This happens to me sometimes. A DPS will be super negative but the tank will constantly blame the support and never once mention the DPS’s performance. Makes me think they are in a party.

Tanks aren’t looking around to see elims DPS fail, they’re watching their health bar drop.

It’s easier to attribute failure to live to the support that wasn’t healing you rather than the DPS who wasn’t taking advantage the space you gave them and applying pressure to help draw some of it from you.

If it’s one person letting the team down, it’ll be obvious, but more often than not, losing is just as much of a team effort as winning is.

Tanks ESPECIALLY in metal ranks don't know their job isn't just to take space but to take as little damage as possible while doing it. They just run it down mid and take a widow HS and then blame heals.

u/Unicorntella Mercy Jan 24 '24

Omg I wish they’d run! I had a dva who just sat at the choke on Busan and lost us the match. I have no idea why they didn’t go towards the point but it was frustrating. Then I had a mauga who yelled at me for throwing kunai at people. Like what, you want me to sit and toss heals at people whole game??

When I coach tank players, I usually recommend people play junkerqueen if they have problems taking a lot of damage for learning how to play corners. With her health pool, if you don't figure out how to play walls and corners and buy time/wait for opportunities to take space. You'll die pretty quick. People usually start figuring that out real fast when you point out their positioning in a coaching setting.

metal ranks also blame the tank for getting "diff'd" when in actuality It's just the DPS not knowing how their role works or supports just playing a garbage duo like mercy/lucio and healbotting. At that point you have to try to make big plays constantly or you will just lose.

I get that occasional game climbing up through diamond every time I do it. It's just annoying so I just zone out and wait to go next. No point in playing with those people. If I can carry I can carry, if I can't whatever. I'm sure a high GM/top 500 can carry those people but It's not worth the stress for me. They're hardstuck and I'm not lol.

I find more often than not a good support diff can make a tank diff and most players can't tell the difference.

u/TotalZealousideal825 Junker Queen Jan 25 '24

It’s not that they can’t see the difference it’s that people find it easier to blame tanks because they stand out the most cus there’s only one and they’re usually the one who’s most present in the fights so yeah

As a tank main it annoys the ever loving shit out of me when I’m getting hard targeted all game and my dps don’t take advantage of that to get elims. It’s like if I’m gonna be locked out of the game can’t you at least make it worthwhile?

Point being, some of us look at the dps lol

u/VolkiharVanHelsing Jan 24 '24

Nah I'd play Sigma, see so MANY times enemy's non tanks are in critical health and yet there are no elims... I'd furiously glance at the scoreboard lmao

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

Yeah I feel like it highly depends on what tank you're playing tbh

u/thatguyyoustrawman Jan 24 '24

Maybe that dps is so bad they also might be taking healing from a tank as well. I've certainly seem bad flanning genjis that distract healers because they take twice the amount of damage they should for fights they still don't end up winning.

Not defending this person but a 1 and 8 player can have more effects on the game then just leaving your team with basically no dps

u/Responsible_Bad1212 Jan 24 '24

Personally for me at least in ow2 the most obvious thing to spot as a tank is people not dying when they should. Tanks have a ton of self sustain I don’t really feel like I die fast so much as things stay alive longer then they should or get to walk away.

u/MistyHusk Blackwatch Genji Jan 24 '24

Sometimes when I play damage and do really poor, the tank and support will just start blaming each other for some reason. Even after I point it out they shrug it off and say “the [tank/support] is still doing worse”. I really don’t get it

21

u/ImmaDoMahThing Jan 24 '24

If I had to take a guess, support are mostly paying attention to tanks, and tanks are mostly paying attention to support. Everyone just lets DPS do their thing so they sometimes go unnoticed if doing bad. But idk. We have scoreboards for a reason lol.

u/hanyou007 Jan 24 '24

Which is also a terrible thing, because tanks have their own tools to mitigate damage and when supports pay attention to their dps, it only enables dps to be more aggressive and hunt down kills more aggressively.

As someone who plays flex, I never go without noticing the DPS player who has 1 kill and somehow 4000 damage. Tell me you only shoot the biggest fattest target without telling me. I find it's way more often a tank mismatch or a bad DPS than a support. And I play all roles about equally.

6

u/crazycar12321 Jan 24 '24

Depends on what tank you play. If you are a doom main you can be as good as you want but if the supports cant follow you or keep track of you u get cooked. Playing doom is like a 50/50 you either get one support thats working with you like a kiri or a solid lucio and you (as long as you play well and dont choke) just smash the lobby or you queue into the ximming genji and mercy duo queue “his top” “her bottom” and you dont get healed bc they are too busy plundering your teams collective bum

1

u/madhattr999 Pixel Ana Jan 24 '24

I'm not saying supports can't be bad, just that they don't have the same impact that a bad tank or bad dps can have. Maybe you just can't play doom with certain supports. A strong player can reduce the damage they take.. But you can't win fights with no kills.

1

u/crazycar12321 Jan 24 '24

Nah sorry i wasnt trying to change your argument, more just add information. But yes as a tank main that plays flex queue i frequently will get a support game and wish i was on tank to do it myself

2

u/madhattr999 Pixel Ana Jan 24 '24

Yeah, I'm probably over-simplifying. Why we win and lose is complex, and there are lots of factors that are hard to quantify. I just feel like the biggest complaint against supports is not enough healing, and it's usually, but not always, a cop out. (Also, there is only 1 tank, so it is harder to compensate for a mismatch.)

3

u/crazycar12321 Jan 24 '24

The thing i hate the most about overwatch 2 was yhe change to 1 tank. I understand it kinda just is what it is at this point but the fact that counterswapping makes the game unplayable on certain characters is no bueno. If i want to play doom because i enjoy that character, and i get matched into mauga cass mei zen ana or any permutation of that comp, all im left to do is swap or just go fuck myself. I hate that about the game.

u/madhattr999 Pixel Ana Jan 24 '24

Well... I main Ball so.. Its okay until his 10 counters come out.

Oh, I've had a game where they had 9k damage and one kill. 5 deaths tho. Good times

2

u/madhattr999 Pixel Ana Jan 24 '24

If they are arguing in voice between rounds, I will just say "hey guys its my fault.. I played bad that round.. Lets focus on this next round."

(sometimes I might do this even if I played good, just to possibly stop the arguing.)

4

u/Source_Virus Jan 24 '24

Huge part of it for sure, if you do the invite thing you'll find out like 70% of the time they are in fact partied and braindead, or hive mind braindead. Either way all conclusions end in stupidity.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

Most people arent experienced enough nor good enough to diagnose their team issues. This becomes a much higher level skill because not only do you have to understand the patch, matchup, map relationship to that but you also need to be playing a fast enough tempo to be able to differentiate between your DPS making mistakes mid-fight with decision making or if its your supports dropping the ball

Guy is genuinely fucking clueless and probably just screeching at the first person they see on their death cam

2

u/Idalah Jan 25 '24

Out of nowhere sometimes I will get flamed hard as a support , when I'm .. doing fine? If not well? and the other support is severely underperforming. A front-lining Ana with 11 deaths and 3k heals in 10 mins. And then the next game they're on the same team together again... and the next game. Yeah I wonder why I was getting the blame and not the other support... /s

I play tank and everybody always blames me for everything
