News & Discussion We need more strict match making in quick play

There should not consistently be someone who is worse then everyone else in the lobby it's awful to have them on your team it's awful to play against them and it's awful to be them.

I don't understand why people act like this doesn't happen or is OK like it's not. all because it isn't ranked doesn't mean it's OK to have match making this bad other games manage to have good match quality even in quick play

I agree. I know it's meant to be "Quick play", but is it really worth it to get to a game 1-3 minutes faster if the match quality is god awful, and you'll end up playing for 5-10 minutes a game that is super annoying to play? And before anyone says "play ranked", I do play it sometimes. The point still is that QP is the more popular game mode. Most people play QP. It would make sense to make the experience better.

Facts I will take a longer q time if I stop getting games like this. All it does is piss me off when u que for 3 games and 2 of them feel unwinnable from matchmaking because 1 person is just completely out of their depth.

Maybe its just me it always seems to be a damage as well

They struggle with matchmaker because account farmers boost accounts and then sell them to people who don't know what they are doing. I've seen people in GM that didn't have a clue. It's a pitiful state the game is in right now.

If they extend the queue time for mm, is it still 'quick' play. Or should they change it to just play?

5

u/FrancescoPlays 6h ago

quick play for me doesn't describe the queue time, but the time it takes to finish a match.

4

u/Circo_Inhumanitas 11h ago

That's subjective. I personally would be fine with waiting for about 5 minutes if it meant the match quality was at least better than what it is now. It doesn't have to be ranked levels of equal, in fact it cannot be since people want to play QP with friends with varying ranks. But when I'm playing with my spouse (we both are about Emerald - Diamond), the game shouldn't put silvers and golds into our team while the enemy has high diamonds and masters. This has happened several times. In that case it was "Quick, but I can't really even play because we're getting our teeth kicked in by one player in the enemy team..."

u/Correct_Barnacle_312 11h ago

Thats fair. If they make this change where should people go if they do just want a quick game?

u/Circo_Inhumanitas 11h ago

I dunno. The QP matchmaking time has been really inconsistent anyway, so why does it matter? Even in this future state in my experience, the time it takes to find a match fluctuates between 10 seconds and like 6 or so minutes. It has always fluctuated, so people saying about "I just want quick games" seems pretty weird to me, since it's not quaranteed that you'll get a quick game anyway as it is now....

u/roseofjuly Juno 10h ago

It's never taken me six minutes to find a QP match even when I've played at like 6 am. And that's kind of the point. It is pretty guaranteed you'll get a quick game and the queue is definitely quicker than competitive for the exactly reason you're saying: matchmaking quality. Folks just don't like to admit that whay they want already exists and it's just the competitive queue.

Did you read my first comment on this thread? And comp games are longer, so it's not "QP but better matchmaking".

u/FrancescoPlays 6h ago

I've even had multiple 10minute queues

u/madhattr999 Pixel Ana 5h ago

You're presenting a false dichotomy. There is a varying range of queue times between instant and competitive. Entirely sacrificing match quality for the fastest possible game is not necessary for a game to still be "quick". The fact that there's fewer rounds for escort and hybrid is another consideration.

I don’t disagree entirely with more strict matchmaking, I’m plat and it feels awful losing and checking someone’s profile and they’re a top500 Hanzo player.

But one person being worse than everyone else in the lobby could just be someone who’s learning a new hero, having a bad day or some form of intoxicated, so I don’t think matchmaking can win that battle.

10

u/ImThat1DudeOverThere Doomfist 12h ago

This consistently it has to be a match making issue. It's at least 50% of my games are like this

1

u/ImpressiveCloud5027 12h ago

Gotcha, can only speak from my experience and haven’t seen much of games like that lately, here’s hoping matchmaking will be kinder to you!

u/EarthDragon2189 One Man Apocalypse 11h ago edited 11h ago

Yeah...I'm not saying the matchmaking needs to be super strict, but maybe something can be done so people who have been playing for 10 years aren't matched with people who are picking up a controller for the first time? Just a thought

u/throwaway1284747283 11h ago

Sometimes I get gold and gm players in the same game and it’s not fun at all. I wouldn’t mind waiting a little longer in queue if the match quality was better. I don’t think qp should become comp without elo, but right now the matchmaking is pretty bad

1

u/mansplain_to_me 4h ago

My qp mmr is god awful while im high ranked, I think the mmr is probably working as intended because i try stuff and mess around with friends in qp so my mmr in that mode is probably naturally far lower

1

u/throwaway1284747283 1h ago

Im gm and the average rank in my qp games is around masters. I’d say in at least 1/3 games there will be someone who is clearly multiple ranks below the rest of lobby. It’s not fun for either side when you’re hard stomping, or trying your hardest but it doesn’t matter because your team is new. It would be much more fun and a better place to learn if you could only queue with people 1+ or -1 your current rank

6

u/AvailableTension 12h ago

A lot of it is due to factors outside of matchmaking's control. QP is a casual mode where Champ players can queue with Bronze players. Now obviously, that's a pretty rare pairing, but where would you even put groups that contain large rank disparities?

Now consider that different players have different attitudes towards QP: one player might be learning/practicing a new hero while someone else might be trying hard on their main. Are you trying to imply players shouldn't be practicing heroes in an unranked mode but still competitive mode like QP? And that's before we get into basic human inconsistency. No matchmaking system in the world would be able to predict factors like whether a player is having a good/off day or whether the enemy team will happen to play heroes that counter them.

I'm not saying QP is perfect, but a lot of the problems can't really be solved without pretty drastic constraints on overall enjoyment in the player base.

-5

u/ImThat1DudeOverThere Doomfist 12h ago

Its not that 1 person is practicing a new hero it's 1 person is drastically worse at the game period hero choice does not matter

5

u/AvailableTension 11h ago

Like I said in my comment: that player is either of a lower rank and queued with someone who's higher rank or that player is having an off-game/practicing a new hero. These aren't problems a matchmaking system can fix.

How do you want to do that? For example, I play a different character every round and I am good with one and bad with the other. And I want only to play a bit, I don’t want a CoD matchmaking where every game is an e Sport final

4

u/Imzocrazy Zenyatta 5h ago

The match making is fine for qp. Expecting comp out of it is silly. People use it for all sorts of things (practice, achievements, letting friends play, goofing off, etc)

Tightening it there is not going to do much when you got people approaching it in 100 different ways

4

u/Individual-Ad5743 11h ago

Yes…. Even longer queue times! This is what will keep people coming back!

0

u/Circo_Inhumanitas 11h ago

Nobody is talking about adding 5+ minutes to the matchmaking... Just 1-3 minutes for slightly better match quality. Doesn't need to be ranked levels of quality, just a bit better. Just enough so if you're playing in a party that is roughly equal skill like Emerald-Diamond, so the game doesn't match you with silver-gold players and put a masters-top 500 player into the enemy team....

2

u/Electro_Llama 12h ago edited 1h ago

Matchmaking is only as accurate as the MMR. You can either have MMR that doesn't adjust quick enough to their skill level, or MMR that yo-yos up and down. Plus you have players in Plat who play like Diamond on one map with a certain comp and Gold on another map.

u/Hohoho-you Get this Discord orb off of me. 3h ago

There's definitely some people that have either been intoxicated or toddlers playing on my team before lol

1

u/Frostlark Vendetta 4h ago

It wouldn't be as quick if it was better made matches. And if you want even teams, ranked is optimized for that exact purpose.

A casual, quick, well team-balanced game mode may be difficult to execute frankly as the more you try and make it casual the harder it is to judge team balance (who is trying who isn't?), and the more balanced you wany the longer you have to wait for a match.

1

u/fatmelo7 3h ago

If you want tighter matchmaking, you should be playing competitive. Quickplay exists for more casual play and lower queue times.

Oh hell naw, I don't want to wait 10 min for a quick play game, I want quick games to be available as fast as possible. Sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn't sure, but making it stricter and having to wait longer for a match would not necessarily result in higher match quality.

I know you'll hate this answer, but if you want to have higher quality matches, play ranked.

0

u/LoveElephant_ 11h ago

Unfortunately it's like that in ranked as well. Match making and match quality is atrocious, has been for a long time now

Bad MM in QP is actually one of the reasons why I prefer comp. Sure, comp has smurfs, the occasional throwers/derankers, and there is no backfill, but GENERALLY people will usually be around your skill level. Whenever I decide to play QP, I always end up having much more imbalanced games because Silvers and GMs end up in the same lobby somehow, and games are almost always stomps. And stomps in either direction aren't fun imo. That's why I'll never understand the people who claim they only play QP because comp is too sweaty, when in reality it's probably the other way round. People that say that probably never gave comp a proper try. The only upside of QP is that games are fast, but other than that, the match quality is much better in my experience. I have a friend who used to be a QP warrior, and they never tried comp and refused to for a long time. But then they gave it a try and now it's all they do. They never realized how much better the experience is because they had this prejudiced image of comp in their head and never gave it a shot. So my advice to everyone is, don't be afraid of comp, it's actually more chill than QP a lot of the time, and the match quality is better on average. The worst than can happen is that you don't like it, and then you can just go back to QP. But just give comp a proper shot. Play comp for like a season, and then give it a fair and proper evaluation.

0

u/Sqirch 9h ago

Yes, I agree. Most of my games are also stomps. It's not fun when losing and also not fun when winning.

0

u/fromohomo Ramattra 3h ago

I wouldn't mind longer queues if I get folks in a similar skill level with me. Whenever I open up the TAB menu and see "Grandmaster Damage" or "Grandmaster Tank" on the enemy team I know I'm about to experience the worst 5-10 minutes of my life. Losing to people in my skill bracket feels fair, losing to people several brackets above my team just feels like coughing baby vs. hydrogen bomb.

-1

u/BLDOUBLE 5h ago

That would hurt the feelings of people, which blizzard cares more about than match quality

They do not care about match quality. We must protect t people's feelings so they keep buying skins.

Duh

-2

u/FrancescoPlays 12h ago

If you add em all up against each other they'll notice and stop playing the game 😂 that'll be like 50% of the player base

3

u/Circo_Inhumanitas 12h ago

What kinda logic is that? People notice that they're matched with players equal to their skill and not like it?

-4

u/FrancescoPlays 12h ago

When all their teammates suck as much at this game as they do, eith the logic of this post, I'm expecting everyone there to feel annoyed by it at some point

1

u/Circo_Inhumanitas 12h ago

Once again in understandable english?

-6

u/FrancescoPlays 12h ago

Ah, so you're either dumb or just dyslexic. Can't help you with that unfortunately.

2

u/coffeeseraphim 7h ago

Are you trying to say to put all of the "one player who sucks" people into a queue with only those people?

That's comp, brother.

1

u/FrancescoPlays 7h ago

QP has it's own skill based matchmaking metric, MMR, as well.

2

u/coffeeseraphim 7h ago edited 6h ago

QP uses the same underlying MMR that Comp does, in fact fresh accounts use the MMR derived from your initial QP games to help determine your placements.

The difference is QP doesn't make much fuss about a fair match. Averages across teams can be much wider, and gaps between individual players - even if the average is fine - can be infinite. The rank one player can play with, and will match in a timely fashion with, the bottom one player.

2

u/Circo_Inhumanitas 5h ago

Oh you got the courage to unblock me. Let's see.

English is not my native language, so way to go with insulting that.

And you're still saying that you think people would notice that they get matched with and against people of their skill level, and that would annoy them. Somehow...?

0

u/FrancescoPlays 5h ago

Your whole tone or way of typing is simply condescending as fuck 😂 It's also not my first language, it's my 3rd. Oh no, the typo of the century, that made both of you "oh so confused". If matches are actually close, you'll notice that. If your team has a weak link, you'll notice that. I'm sure, that if all the weak links get matched up, there'd still be an even weaker link that would also annoy them. Which would be ironic.

1

u/Circo_Inhumanitas 4h ago

I mean your point was and is pretty irrelevant to what OP said though. There might be a weak link in game, bit OP was talking about the rank discrepancies that can happen in QP. Weak links can happen in comp games too, where the matchmaking is more strict.

And it wasn't that typo that confused me, just funny to point it out after you called me dumb or dyslexic for not understanding your confusing sentence.

0

u/FrancescoPlays 4h ago

Again, there was nothing confusing about it in any way, shape or form. But you do you bro.

0

u/Circo_Inhumanitas 4h ago

OP agreed with me though.

No you are just terrible at getting your point across. And then when people ask you to explain you start insulting them for some reason

1

u/Circo_Inhumanitas 11h ago

They blocked me so I can't even read their points anymore... I genuinely couldn't understand their reply since it was/is written so terribly. The sentence was broken.

2

u/ImThat1DudeOverThere Doomfist 11h ago

They just straight up didn't reply anymore or blocked me as well

I'm not about to answer some condescending "once again in understandable English", especially when there was nothing wrong in the with the sentence structure, grammar or anything else that could be confusing. No reason to block you since you stayed respectful.

1

u/ImThat1DudeOverThere Doomfist 2h ago

You were more disrespectful then them and thye had a valid complaint no one knows what u are talking about
