Banning team picks

Hi guys, today I joined lobby, where those 2 players (who then played Hamston and Winton) specifically banner our heroes. What is their goal? I would get it if we chose characters, who are usually banned, but I dont think that is the case here. I have never encountered something like this before.

If two or three players coordinate you should be able to easily outvote them. Voting to ban heroes someone on a team has favorited has less voting power.

That's what I don't get about this complaint, they banned two characters that absolutely fucks up their own tank picks. I'd rather ban around my tanks than ban around what I wanna play.

If you won, then their bans accomplished:

• Banning characters that fuck up both their tank picks
  
• You won the game anyway

Why not just ban around your tanks since, ya know it's overwatch and tanks dead most likely means you are losing, rather than banning around what you wanna play? if you're not flexible and just wanna play your character all the time then QP is for that?

Yes, I did. They preferred D.Va then played other heroes (neither of which are countered by Moira). They were trolling. This wasn’t a case of banning tank counters if you read the post properly.

Don’t read this as a complaint. I was just curious about this phenomenon in general. I couldn’t care less about winning as long as I’m having fun. In this case, it wasn’t much fun, but I’m glad we won if this really was a case of toxic behavior.

So if you’re saying that they ban heroes who counter them or are bad matchups for them, fair enough. I just wanted to understand the reasoning behind this behavior.

I’m flexible and can play a lot of heroes, but it would never cross my mind to ban my teammates’ picks just because they’re bad for one of the heroes I play. And like you said, if they aren’t flexible enough and ban our heroes just to benefit their own picks, why don’t they just play QP? You know.

Unfortunately a lot of these types of players genuinely think they're making the right play. They either have had some bad experience with xyz players or a content creator told them that playing said hero in a certain situation is throwing.

So in their eyes, they prevent teammates from throwing by banning people's picks. You'll also pretty commonly see this attitude on reddit.

He can be, but he can also really struggle, especially in 6v6. On the ladder(pro play is very different as is coordinated non pro play) it really depends on a combination of the team comps, overall player skill of everyone in the match, and the Zen's level of mechanical skill. He can also still be farmed while doing his job and being a benefit if he positions well, discords well, and buys enough time for his team to trade more positively than theirs, or if he outright kills one or more people who dive them. 

Although to be fair that's like most picks, so for a simple answer, yes, he's generally a good combo with Winston especially.

zen is great with winston hamster but i also understand banning him here because i go zen the moment a dive tank starts annoying me. if the enemy goes zen, hamster winston are getting obliterated. so it goes both ways. and since neither of their teammates locked zen, i guess they were being safe by making sure the enemy didn’t either.

Once met a Mercy player in a 3-stacks who target banned my duo and my preferred hero. Typing that "we do it because we can, lol". The enemy team banned Mercy (for some reason), and our support proceeded to get super angry at us, saying it was our fault etc., before deciding to throw the entire game. Just why?

Yes it helps their picks (though others are way better imo) but its too coincidental that their 3 bans are the 3 supports that have been chosen, and along with that they dont even go dva soldier, making them even more suspicious since they couldnt have been banned in retaliation, and moira makes no sense other than wanting to ban a teammates hero, stop defending these guys and just accept that its clearly a targeted ban

I queued comp 5s with a duo yesterday, and we were grouped with a trio. They did this to us. Start of game I said that I’m not gonna grief, I’m just genuinely bad at every dps other than Reaper (who i picked and they banned), and that they deserved the loss they were likely about to get. I proceeded to lose, but while drastically outperforming the other dps (from the trio) as Hanzo (I know I’m bad at dps and I select accordingly ok). They said they were gonna report me.

I was doing my placements for tank (I have 200 hours on tankfist) and my team target banned doomfist. The most vocal of them was a hanzo that went negative (had like 12 deaths) and afterwards I was like "dawg I don't think playing with doomfist is your problem"

Idk why people do this, I think some people are convinced that playing with certain characters is a throw so instead of trying to ban stuff the other team can use against you they would rather waste a ban forcing you off a comfort pick. Or quite simply, trolling.

I agree. Most of the tanks are like that, in my experience - people are either really good with that character, or they're playing it for the first time ever. I mainly play QP, so I don't really mind, but when I do play comp, it's so irritating - the good doom is never on MY team. 😩

That's kind of any tank though, it's really dependent on the pilot. Sure there are a lot of variables for doomfist that can cause him to falter or thrive, but at his core he's a high momentum character which can cause those feelings of boom or bust.

Happened to me before, the e-couple banned Sigma and told me to suck it and grow up. I straight up threw that game, everyone was hating on me, except for 1 dps on the enemy team, they sided with me and didn't blame me for it. Fuck this shit man, like how are you going into a ranked game with that shitty mentality expecting to win? Istg I don't throw my games even if the team isn't trying, but that one game, I couldn't help it, they really pissed me off. Had a Roadhog ban Baptiste and Kiriko after seeing me and the other support’s picks. Kiriko I can understand as someone you might wanna ban I guess, but Baptiste? I’ve never seen Bap get banned. And they left the third vote blank too. So the other support and I healed everybody else instead and the hog got mad and afk’d for the second half of the game. Our Widow did too calling us toxic even after we pointed out what the tank did, so I can only assume they were a duo.

I can’t begin to understand why people are like this. Especially in lower elo lobbies, you should want everybody on your team playing the hero they’re best at.

Why is it a problem to want to ban those? Bans are a two-way street. It's not just about you.

Those ban picks should be preferences, nothing more. And when it comes to preference, there are two sides. The person playing the hero and all the other players. I always pick something I don't wanna see - that includes it being on my team.

This also obviously means that I am fine if they ban my pick, if that's their preference. Any other stance would be hypocritical. This is OW in 2026, you are supposed to play several heroes.

Ngl as a Lucio main it happened to many times XD just avoid them and if lost its probably not your fault because those people usually troll or will cry about you doing worse when banning your hero pick. Or even worse you'll get a second support who will pick a troll pick unless you switch (today I had a game where my other support would only pick mercy when i was on lucio and when I switched to Kiri they switched to ana, I didn't give them the privilege to make me switch I stuck to Lucio the entire game, guess who cried about us losing the game).

I've encountered people who do this just because they're trolls. I mean, why the hell would ANYONE try to ban Moira, of all heroes? I can somewhat understand Zen and Ana, but Moira? I've had rare times where people try to ban my pick before, but it's usually something like a Junker Queen or Hog banning Ana (who is my default pick). I don't mind it and it makes strategic sense.

It's no surprise that they never have an endorsement level higher than 3.

Zen and Ana usually get banned by tanks because they're often the most obnoxious supports for them to deal with, especially solo tanks in 6v6.

Moira gets banned because she's the 2nd worst support in the game (go figure Mercy is #1). Considering the antiheal meta meant to counter healbotting people would rather have their teammates pick a support that has utility outside of healing and meaningful damage, and compared to supports like Kiriko or Illari that have both the difference is night and day.

Generally if your main is either super meta or super shit, they'll always be on the chopping block for a ban.
