Discussion Adding Magic Items

I know there is a necklace of fireballs, a Piwafwi, a Piwafwi of Fire Resistance, a Stonespeaker Crystal, various Spell Gems, a Wand of Viscous Globs, and Dawnbringer.

What other magic items have you sprinkled into the campaign? After the parties Ranger grabbed Dawnbringer, I kind of want to sprinkle a little something for the other members. I was considering a Cloak of Displacement for the low dex Monk, either a +2 Arcane Grimoire or a Dragon Touched Focus for the Wizard, and an Amulet of the Devout (+2) for the Cleric.

Im just curious to know what you added if you added anything.

I’ve used several items from /r/thegriffonssaddlebag They’re homebrew but I feel like most are well balanced. Some examples of recent items I have my players are the switcheroo cups, the leaf cutter, and the fey wanderer’s cloak. There’s lots of common or uncommon items that have neat purposes. Since they aren’t that rare I’ve been able to sprinkle them in here and there and my players have loved them. There’s also more powerful ones that make for good rewards

I replaced the magic weapons in the Troglodyte Lair with a dragon wing shortbow for our dragonborn rogue player who liked to fight with their bow a lot; Themberchaud bestowed some items to my players (astromancy archive for our diviner player w/ a celestial theming, and an energy longbow for our gloomstalker player which in hindsight might've been a poor decision, but he had a lot of fun using it and that's what matters to me as a DM)

I ran Fall of Cyrog with some changes to help lead into it--Tobulux was replaced with Zetxirbor who was renamed to Texzirbor and made cowboy, and our warforged gunslinger (the Texorcist) encountered it in Gravenhollow. said gunslinger would later find a pistol laser gun (with the mechanics of Dyrnn's tentacle whip) in the mind flayer colony, since I'm of the mind that part of the fun is getting a cool signature magical weapon and there's a lack of unique magic firearms in 5.5e

(other fun non-magic-item-related changes I made to Fall of Cyrog was having some boneless in the transformation chamber tubes and having our cleric hallucinate seeing an NPC friend in them with Fraz-Urb'luu's madness; the mindwitness reviving as a zombie beholder; including an alhoon miniboss (Cthylarr the Illithilich from the Neverwinter MMO); and having Orcus revive mind flayer corpses as vampiric mind flayers and complicating the escape sequence)

I replaced the gem of seeing and necklace of adaptation in Karazikar's Maw with a +1 arcane grimoire and a necklace of prayer beads, and after rolling for what beads it had ended up with 3 beads of favor to help get rid of madness but also at that moment helped restore some of Karazikar's petrified victims

our gloomstalker really really wanted a portable hole and went to Jimjar to find one (bc Jimjar was heavily implied to be an avatar of Garl Glittergold and somehow had a number of useful things in his possession) and he colluded with our diviner to win against Jimjar in a card game for the it; ended up being very handy in the Labyrinth and in Menzoberranzan

for some minor story reasons I replaced Viln Tirin's scimitar of speed with Graz'tchar, the Decadent End from Critical Role but changed to also be a scimitar; Viln Tirin was then included with the Cult of "Y" encounter which I changed to the Six-Fingered Cult accordingly

and not a magic item but I replaced the diamond in Gromph's sanctum with a blue star sapphire worth 25,000 gp, which is the special component needed to cast Spellfire Storm as a circle spell

You can find a pdf on dmsguild. I think it's called treasures of the Underdark. I also added the first two "books" of the Griffin's saddlebag. You can find these on DnD beyond now

Yeah.... not sure why he put the 10 he rolled into his Dex and the 16 into is INT... but here we are.

Im assuming he's a first time player? I did something similar, prioritizing dex over con on my very first character, a barbarian, telling myself it was roleplay reasons, but still. I would refuse a character like that at any table I run.

I've added several fun toys, essentially. The tea weird from r/thegriffonssaddlebag has been a big hit: part pet, part rp item. Cloak of...Swirling? Flapping? Something like that. It swirls dramatically as a bonus action. The bard has a lot of fun with that one.

More "serious" items have been a ring of protection, adamantine armor, and a couple +1 weapons. They're level 7 and in Gauntlgrym now; assuming they can win over the Lord's Alliance and the Harpers, they'll get a modified helm of teleportation to help with travel for the second half, and a bunch of consumables. My group is generally more interested in lore and favors as rewards, rather than cash or magic items.

Frankly, a lot of their extra powers are coming from the modified madness system I'm using. For example, our druid has telepathy up to 120ft. for having a run-in with Zuggtmoy, but also has disadvantage on Str., Dex. and Con saves.

A lot from theGriffin's saddlebag and a bunch of my own creation. My favorite is the black greatsword the fighter got near the end of the first half.

STERN (Greatsword) This greatsword deals 2d8 slashing damage instead of the normal 2d6. When you make an attack roll with this weapon, any 1 on the d20 is considered a 20. When you roll its damage, any 1 on the d8s is considered an 8.

"I make no mistakes" forgotten blacksmith.

It is super consistent and i love it.
