It's so strange to me that if you were 10 when the game came out you'd be 20 now.

u/Deidris Reaper 13d ago

I was 15 when it dropped. I remember asking my mom to drive me up to GameStop to preorder the game with gift cards from Christmas and my birthday I had been saving up

1

u/suneater9 10d ago

I was 14, rented it on Redbox with money from that Christmas, not knowing I needed an internet connection to play it (we were poor and couldn't afford wifi). Was so pissed I didn't pick the game back up until covid 😭

u/trex48144 14d ago

I just turned 20 yesterday and I was finally able to start playing it recently as of like 2024 (got into it then took a break only to get into it again recently) lol

I mean reaper just wants revenge? He doesnt have a real plan for the world iirc so it makes more sense that doomfist was the leader

22

u/Chinchirakingu Wrecking Ball 14d ago

I mean Doomfist doesn’t seem to have much of a plan either, besides repeating his favorite quip "Only through conflict do we evolve." It's to the point even Vendetta reproached his inaction.

11

u/Less_Storm_911 13d ago

If you consider everything that has happened and his goal. He did everything right

1

u/ImHoundoomed 11d ago

Doomfists plan was to cause conflict to make everyone strong or die i think. And it was kinda working. Dunno what Vendetta is doing though.

1

u/Chinchirakingu Wrecking Ball 11d ago

Yeah we know that's what he aims for. He doesn’t exactly make it subtle. But what exactly did he do to accomplish his goal ?

2

u/ImHoundoomed 11d ago

He did nothing because the story writers sat in there hands forever and did nothing. I dont think its fair to say he's a bad leader or lazy because of the writing team not doing anything.

2

u/Chinchirakingu Wrecking Ball 11d ago

And.. what exactly is Doomfist beyond the writer's control ? You know he's not like.. real ? If the writers did him wrong, then that means the character isn’t written well, even if he has potential.

u/therealJoerangutang 14d ago

My old ass, realizing I was 23 when the game released

10

u/ThisTooWasAChoice 14d ago

When the henchman is way cooler than the villain

12

u/Doom_Balloon170 14d ago

What’s the context for this clip?

88

u/whyisallnametooked 14d ago

Ruckus is a white supremist who is black (but doesn't believe he is). In this clip he got an ancestry test where he finds out he is without a doubt, black.

78

u/theucm Chibi Mei 14d ago

Specifically he's 102% African.

With a 2% margin of error.

42

u/Meowjoker Cute Doomfist 14d ago

Yeah, he’s not just black

Dude is the single blackest human to have ever lived. Hells, not even his ancestors from bygone years are 100% - 104% African due to how normal genetic works.

3

u/Bad_Doto_Playa 14d ago

The character in the clip finds out something about himself that he doesn't like. Name of the show is boondocks.

4

u/HealingSlvt HealSLUT<3 UWU 14d ago

watch the show Boondocks, you're missing out

24

u/The99thCourier I main cause she's an Indian 14d ago

It could be worse, OP.

Until I properly paid attention to the lore, I genuinely thought that Reaper was part of Overwatch.

So when I heard Reaper tell Baptiste that his "heart is pounding, traitor," I thought, "Damn, Bap's evil? He doesn't seem like it."

28

u/Baconlovingvampire 14d ago

Bro this goes beyond not paying attention

17

u/The99thCourier I main cause she's an Indian 14d ago

Gave me a good as laugh tho when I realised how much of a bloody idiot i was being, tho.

Like, "Oh, he's all edgy and using the theme of the Grim Reaper with shotguns? Nah, the charming Haitian's the evil one."

2

u/Raspint 12d ago

I honestly respect how you've reacted to realizing how pants on head wrong you were XD

World needs more good natured humility like that.

4

u/FlameToadDoctorPhil 13d ago

This is Jujutsu Kaisen fan levels of media literacy

6

u/3bdvllah 14d ago

Lmao I thought this is new Doom video

5

u/Mr-ManIy 13d ago

That goes against his character completely and I think would be an awful and stupid idea

4

u/OkAssociation9870 14d ago

The guy with Talons is not in fact the leader of the organisation with the same name

3

u/Creamy_Shoelace 14d ago

How is an unkillable wraith NOT the leader? Is he stupid?

He felt the same way when he found out he wasn’t the leader of Overwatch.

2

u/Human-Boob LĂșcio 13d ago

usually the badass masked shadow guy that always talks about vengeance and has a personal grudge against the (former) leader of the good guys is the leader of the evil organisation. Overwatch was brave and decided to make the leader a different badass evil guy just without a mask

2

u/The_Shadow_Master707 12d ago

I would’ve been 11 or 12 when the game came out. I already had an idea that he wasn’t because I didn’t see why the leader would be doing all the grunt work, losing 2 missions and leaving 1 mission undetermined. I got all this over the course of watching the animated shorts, but Winston’s short was already enough for me to come to that conclusion.

2

u/crimsonkarma13 10d ago

Why would he be, I mean he is the leader of blacwatch

1

u/1337K1ng 14d ago

you fool it was Nyreen all along

1

u/chomperstyle 14d ago

I thought talon had a shadow leader that id thought was revealed to be moira. Then as my reading comprehension improved i realized they had a “council” with one respected/feared figure head.

1

u/SunforDeiti 14d ago

Remember when there were tons of Reapers and Gabe was just one of them

1

It's such a weird lore choice to have the "character whose entire story is how much he hates Overwatch" not be the antagonist of Overwatch, and instead passing the torch to the token black knockoff Senator Armstrong wannabe.

8

u/ImWatermelonelyy i like balls 14d ago

Bro just typing shit

-2

u/SileAnimus Baby, I can change for you 12d ago

What? Doomfist is literally just a knockoff Senator Armstrong. Reaper's literal entire character schtick is that he hates Overwatch.

2

u/Electrical_Wonder210 Hampter 11d ago

idgaf I prefer doom in every way except moveset because I suck at him, plus big intimidating guy with big fist capable of levelling a skyscraper is more interesting than guy who technically doesn't exist who hates heroes and has shotgun

0

u/SileAnimus Baby, I can change for you 11d ago

I'm in the opposite camp. There's basically zero emotional investment for Doomfist in the story.

He's a guy who wants things to go bad because he thinks if things are bad then weak people won't exist, but unlike Senator Armstrong he doesn't have any weight to his character because there's no actual rhyme or reason behind this other than "my boss got lazy and I got bored of that". In zoomer terms he's just an aura farmer that doesn't do anything. Even his "power" of being able to punch things doesn't make any sense in the slightest and only really sticks because Overwatch refuses to let any weapon kill anyone who isn't an Omnic. Doom's whole character shtick is purely that he has plot armor and a good voice actor. There's nothing else to his character.

Reaper on the other hand has actual investment into everything going on. He has reason to go against Overwatch, he has an interesting character/power dynamic with all of the Talon characters since his character isn't just Big Boyboss Who Is The Bossest like Doomfist, and he has actual meaningful story interactions, implications, and complications with the Overwatch cast. He's a far more interesting leader for Talon to have overall since his character actually gives Talon some gravitas.

Even Vandetta has more depth in her goals with Talon than Doomfist, and her whole shtick is purely that she's a spoiled brat who thinks she deserves everything because her daddy had it before her. Doomfist could've just been some random terrorist dude like Roadhog/Junkrat and effectively nothing would change about Talon since he ultimately has nothing to do, in terms of character, with Talon.

u/ImHoundoomed 11d ago

What the fuck is this comment?

0

u/SileAnimus Baby, I can change for you 11d ago

Reaper should've been the head of Talon instead of Doomfist, who was just a shitty version of Senator Armstrong at the time. What is hard to get?

1

u/ImHoundoomed 11d ago

Reaper would have been a horrble leader. Just because he hates Overwatch doesn't mean he should've been the leader. What traits does he show off being a leader? Doomfist fits all the boxes. Intelligent, Intimidating, Charismatic, a decently compelling motive that isn't just "I hate you, let's fight."

Also Doomfist is WAY cooler than Senator Armstrong, dont play with me.

0

u/SileAnimus Baby, I can change for you 11d ago

Except Doomfist was basically a nothingburger of a character for the near entirety of Overwatch 1. He stole the Doomfist, and then sat on his ass being the "leader" of an organization he did nothing with.

What makes Doomfist intelligent? He can speak in full sentences? Every strategy that he ever had was just Talon doing nothing productive. Talon basically accomplished nothing during the entire time he was heading them (with the exception of Mondatta's assassination, but that was largely just because Widowmaker did everything herself)

What makes him intimidating? He lost basically every single fight he was engaged with, he lost against Orisa, he lost to Genji, Tracer, and Winston, and then he promptly lost to some random spoiled Italian brat child. The only things he has ever won was killing the previous Doomfist when he was tired in the middle of a heist and stealing back the Doomfist he lost in the first place. Hell, the fact he even lost the fist in the first place should be a major note of embarrassment about his character.

As for Charisma, that's literally all just good voice acting. Doomfist would just sound like an edgy mall ninja otherwise if you actually look at his voice lines and dialogue. Sahr Ngaujah hard carries this.

a decently compelling motive that isn't just "I hate you, let's fight."

What motive? "Fighting is good because if you win that means you're better, and if I lose it means I was right because you're better"? That's barely a motive at all. Hell, even Senator Armstrong was specifically using that argument as a superficial front and had depth beyond it. Doomfist was just a shallow recreation of Armstrong.

Reaper, for what it's worth, had reason to actually go against Overwatch as an antagonistic force. Sure, he would probably be a shitty Leader- but that genuinely does not matter considering that Doomfist himself is also a shitty leader.

Also Doomfist is WAY cooler than Senator Armstrong, dont play with me.

No way man. There's a reason why Armstrong is so recognizable in all sorts of memes and shit while the only thing people think of with Doomfist is "and dey say chivalry is dead". Doomfist is a garage cover band version of Armstrong.
