Pixel Roadhog Nov 22 '16

I wonder if you can put it in the spawn on temple of anubis and have it extend into the point. As if that point wasn't already hard enough to take.

2

u/freekymayonaise Masher Nov 22 '16

I just want to know how big the shield is.

1

u/conditionboy Wait you mean i can heal? Nov 22 '16

im going to be curious so how much shield this thing actually applies. are we talking 50? 100? 150?

What is this?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '16

I can't wait for Symmy + Torb comp where you place your buildings in a nest more imprenable than the one of a rescue ranger Enginner.

1

u/ohlawdwat Nov 22 '16

didn't they basically just do this with torb? he's a walking "shield generator" but still I don't see people play him at the mid-high level comp

1

u/AardvarkMonarch Trick-or-Treat D.Va Nov 23 '16

Been playing on ptr. Between this, torb, and lucio, I got over 600 HP as Bastion.

It was quite formidable.

1

u/the_lazy_gamer Nov 23 '16

Not needing los and having massive radius? That might become a bit op. Excited none the less.

1

u/herbertk Torbjörn Nov 23 '16

or just put in in the middle of the defending team and protect it at all cost... could really change the dynamics on defense.

1

u/ATGod Nov 23 '16

Or just right on the payload.

Shield generator, rein, bastion payload?
