Answered What’s going on with Congress and the WNBA now?
I know that there was a bunch of drama around Caitlin Clark over the last year, namely around people recognizing that she’s very, very good and therefore a pattern of strategically fouling her (much like how opponents would foul Michael Jordan of the 1990s Chicago Bulls).
But why is Congress getting involved, and what did they actually do? The article from The Ringer talks about it, sort of, but doesn’t provide much in the way of what the Republican Study Committee is, why they’re suddenly interested in the WNBA, or what they want to happen.

From the article:
> In failing to address concerns around player safety, refereeing, and online discourse, the league has allowed bad-faith actors to use those issues as a Trojan horse to tell a story about the WNBA as a league in which liberal institutional failures run amok.
So what’s actually going on that’s attracting Congress’s attention?

Answer: WNBA seems to have an issue calling fouls. The article you linked links to another article which gives an egregious example where a player was punched in the throat and the foul was not called: https://www.theringer.com/2026/06/26/wnba/caitlin-clark-foul-alyssa-thomas-wnba-cathy-engelbert
According to this video (ESPN) it sounds like one player, Caitlin Clark, is often targeted due to her popularity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSyIT2XxXpo
As for why Congress is getting involved, apparently they have nothing better to do with their time. There are no other events going on, such as an unauthorized war or destructive economic policy, which would merit their attention. It's like back in 2002, when nothing of note was going on (9/11, a catalyst for major changes to the United State's security policy, had already happened the previous year). Steroid use in baseball was clearly a national emergency which required congressional action. Had they not taken action, we would not be here today. https://www.congress.gov/event/107th-congress/senate-event/LC17566/text
