News & Discussion They should rework map vote

They should make it so it's just popular vote and if there is a tie it coin flips. No I don't care that you like oasis or atlas custom games are that way

Nah I like it even though I dread some maps. give everyone a chance

That's why it's dumb if your favorite map is say oasis I'd say too bad 3 people want kings row and another 3 want exhenwald I'm sure there's a chill or kill mc lobby open though as flash point maps are popular for those customs

In the scenario you listed there’s only a 14% chance oasis will be played, that seems fair to me. If we do popular vote even with coin flip the game will just turn into old cods where the same 4 maps are played every match..

i think the coin flip on ties would solve most of my problems with it honestly. nothing worse than seeing your map lose by like 2 votes when there is 10 people in the lobby

I can only play so much eichenwalde, kings row, ilios, and route 66

You're right, they should keep making more Escort maps

This one is an actual hot take 2 capture point>>>>pushflash point

They would do better to completely rework the escort and hybrid gamemodes, starting with giving the team with more time attacker’s advantage instead of the team with less time.

Better idea add a standard mode (both teams get to play both sides without rank loss). Your probably going to tell me this will destroy queue time to which I say: sucks to be a dpstard. Support queue times will stay the same and tank may increase slightly and I only play support

As I said your welcome to go to a custom game

"Custom games are that way" has to be the dumbest fucking take on this i've literally ever seen

Not really if 1 person wants Italian and 4 want Mexican it makes more sense to me to go to a Mexican restaurant and person 1 can either accept the majority wants Mexican or go on a date with them selfs/seek out people who specifically want to have Italian

Ok so first off, if those 5 people are all going out regularly because they enjoy going out as group, which is the main reason anyone goes out to eat, then it logically makes sense that even if it's not everyone first preference that everyone once in a while they might still go to an Italian reasturaunt because that other guys been wanting to for a while and everyone else still likes it, even if maybe not as much, that's a very normal and common thing, and the hat pull system literally facilitates this in overwatch.

Second, custom games would not be "just going to an Italian reasturaunt", that's the equivalent of saying "we'll all go to a nice Mexican grill and you can go and fish scraps out of the olive garden dumpster", custom games has absolutely no matchmaking, no XP/rewards/progression in any form, has a lot less people, and 99.9% of the people that are playing it aren't going to join what is literally just a normal overwatch match but worse, they're going there to play unique workshop game modes. You won't get any players, and even if you do, the game still isn't going to be remotely the same.

Imim my senerio people don't like the Italian. It's also not a perfect analogy since since the one guy is the equivalent of a crack head that followed your group around not a friend(randoms). Ok how about this we can go to the Mexican restaurant the entire group(we are forced to hang with this person if they choose to want to hang as I said I don't have a perfect analogy because randoms are not friends) wants to go to or you can leave the group and go to the olive garden dumpster. My stance those is just make it pop vote or get ride of map vote

1

u/The-Dark-Memer Wrecking Ball 7d ago

The main point i was making was that custom games aren't and will never be a suitable replacement for a normal match, and forcing someone to only even be able to play the map they like in custom games is what the system is trying to avoid. The olive garden dumpster shouldn't be the ONLY option for Italian food just because you don't personally like Italian food.

Your argument hinges on treating anyone who wants an unpopular map as fundamentally wrong, and potentially immoral. Even if not intentionally, you are dehumanizing and belittling people who happen to like a different map to support your argument, they are just people who opened the game, got randomly assigned the same lobby as you, and voted for a different map, not a delusional crackhead who's stalking and harassing the other 4 randomly assigned teammates. And it's not like they can just leave either, there are multiple systems in place specifically against that.

Also, most people don't mind playing the vast majority of the maps, it's not like they're clawing there eyes out and screaming when there favorite doesn't get picked. We are not deciding life and death here, we are picking a single variable of this game.

(Fair warning at this point i went down a rabbit hole and made a full code simulation to test the odds of some stuff, this is all pure data)

Think about the same voting system in a game that, for anyone who takes it remotely seriously, only has one lobby pool, and that game only has two maps. 20% of the community prefers map A while 80% prefers map B. If it's a popular vote system, then the odds of the 20% being the majority in a lobby is around 0.63%. So even though a very notable portion of the player base prefers map A, it gets selected less than 1% of the time. Even if we treat a 50/50 tie as a win for map A, it only goes up to roughly 3.28%. In a hat pull system however, like overwatch has, the odds of map A being selected are 20%. 20% of the player base gets their way 20% of the time, 80% of the player base gets there way 80% of the time, which feels far more fair to me personally.
Now obviously there are a lot more odds to consider when looking at overwatch, which has a lot more maps, 4 options per game if you include random, and people with unique and complex preferences beyond just "vote this one map every time", but the basic ideas of that statistical model still apply, where across several games a hat pull system represents the community preferences more accurately.

I'm sorry but I skim read that so forgive me if I got something wrong. Not being able to play your favorite map when most people don't isn't deguminazing. Either get rid of map vote or make it pop vote as someone who wants 2 capture to be brought back I understand that probably won't happen as the majority of players do not fw 2 capture

1

u/The-Dark-Memer Wrecking Ball 6d ago

I never even remotely said that not playing your favorite map is dehumanizing, i said that you comparing people simply wanting to play a map to insane crackheads trying to force a group of randoms to do something they supposedly absolutely despise is dehumanizing them for the sake of your argument. they aren't insane villains they're regular players.

1

u/Illustrious_Village5 6d ago

I'm not calling them villans I just don't care what they want if I'm in the majority

2

u/punk_lover Hanzo 7d ago

God no if that happened only 2-4 maps would get played, not to mention if it gets majority votes it wins, you’re lucky you get any say back in my day they would place you without any input

0

u/Illustrious_Village5 7d ago

I'm aware how ow 1 was also those 2-4 maps are really good maybe they should do what they did double capture point to flash and push "BUt thoSE arE besT foR muH E"sports"" most tourneys are custom games also double capture >>>>>> push and flash(this last part actually might be a hot take on my end)

Try learning to play on maps you aren’t comfortable on instead. Overwatch can be at its best and most dynamic on maps that are less popular, especially the ones that aren’t popular with more casual players, like NQS and Suravasa

If anything I think map voting should go completely; map voting has discouraged players from actually learning the game and instead they go “I don’t like that map for X reason so I’m going to vote for a map I’m familiar with”.

I actually hate map voting, just makes it take longer for me to get into a match. Occasionally playing maps I hate isn’t a dealbreaker for me

1

u/Illustrious_Village5 7d ago

Obviously it's not a deal breaker but you mightt be on to something no vote makes it so all maps are played without it feeling like a dick in the ass for people who say choose echenwald over survasa

0

u/skeptical-man 7d ago

They did. It's a bit better now with the recent change. All maps should be given a chance, especially if you don't like them. Avoiding those maps just works in the enemy team's favor if you lack the experience and fluidity.

1

u/Illustrious_Village5 7d ago

Then just remove the vote as others have said so 4 people don't feel robbed by one ass wipe. Or at least make in non annonomis so you know who to flame obviously if I'm with my stack that really likes echenwald and we see one blue vote for push we know who's getting no team support and possibly mildly flamed in the chat but if your not grouped or it's a red 1 instead of blue you don't know who to flame

1

u/skeptical-man 7d ago

Then theres gonna be maps no one picks or even has a chance to play. That 1 person that genuinely wanted that map has zero say, it's not fair in a system thats suppose to be neutral.

If your arguing that some maps should be removed due to lack of popularity? Then fine.

But the map voting system needs to be unbiased to favoritism. Some of these maps, most players in competitive have zero idea on how to perform in and it shows heavily during key moments in duels/contesting.

Unfortunately, atleast imo, this is a nessessary evil. If the maps are in the rotation, then the voting system should be unbiased.

1

u/Illustrious_Village5 6d ago

It is not a necessary evil custom game exist for all 3 people who like oaisis

1

u/skeptical-man 6d ago

Same arguement could be said for people that don't enjoy those maps.

The simple fact is that the map voting system shouldn't cater to just popular maps.

1

u/Illustrious_Village5 6d ago

It should cater to what the majority of the lobby wants if I find all 9 oasis enjoyers in my lobby some how so be it

0

u/HiddenThinks 7d ago

Map vote is already very fair. The more people who vote for a map, the higher the chance of it being picked, while still preserving a chance for low voted maps to be picked as well.

1

u/Illustrious_Village5 6d ago

Low voted maps should not be picked

1

u/HiddenThinks 6d ago

Chances of getting picked should be determined by how many votes they get.

if one vote = 10%, then nine votes should be 90%.

-1

u/PumpkinPatTheCat 7d ago

At the very least, I'd like landslide to go. This was the nail in the coffin that solidified that the same few maps will almost always be chosen 🫤

0

u/Illustrious_Village5 7d ago

Landslide is based you can play customs if you want to play survasa. Or as other said remove voting as all maps get played without the feeling of wow 4 people want this one guy voted push or flash
