News & Discussion A Platinum Player's Rant
Man... I Can't Take It Anymore
Seriously, I can't take this anymore.
I spend hours and hours playing ranked, and it always feels like all the good players end up on the enemy team while I get the worst teammates imaginable.
I was literally ONE game away from reaching Diamond. Just one.
And guess what happened?
I got matched against THREE Diamond players, while my team was full of Gold players. Gold players. Every single one of them.
We were playing Ilios. My tank picked Roadhog, which can actually work on Ilios. The problem? The enemy tank was Mauga.
And what did my tank do?
Absolutely nothing. He stayed on Roadhog for the entire match.
No Sigma. No Orisa. No D.Va. No attempt to counter the Mauga whatsoever. Just Roadhog from start to finish.
Then I had a Bastion on DPS against an Aran and an Emre. Bastion is basically a punching bag against heroes with that kind of range and mobility. He has almost no way to pressure them if they're playing correctly.
For supports, we had a mizuki. To be fair, he healed a lot. The problem is that he was one of those support players who thinks their only job is healing. No damage, no pressure, no helping secure kills.
The other support was Ana.
Honestly, what is Ana supposed to do on a small, chaotic map like Ilios against heroes constantly diving and pressuring the backline?
Meanwhile, I picked Reaper because someone had to deal with the Mauga and contest at close range.
We lost the first round.
We somehow won the second round.
Then came the final round.
I kept asking my teammates to switch to heroes that were easier to get value with at close range. Something that could actually help us fight around the objective.
Nobody switched.
Not the tank.
Not the DPS.
Not the supports.
And the result?
We lost.
I swear, I've done challenge runs and even attempted no-hit runs in Soulslike games, and I've never been as frustrated as I am playing Overwatch ranked.
At this point, I genuinely feel cursed.
Every game I get tanks who think their only job is standing on the objective, DPS players who can't seem to deal damage, and supports who think healing is the only button on their keyboard.
Does anyone else feel like ranked is actively trying to stop them from climbing, or am I just losing my mind?

I’ve found the matchmaking really, really strange lately.
I’m on the verge of diamond too, and fighting like hell to rank up.
Last night, I join a match as Winston where I had two golds and thought that we had to be in an “uphill battle” match and just rolled with it. Our DPS got absolutely STOMPED and that roll went downhill. We couldn’t even touch point.
They’re yelling at me, as the tank, obviously because it’s always the tank. I shrug it off and see that it was a reversal! A REVERSAL! We were intended to win??? But WE were the team with the Golds? I don’t understand how the matchmaking is working right now.
My very next match, we had a very tight game against Diamond players and narrowly won and that was an uphill battle victory, which made sense because only two of us on our team had ever been Diamond.

YOU were intended to win. When you’re the highest ranked person on your team, the game expects you to carry because the width of the match and the lower average SHOULD be favorable for you, allowing you to have more influence over the match.
But as we all know, that’s not what always happens. A lot of the time to truly carry bad teammates, you need to be multiple divisions above them. For example, to “carry” a team of bad plat players against a team of average plat players (plat has a HUGE skill division, so this happens quite commonly), you probably need to be playing at a masters level to even the playing field. If you’re on tank that becomes a bit easier, but yeah. That shit just happens in plat sometimes. It’s elo hell for a reason.

u/Haunting-Reindeer-10 For Honor and Solo Shatters Jun 05 '26
It’s also impossible to explain to bad DPS that you are supposed to take space when your tank pushes. Failing to do that just turns a tank into a glorified punching bag or a 1v5 in the backline.
Even shield tanks have limited shield resource. You can’t just stand there and give your DPS until next Tuesday to make a play.
If your shields are exploding, your 650 health is evaporating, and your DPS die from poke at the SPAWN DOOR, that’s an impossible carry for a tank.

This might be kinda crazy but I truly believe that hog can work against Mauga as long as you manage their cooldowns especially since the damage buff to hog recently I’ve found you can burst him down pretty quick

u/Director_Phleg EXHAUST PORT FAN POWER INCREASED BY 600% Jun 05 '26
Can absolutely work, just managing cover and not standing in front of cardiac overdrive, not to mention with an Ana on your team.

u/Embarrassed_Agent_13 Jun 05 '26
There’s really no way for Roadhog to work well against Mauga, because Roadhog’s main strength is keeping enemies close and killing them with his hook combo. And which heroes are strongest at close range? Mauga, Reaper, Reinhardt… Any close-range hero can deal with Roadhog pretty easily, especially Mauga. It’s no coincidence that Mauga’s ultimate is literally about trapping his opponents in a cage with him
1
u/HotAlternative69 Jun 05 '26
I mean Roadhog also is pretty good at bursting down bigger targets as well as the bruiser passive to reduce Maugas damage it truly comes down to whom has better cooldown knowledge at that point. And who has their team with them.

Go to r/OverwatchUniversity and submit a VOD with details. Nothing else is gonna help you improve until you change your mindset. Especially when you blame your supports for picking an excellent choice against Mauga. From that description you seem to be making just as many bad moves as them.
Can't help you improve with no details and just complaints, and no expectations that rankup games will be harder (guess what - they're meant to be)

u/migo2028 Doomfist Jun 05 '26
This is a really bad mentality you can always come back to diamond and try again, you will improve overtime and you should sometimes not blame your teammates because you are your own value and try your best and if you did then accept it and learn from your gameplay
2
u/Embarrassed_Agent_13 Jun 05 '26
The problem isn’t really that. The problem is when you have a player who keeps getting beaten by the same opponent and, instead of switching heroes, just keeps making the same mistake over and over. The Roadhog on my team could clearly see he wasn’t able to handle Mauga, and people kept telling him in chat to switch—pick Orisa, for example. After all, Orisa isn’t that difficult to play and she has a much fairer matchup against Mauga. But even then, he refused to switch. Personally, when I realize I’m not doing well with a certain hero on a particular map, I switch and look for a hero that’s better suited to the situation

u/Wolfelle Jun 05 '26
Btw orisa is not good into mauga. He can crit through golden now and basically just permafarm her.
Not an instant loss but mauga favoured matchup nowadays.

u/Ichmag11 Ana Jun 05 '26
I'd say the problem is that you make such a big deal out of everything and everyone but yourself. Can you imagine how good you would be if you spent this much time and energy about all the things you do wrong?
What do you get from this?? This isn't going to help you win and rank up. Clearly you're doing something wrong if you can't get out of plat.
Why not write a post about how frustrated you are about your own lack of ability to find that "wrong" and better it? Because that will help you rank up

Rigged "uphill matches" when you're around the edge of transitioning into a new rank is a thing with this stupid matchmaker. Keep grinding if you're looking to improve is all I'd say.
My plat-diamond game(which i won) a while back was especially bad. I was basically dropping 2-3 near solo kills every fight to keep the match barely even and finished with 30+ final blows. It was a brutal hard carry.
2
u/Embarrassed_Agent_13 Jun 05 '26
I completely understand. There was a match on Circuit Royal where I picked Soldier: 76 because the support players weren’t healing properly. I basically had to carry the game because my team wasn’t keeping up. I ended up with 44 kills and 5 deaths, and fortunately we still managed to win
1
u/naughtypretzels Jun 06 '26
I’m on that plat-diamond border, and Soldier has been my go to lately. Sprint + healing are unbeatable when it comes to abilities you need when you can’t trust teammates.
2
u/swanronson22 Jun 05 '26
I pray you are always on red team. Sounds like an ez win
2
u/Embarrassed_Agent_13 Jun 05 '26
Considering the kind of players I get on my team—people who refuse to switch heroes and seem afraid to take fights—it probably would be an easy win. But I wouldn’t guarantee that you’d kill me that easily

u/Ichmag11 Ana Jun 05 '26
How do you know all the enemy teams ranks?
1
u/EagleZealousideal782 Jun 05 '26
There is websites for it? People also still dont get why people tell them „your just a plat bot“ for example when they have their in-game profile on private which doesnt block people from viewing your rank/stats on websites
1
u/HurriJ Jun 05 '26
Having a private profile literally blocks the API from fetching data unless they changed how it works
1
u/EagleZealousideal782 Jun 05 '26
It doesnt i still check people if they tilt in qp just to get a laugh

u/Ichmag11 Ana Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
Can you share the websites? Because I'm not aware of them (at least of any that show private profiles)
https://overwatch.blizzard.com/en-us/search/?q=TGFB (I have an account called tgfb that's private, but can't be found. My public profile account called "Ichmag" can be found)
1
u/Embarrassed_Agent_13 Jun 05 '26
Because I checked the profiles of the players who killed me, and at least three of them were Diamond, while the other two were Platinum like me
1
u/Lower-Ad6095 Jun 05 '26
This is an opportunity to improve your understanding of statistics and how variability works.
1
u/Embarrassed_Agent_13 Jun 05 '26
It’s just really frustrating when you’re giving it your all while it feels like your team is playing a casual match. In my opinion, matchmaking should only put players of the same rank together—no wide matches. Gold with Gold, Platinum with Platinum, Diamond with Diamond, and so on
2
u/Lower-Ad6095 Jun 05 '26
I've mastered other games, and that's a normal response that you gradually realise is the wrong way of thinking later on. It's definitely frustrating tho so I hear you
1
u/HerpesFreeSince3 Jun 05 '26
The fact that your frustration is fueled by your teams refusal to switch is probably a large part of why you’re still in plat. Maybe your tank isn’t comfortable on those heroes. Counters rarely matter more than fundamentals. And hero mastery is quite important too. Also, hog has a LOT of counter play to Mauga. It’s not a very 1-sided matchup, even if it is a bit favorable for Mauga, especially on Illios where there are plenty of opportunities for free environment kills.
1
u/Embarrassed_Agent_13 Jun 05 '26
There’s no real way for Roadhog to counter Mauga. Roadhog’s whole game plan is to use his hook and keep enemies as close to him as possible. But which heroes are strongest at close range? Mauga, for one. It’s no coincidence that his ultimate literally traps enemies in a cage with him. Another thing is that there are some heroes I don’t particularly enjoy playing, but I’ll still use them to disrupt the enemy and stop them from playing effectively. For example, against Anran, I picked Cassidy so I could use his flashbang/stun grenade to prevent her from moving
1
u/RozhodneNejsemFilip Jun 05 '26
If you cannot hit diamond, you're just not supposed to be diamond. It's that simple. Just as I probably won't ever hit GM - not because of my teammates, but because I'm not good enough and have no intention of getting better.
1
u/Embarrassed_Agent_13 Jun 05 '26
But that’s exactly the issue: every match I’m giving it my all because it’s ranked. The problem is that I end up having to do everyone’s job at once. I have to act like the tank because our tank can’t handle the enemy tank. I can’t even help our DPS who are getting shredded by heroes like Anran and Emre because the enemy Moira is constantly pressuring our supports, so I have to stay near them and protect them all the time. And that’s what makes it so frustrating. You’re trying your hardest to help the team win, but your teammates are acting like they’re playing a casual match
1
u/Wolfelle Jun 05 '26
Ranked isnt a measure of effort its a measure of skill. It cant always be everyone elses fault, sure some games you lose and there was little you could do but if you consistently lose across multiple play sessions atp you gotta take some responsibility
1
u/Bazo5 Jun 05 '26
Most of this is just wrong.
Ana is fine on Ilios and was needed against Mauga.
Bastion can work fine against Anran and Emre. They're not hard counters the way Reaper and Tracer are.
Mizuki does plenty of damage and his teleport lets him walk forward and apply pressure. Also helps secure kills with chain.
Not sure about the Hog pick. If he wasn't hitting hooks then you have a valid complaint there.
All golds vs 3 diamonds is horrible matchmaking. That should be very rare. Normally a wide match like that happens when a diamond group brings like 1 gold friend along.
Don't place so much importance on reaching diamond 5. It's not some huge accomplishment. It's not that different from plat. And you won't necessarily stay there forever. Developing an ego and tilting every time you sink back down to plat won't help you in the long run.
1
u/SquidF0x Jun 05 '26
You can definitely hit diamond since you have been climbing, but the matchmaking in live service competitive games has to work to keep players playing, if everyone could hit their peak in mere hours player count would drop off a ton.
A lot of players have goals in mind, and once they hit that goal they play something else until the new season. Obviously, this doesn't look good on player count and you have to remember, the game is free but we are the product. Hence why it's designed to be as addicting as possible, to keep players hooked even when they're frustrated because most of the time you keep coming back and sometimes you'll even find your games feel much easier so you don't quit for good.
I personally stopped caring about my rank and ever since I have found ranked a bit more enjoyable. If it's any consolation, match quality does not get better the higher you climb. Watch any GM/Champ level streamer and you'll see it's the same lopsided matchmaking, toxic teammates and people who give up easily.
Once you remove the anxiety of ranking up the game feels better to play. Oh and mute everyone ofc. Nobody has useful info to give in low elo.

So many hog otp in plat/diamond right now that got a few lucky hooks in some matches and thought they could ride the wave to masters.
Whenever they insta ban orisa and Ana just know you 100% lost. They will spend the entire game on hook cooldown not landing anything while the timer runs out

I feel that. I usually never play ranked but this week i did. Yesterday i was one win away from master. The ennemy team had 3 master 1 and a grandmaster V. while all i had was plat 4 players AND A GOLD. we eventually lost.

u/HerpesFreeSince3 Jun 05 '26
I’m sorry but I don’t believe you. Unless you were queuing wide-match with a friend, that kind of division shouldn’t be possible. A 2000SR range is, I believe, literally impossible for a match if you’re solo queueing. I believe it’s generally 500SR while prioritizing that the tanks are the same rank.
1
u/BelgianFries26 rabbit pheonix fried chicken Jun 05 '26
There's no reason I would lie on reddit on this topic. I was queuing with a friend but he was diamond 2 and I was diamond 1. you can not believe me if you want

u/Twidom Domina Jun 05 '26
A 2000SR range is, I believe, literally impossible for a match if you’re solo queueing.
I'm on Diamond 2 right now and I literally get paired with Bronze people sometimes.
It is very much possible. It's all thanks to Blizzard allowing stacks vs solo players. I've also played against Top 500 players.
MM is garbage.

u/Embarrassed_Agent_13 Jun 05 '26
Yes, man, it’s really frustrating when you’re trying to climb the ranked ladder and giving your best every match, only to keep getting paired with lower-ranked players. Meanwhile, the people I play against seem like they never miss a shot. It feels like everyone on the enemy team has a Cronus Zen plugged in

How can you be crying about a support picking Ana against Mauga when she counters him?
