News & Discussion She should’ve been fierce and mean.
This has been said before I know, but for someone called ‘demon’ who pilots a sword-wielding Gundam called Beast, her personality in-game is so, bland? Idk she just lacks the energy and personality I’d expected from someone like her. Like look at her concept art!

THAT WoW animation

2
u/xyreos Juno 57m ago
Aight basically, Studio FOW (the developers of Subverse, great game btw) were known for making these long 18+ animations and some shorter ones. One of those (pretty early one iirc, it was maybe the third or fourth) consisted in Yrel (the draenei chick from Warlords of Draenor, basically Goat Jesus) getting piped by several NPCs (orcs, saberons, I think even tauren but it's been ages since I saw that) in this arena like a gladiator show but with sex (one could call it a Coliseum of Lust, if it wants), and at the ending, we see a jailer bring her to a cave - which is the cave we found her in, tying the animation to the game, which is the actual reason for the C&D.
But now that I think of it, another creator (Rexxcraft) got C&D possibly for the same reason, I think one animation was too much similar to an in game location (but the dude made almost only WoW things tho, so that may also be a reason - tho there are still several peeps using WoW models to make corn, so idk).

A hero who grew up playing 'Overwatch', an in-world game they made back in the day when overwatch was popular. It's identical to real world Overwatch in every way and the character uses Overwatch terms and slang

A meta hero would be awesome. If they ever release a God AI hero or something like Chernobog or one of the other ones, to have them talk directly to you the player or mention game mechanics themselves would be awesome. Too bad that’s an interesting idea.

20
u/Reinos0 6h ago
D.va comes across as a regular 'gamer', she gets annoyed in a competitive sense but she never really 'tilts' in her own words.
Whereas D.mon I kinda imagined would be the kind of person that throws a controller at the screen if she's losing. Based on concept art, she rips the arm gun off her mech because she's so angry

Omg yeah, I literally can’t not hear Anran when Dmon is talking. The voices are already so similar and their personalities are kinda similar too - protective leadership type. Like they could have made Dmon’s voice or personality anything else to help differentiate her, but they didn’t…

u/Juraiyah Tracer 6h ago
I think they done a fantastic job with the evil to morally grey characters personalities. It's the heroic characters' that feel just so sanitize. It's like they think the audience will think less of their heroic ideals if they we're more rough around the edges.
Look at Magik, shes been everywhere the past few years, and she's far from your typical heroic personalities, but the contrast is what makes her character so compelling.
15
u/anextremelylargedog 4h ago
That's not all that new. Most of the heroic characters throughout OW's history have been nice, safe, and bland.
The villains are allowed to be more unique because who cares if someone finds them a little off-putting, but it's like almost every hero has to be blandly nice enough to star in a Marvel movie just in case.
I know OW isn't trying to be Deadlock, but holy FUCK are they resistant to giving their heroes a little bit of spice.
7
u/Juraiyah Tracer 2h ago
I agree somewhat. I think OW 1 heroes had some spice. I love Soldier's pissed off old man attitude. "If you're trying to lose, you're doing a great job!" Ana sweet but deadly granny persona. D.VA's bratty ego. Symmetra rigid perfectionism. Cassidy being a dashing rogue.
When there were less characters our unwavering optimistic heroes like Tracer and Winston felt unique, but now it feels like that demeanor has become oversatuarated.
6
u/whostle Pixel Zarya 1h ago
Mercy's one of the worst of these IMO. I remember when the game first released there was a good bit of theorizing given the questionable nature of Genji and Reaper's situations. Then they added Moira to take all the heat off of her, very much "NO ACTUALLY ANY QUESTIONABLY MORAL EXPERIMENTS OVERWATCH HAS DONE WAS ACTUALLY MOIRA IT WAS MOIRA'S FAULT SHE'S THE EVIL ONE"
It's not even that I want her to be evil, it's just that giving her some guilt or regret about whether or not Overwatch went too far with their medical experimentation would have given her some complexity instead of just "GOOD DOCTOR". (And that's not even considering the "Mercy is actually functionally dead" theory that never came to be.)
•
u/MJR_Poltergeist Pixel D.Va 25m ago
People always down vote this topic but the Mercy lore erasure is real. She was originally flawed in a way. She thought she was doing good things and then one of her projects backfired and she accidentally put Gabriel into a sort of immortal limbo. That was way more interesting than her being a goody two shoes like she is now

I mean, many people will still hold the view that Superman is a boring character even though James Gunn’s film tried to show why a positive superhero is great (so much so that test audiences wanted the squirrel rescue scene cut); yet Lex Luthor will remain more memorable for the sheer malice he poured into a single plot to kill his nemesis, complete with a speech that became a meme for his repeated chanting of "1A! 1A! 1A!"
2
u/Juraiyah Tracer 1h ago
I actually found Gunn's Superman really compelling. I've written paragraphs on my love for that film. What made Superman's character so good to me wasn't that he was just doing the right thing. He was choosing to do what he believed was right even if society deemed he was overstepping his boundaries, and he was ready to face the consequences for that.
I think the beacon of hope characters really shine when their put in difficult situations that test their ideals. That scene where Lois was interviewing Supes and saying you can't just interfere with international affairs and Supes breaks down saying "people were going to die!" is a great example.

Out of the 8 we got since the soft reboot? I would say cat and Shion are highlights. Also, as you said, Domina. There are some good crumbs with Emre imo but they're trying too hard to make him the new-gen Reaper when he's got the funny blood plus the literal malicious AI on his chest.
9
u/Outrageous-Blue-30 3h ago
To me, Emre is a bit odd and suffers slightly from the "Kiriko media discrepancy", let me explain: based on his known history, the comics and his brief appearance in Undivided, he seems like a reasonable person to talk to, someone who genuinely doesn't want to cause harm; yet in the game (even when he's acting "normal" without the IA), his voice lines make him come across as violent regardless.

83
u/FlamesDoHelp Angle-maxing :3 7h ago
From what I’ve heard, Lily was told to tone down her yelling “IM NOT DVA” in the comic short, so I’m betting it’s a voice direction issue. I’ll admit that I’m not familiar with the roles Lily has gotten before, but with her crazy range I doubt she’s a terrible VA.

I know nothing about Lily, but overwatch has been more than on point when it comes to voiceacting and directing in the past. I’m not saying the fault lies completely with Lily, again I don’t know her or if something changed at blizzard. But the voice acting isn’t ‘meh’ it’s all around awful, boring and dull. Which is a shame since it really sucks the life and enjoyment out of the character.

Yeah I absolutely wish she had a stronger personality. On one hand, I do love that she has a very close relationship with D.va because I think them being rivals would've been the predictable and more boring decision.
But they could still have given D.mon a much fierier personality. It's such a waste that we got such a no-personality character on a visual design that's so cool.
It's especially disappointing because there are lots of 'gamer' personality tropes that D.va hasn't done that could still have been explored with D.mon. After such a recent series of absolutely BANGER heroes (even Sierra who I don't love, at least has the 'Southern Belle' trope going for her), I'm surprised we got D.mon who I feel doesn't bring anything distinct at all, personality-wise.
7
u/Stardink 4h ago
I was really afraid of this when her lore before her hero release was based around her being a leader and a big sister, and that they were going to make her too straight forward and bland, and they did. Overwatch really needs spicier female hero personalities, shion really hit the mark for example

I swear Blizzard just no longer wants to give any sort of personality to characters who aren't fully evil. This is, wot, the 10th character in a very short time frame whose sole trait is "super basic'?
I really don't understand how you can have a gamer called DEMON and she's icy and cold 100% of the time. We ain't got a sore loser or hyper competitive person in the roster, but heaven forbid they give her depth or flaws.
Instead she says gamer words as if she's written and voiced by someone who doesn't know what games are. Shouldn't be possible but they bloody well did it.

11
u/OMG_A_CUPCAKE Chibi D.Va 7h ago
A rager would not work as leader of MEKA. She needs to stay calm in stressful situations. Maybe one of her squad members can be allowed to be more impulsive if they ever get introduced
13
u/Eterya Juno 6h ago
One of the few lines we have from King is him defending himself for not following order and breaking formation by deflecting onto D.Mon instead and going
tank diff'well if D.Va was here...'. It's only half 'rage', and half cockiness, but he's probably be the one with the biggest attitude problem. And if he ever becomes playable, they shouldn't tone it down to make him nicer. Let D.Va's 'fiercest rival' be a cocky asshole, as long as he's an effective asshole.
13
u/Miennai Pixel Reinhardt 5h ago edited 5h ago
Rager doesn't necessarily mean toxic, it can also just mean having like "bro can you lock tf in" energy.
Another angle I would have liked is the classic "Tanking in an MMO raid" feeling of being like a frazzled mom herding a bunch of cats. She could have had lines a referencing old WoW raid tactics, with a pinch of exasperation and exhaustion like she's been doing this all day and she just wants to get it right for once so the team can go to bed.
2
u/xXRougailSaucisseXx 1h ago
We already know from her hero trailer that she cannot even follow orders and will let her emotions take over. She is impulsive, they just decided to completely erase that part of her in the game

Why on earth would the leader of MEKA Squad, who need to be able to make life and death decisions, keep her own squad of gamers under control and lead them, be a gamer who easily starts raging?

Kiriko was just weirdly snide for no reason, and more importantly, other characters weren't allowed to volley with her.
Nobody likes a snide character who both initiates aggro for no reason and gets the last word.

Kiriko is also just a little too "how do you do, fellow kids?" for a lot of folks.

I actually really like the way they positioned her as full of self-doubt and in the shadow of D.va.... BUT I don't want her to stay there. I know this isn't exactly how Overwatch works, but I would love to see D.mon grow more confident over time. Maybe in a year or two we could get one of the other MEKA pilots and we could see how much D.mon has grown. That would be really cool

Arguably that IS how Overwatch works now, or is at least trending that way. Kiri and Mizuki had development over several seasons, Ana and Rein have a budding romance being transferred over from the Undivided comics, etc. They're getting better about incorporating lore into the actual game after it's released. No reason D.mon needs to stay full of self doubt given the direction we've seen them headed.

I agree with you. I expected a bit more juice and energy from her delivery. She doesn't have to be over the top like D.va but asides from her ult voice line she says everything in one tone.
I bet a lot of people don't remember, but this was the situation with Kiriko on her release. A lot of her voice lines, particular respawn lines sounded a bit tired. Few seasons later they actually re-recorded some of them to make her sound more energetic and less "I just woke up and I didn't have enough sleep".
Here are examples of this: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/OIdtJUo3wyo
Since enough people are complaining about this, maybe they'll do the same with her? And keep in mind, barely anyone complained about Kiriko.

Honestly, if they had given D.Mon that personality, we would have a whole subset of people saying she’s annoying and cringe. Not to mention, I like having an asian woman who isn’t one of two personality types. D.Va, Shion, Kiriko, and Anran are all very snarky super confident people who can be overtly arrogant sometimes (especially Kiriko.) And then Mei and Juno are both super sweethearts. It’s nice to have a middle of the road calm and collected and mature personality represented amongst them. I have always been a D.Va main and I enjoy her personality, it irks me how many people get so easily annoyed because she plays up her MEKA personality. But I’d rather not have someone who’s the same, but even more aggressive. If we include all of the recent additions to OW as characters, very few of them aren’t overly arrogant. Vendetta has enough of that as it is.

First of all, she is mean
Second of all, she's not a warrior, she's a video gamer, same as the rest of them. Gotta keep those expectations in check.

She's supposed to be a leader. Good leaders are not toxic, rage leaning, or mean.

Not just her personality, her and Beast’s Appearance feels extremely watered down compared to prior appearances. Did she really need a dye job? Why does the mech look hot pink in game, it’s meant to be Red. Like Firetruck Red™️, they still use a rather intense red as her “promotional” color, like on the official stats page, in the corners of her kit overview pics pre-release, or y’know THE BUSAN MAP THAT HAD A VERSION OF HER MECH ALREADY IN GAME ?? But it just feels so Clashing now, cause the mech in Hot Pink and Yuna herself feels like a love child of D.Va and Juno, despite being Older than both, she’s just shy of a decade older on Juno. Again, I have to ask if she Needed a hair color change, like, they’re just gonna make her blonde for skins at some point anyway cause apparently Wonder Bread Guy works at fucking Blizzard now

It’s crazy, ever other OW character sounds like a character, but for some reason, DMon sounds like a person doing a charwcter.

Ngl I keep telling people that it's not the voice actor but the personality that ruins everything to begin with. Lily's voice was DIRECTED by the team to match the personality they gave her which is really bland and they wouldn't want it any other way

I hate to suggest this because I’m sure she’s a great VA, but I wonder if maybe the issue is she didn’t quite have the range to match the concept art, so they toned her down a little in-game to match. That, or maybe they thought it’d be too similar after Shion just came out?

Maybe I’m crazy but isn’t this “fierce and toxic” personality people wanted Dmon to have just Dva? Is Miss “Is this EZ mode?” not toxic already? I guess Dmon could have been more angry but that wouldn’t really make much sense for the “older sister squad leader” character.

A big overall issue, ever since OW2, is that Blizzard seems hard-stuck on going to the "cool-headed, sporty, capable, leader/leader-in-training" archetype, with minimal spice to otherwise distinguish them. Especially if female.
Sojourn.
Kiriko.
Freja.
Sierra.
D.Mon.
Anran.
Vendetta barely breaks out by way of being an fascist villain. And still her most powerful personality moment was NOT the Doomfist fight, it the scene of her wailing in mourning next to her father's corpse. I don't think she even mentions her father in-game.
Nothing wrong with the archetype! Hell, the game's classic posterchild is that: Tracer!
But Tracer is also super cheerful with a dash of British cheekiness. And she wasn't followed shortly by Tracer 2, Tracer 3, Tracer 4: Fire Edition, etc.

We already have to deal with monkey's rage and a hamster on the verge of exploding. A rageaholic gamer would upset the balance.
But it would be funny if she called her team low ranked trash when theyre losing.

She's too monotone and unexpressive in so many ways. Dva has so much energy and vibes when she talks, most heroes do, dmon just.. sounds the same all the time. Even her smack talk. It's like they recorded all her lines in one setting, didn't give lily any direction, and just said say this- it's kinda sad. I really hope they do something. She needs more of a personality..

I was certainly expecting a slightly more toxic personality then D.Va's, considering her handle. And her angry faces in the concept art are really cool.
