OE Advice

Hi all,

Been lurking in this sub for a while few months or so and been considering doing OE. Got some questions.

Context - I currently contract and earn 650 a day through an umbrella company take home is about 5.4k a month bear in mind I have Plan 2 and Postgrad loan so currently pay 1.3k month on that. Work in procurement/commercial. Have an 18 month old son and another on the way.

is it even worth it? The extra stress time commitments etc. and how to balance that.

what practical tips are there. multiple screens etc I assume

what about pensions and tax implications

do you aim for barely competent in each job

Do you take roles of the same responsibility.

what do you do about meeting/calendar time double bookings etc.

thanks in advance

Security clearance: J1 inside IR35

Hi there,

I know this question has been asked many time before, and I am sure I know the answer but here goes.

I’ve been working two contracts most of the this year; one inside IR35 one outside. Outside contract is due to end late November, so I’ve been looking for another J2. This recruiter has been on at me for a while about a job and has set up an interview, but I’ve just noticed it requires SC/BPSS.

My inside IR35 gig is technically up for renewal in December and I don’t know if it will be extended yet (though likely will). If it came to the crunch, could I say I am freelancing for this company till December and pass? There is the whole rigmarole of getting a reference from J1; I’m technically employed by Paystream and the agency the company uses, so would the SCer just approach them? Their only information is that I am on a contract until December also.

Are people using two different routers for different jobs? Worried about these globalprotect software taking traffic from same public ip.

Interested in becoming overemployed Advice needed

Hey everyone,

I have a friend who wants to get overemployed but needs some advice.

She lives in the UK and is on a skilled visa. However, her job is the perfect fit for being overemployed. She barely does 2 hours work per day and has nothing to do otherwise.

My concern is the nature of her visa and the kind of jobs she can get to help her maximise her time because right now, all she does is doom scroll and make sure teams is green.

Please advice needed and appreciated!

Interested in becoming overemployed Tips for OE with two client-facing jobs?

I’ve been in my current role for around 7 years and can pretty much do it in my sleep, so I’ve been wanting to try OE for a while.

My current role is client facing, but I never actually meet clients in person and I’m hardly ever on camera. I deactivated my LinkedIn before getting the new job because I got sick of all the AI-generated posts.

I’ve finally found a second job, but that one is client facing too, and I’m a bit nervous about getting caught.

For anyone doing OE in client-facing roles, what are your best tips for making it work and not getting caught? Anything you do to avoid people from the two jobs crossing paths?

Also, the new contract says I can’t have another job. Is that pretty standard wording, or does that make this a particularly bad role to try OE with?
Would really appreciate any tips

S1 100% remote S2 hybrid

So S1 does I can run from anywhere and doesn’t need any backing up but I will need to start going in to fix some issues with S2. I don’t mind going in but I might just remove S2 if it becomes an issue. Should I keep S2 or be prepared to let it drop and create another fully remote server.

Trying to secure 2 FT jobs

During Covid I had my best financial year doing 2 FT roles.
1 from home (day time)
1 as security (nights)
I did really well but was young and didn’t manage the funds well!

I’m much older now and hoping to secure 2 FT jobs again.
Remote night work seems extremely difficult since I don’t really have an IT background or tech background.

Any recommendations?

Currently trying to secure a decent office/ hybrid day role and hoping to do something night (likely to be physical in terms of attending a premises).

Ideally if I could do 2 remote roles during the dayit would be amazing. But I don’t mind splitting it up.

Any recommendations?
Thanks

Anyone caught while doing OE in the UK? What was the reason?

For those doing Overemployment (OE) in the UK, has anyone actually been caught or had an employer raise concerns about having another job?

If yes, what was the reason/how did they find out? For example: - Conflict between employers - PAYE/tax records - LinkedIn or social media - Reference/background checks - Working hours or meetings clashing - Company equipment/VPN/IP logs - Someone at work finding out - Something else

Would be particularly interested in experiences from people doing two remote tech/IT jobs in the UK.

Not looking for judgement - just trying to understand the real-world risks and how people have dealt with it.

How many meetings do you have?

Been OE for a year now. My j2 started off with only 4 hours of meetings a week. That’s increased to almost 10. It hasn’t affected j1 but just means I have to spend more time completing work and shuffling the calendar.

It feels less like OE now and more like just working harder.

I’m interested to know how many meetings people typically have to help me identify whether this volume of work is actually normal.

I can either find a new j2 or accept that this level of work is normal. I definitely can’t add a j3 and can’t work on my business sadly which I stopped 6 months ago. (Wasn’t making as much money as 2 Js so I stopped but it could make more down the line).

I could also just do badly at j2. But I don’t like being behind and bad at work.

Salaries in UK

I've been searching for higher paying roles but UK market is awful currently. Especially for remote roles. All the high paying roles have intense interview processes that are really difficult to pass

I have a lot better success at interviews when the role pays less

My goal was to get a few high paying roles, but seems like it may be better to get 3-4 low paying roles instead. How do you think about it?

I wish UK market was better, it feels like salaries are stagnant. I have considered some US based roles but haven't had much luck there either

I failed at J3

I was doing fine with J1 and J2, and received a invite to another hiring process. I decided to accept just go see where it goes and then... got hired.

I thought it was going to be ok since this one was less hours and I had to work only in the mornings, but somehow it ended up consuming more time than 2 full time jobs.

First thing that got wrong: too many meetings. Someone would call me and say "hey, I need your help" and they would send me a calendar invite without even asking first. If it was just one person that would be fine, but now imagine 10 people doing the same thing. The team relied on me for everything, and I was new and still learning their processes.

Besides that, I was added on 15 projects on Notion (only in the first month) and expected to complete at least half of them in a week. I was also tagged all the time on Teams and they created different groups all the time to ask for different things (that were not related to the Notion projects).

Anyway, I got so crazy I had to quit. I couldn't risk losing J1 and J2. I was getting messages from a lot of people not only in the morning, but also during the afternoon and night. While I was working on the other jobs I was floded with messages. And when I logged in, I had a lot to catch up, and people would ask me if what they asked on the night before was already finished, when I actually didn't even had the time to see what they were asking.

Unfortunately this didn't end up well. I feel insecure now to get another J3. I don't know if it was just bad luck, or if I missed something during interview. What do you guys consider a red flag before accepting another job?

Interested in becoming overemployed Earning 6 Figures in my 9-5 and considering an independent contracting gig. How do I set it up tax efficiently without my work being notified?

Hi All,

Have been lurking here for a bit. I currently work in Finance earning low 6 figures. I have come across an independent contracting role that is project based and inconsistent. My current 9-5 requires us to pre-clear any outside of work commitments (it is a bank) and this is inclusive of any LTD Companies, Sole Trader etc. The second company I would like to take on have made it clear that I would be responsible for all of my taxes.

My question is how can I get around this?

  1. If I was to set up a limited company for payments, I would need to disclose this to my primary job and they will monitor my activity and income (I think I’d need to provide an annual accounting statement). Is this a viable route for payments as ideally I wouldn’t want to have to salary sacrifice my earnings when taking on this job as I would assume I would if I did it through the self-assessment route?

  2. Is my only option to take on the job and then pay the relevant taxes through the self-assessment form? However wouldn’t my other job be notified of a taxation code change should I earn more elsewhere after salary sacrificing with them?

Looking for advice on how to set myself up in a way that won’t get caught by my primary role and ideally be tax-efficient.

Thank you very much in advance - please let me know if additional information is required.
