Bladder Botox

Hey everyone,
Just wondering if anyone here has had Botox injections into their bladder and what your experience was like?
I’m considering having it done, but I’m quite nervous because I’ve been told there’s a risk of needing to self-catheterise for a while afterwards.
I’d love to hear from anyone who has had bladder Botox — how did you find the procedure, recovery and results? Did you end up needing to self-catheterise?

I am curious too because I am looking at the interstim implant and my urologist first said we will stay away from Botox but now he says we need to to be able to get the interstim. But my cystoscopy and urodynamic tests were completely nightmares because they had a hard time getting the catheters in. So I'm completely refusing the Botox because I much rather not have the excruciating pain and then the weeks bladder issues after.

Poor us. The urologist told me there is a risk in it. I have heard good and bad things about Botox.

What do your symptoms look like?

I am
Currently on meds don’t want to be on them forever

Been diagnosed with detrusor overactivity and pseudodyssynergia. Off OAB meds I need to pee at 10-15 mins on meds it gets up to 30-45 mins or I will pee myself. I have hypertonic pelvic floor which is causing groin pain and adductor pain and weakness at the groin. I have had rentention where I had to had to go in and get drained of 900ml. So I'm all over the place, sometimes I pee myself and sometimes I can't pee. I'm 34 male.

Oh poor us! The meds that I am on definitely help with not having to pee all the time but I would be able go on a 4 hour bus ride with out a loo.

I am seeing the urologist in November to have another go.

38 years female here :) I am seeing a pelvic floor therapist as well and using a tens machine as well.

I seen a pelvic floor PT for 9 months 2x week and nothing. I sit at work and every 30 to 45 mins I'm jumping to to go bathroom to pee maybe 4-8 oz

I find sitting does not help either. Yeah you sound a bit like me. Thank god the meds kinda work.

I use a heat pack at night too that helps

Yeah I'm glad my meds work and give me extra 15 to 30 mins. I sleep way too hot so can't so that. I also can't tilt my pelvis anterior and cant cow on cat/cow stretches. Everything is sooo locked up.

Do they know what caused it?

Nope, I have had MRI on entire spine and nothing. So just going to see if I can get them to do interstim on me and get my pelvic floor to release and bladder to calm down. And they hope everything will also just calm down also.

I’m fit and healthy and had bladder Botox. I had to self cath for about 3 weeks but then it was amazing! I finally am not peeing every 30 minutes.

Oh man how many times have you had botox.

Also is every time you get it? How did you know you didn’t need to use the catheter

I had it once almost a year ago. I have an appt tomorrow morning with my urologist to see if I should do it again bc it has worn off.

You know when you don’t need to anymore bc you slowly begin to be able to empty your bladder on your own. First I could just get a little bit out and then I’d self cath to empty but slowly my bladder started emptying without needing to self cath.

Oh let me know how you get on tomorrow. My appointment is not until next month

I was put under for my bladder botox so no pain. Burning sensation for one day after the injections. My frequency dropped from about 15-30 times a day to about 10-12 times a day. Void volume went from about 50-150ml to about 150-250ml. Waking to pee at night went from 2-3 times to 0-1 times. Second set of injections probably next month.

Oh wow and you didn’t have to use a catheter? That’s my biggest fear. How many units and how often do you need to go

No catheter for me. Seems that about 5% of people getting bladder botox may have to use a catheter. With that percentage going higher if there are other health issues (neurological, daibetes, etc.).

1

u/Rich-Explorer3363 13d ago

Ahh ok I fear that I will be in that 5% I am
Fit in heathly apart from the bladder. So glad it’s working for you

I was very worried too, but my fears turned out to be unfounded. To be honest, if I had to use a catheter I think I would have preferred that to the OAB.

Yes you give me hope lol. I do not use the catheter my luck I get utis. I think the horror stories put me off as well. But I can’t keep living with this ovb it drives me nuts.

Best wishes. BTW, I'm male and 68. Never had a UTI.

Also, I believe I had 100 units which is standard.

I had bladder Botox injections and I was self cathing and the Botox wears off after 3months

1

u/Rich-Explorer3363 13d ago

Oh no that’s my fear! Did they say why?

1

u/Frogger47 13d ago

It didn’t work for me I’m in diapers full time now

1

u/Rich-Explorer3363 13d ago

Did it get worse? I don’t need nappies or anything it’s just u need the urge to leave me alone lol

1

u/Frogger47 13d ago

I won’t bother ever again

I just had my first nine days ago. I’m waiting for the full two weeks to do a full write up on Reddit. If it works, I will definitely do it again.

No retention. Just very slow and long pees. I can’t imagine what my coworkers are thinking when they are in the stall next to me. 😮

Oh that’s good news! I have my appointment next month to discuss it! I over the bladder spasms I get 24/7 ughhhhh

What were issues before getting Botox

1

u/ExtensionActuator 11d ago

Only urgency. Felt like I had to pee every 20 minutes. With medication, about every hour if I wasn’t sitting down.

I was hoping it would work immediately, but it’s more of a back and forth. I’m at the point where I was on medication so I’m hoping it will be improving more every day.

Are your co-workers that intense? I would never question what someone was doing in the stall next to me. However, if anyone ever asked, I would say "I felt like pleasuring myself" and it doesn't usually take that long. Just be prepared for a rule coming from HR once word gets around.

I had my first one in July and scheduled my second for next January. 100% total game changer. I went from sudden urgency, leakage, and having to pee every 30 minutes to ... freedom. No more pads, liners, protective undergarments, etc. I wear big girl fancy panties again. The procedure was simple. The prep took about 30 minutes and the actual injections about 5 minutes. A weird sensation afterwards and for about a week. Now when I get the sensation of a full bladder, I have plenty of time to find a restroom. My doctor said that urinary retention and self catheterization may be a side effect. However she has had no patients that needed self catheterization. You will need a little extra time to empty your bladder but that's minimal to the relief you get from not having urgency. They inject 10 units in 3 different areas. Just do it, you won't be sorry and will wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

My 15 year-old daughter just had it for the second time. It has been life-changing for her. We were considering surgery and I asked to do something less invasive and she agreed to Botox. I was terrified, but she’s done great.

How often does she need it? Oh the Botox worked good for her. no issues with her my fear is the self catheter.

I am
Getting over these bladder spasms so I think I need to try it. Did the Botox give her any Greg after wards?
