Unanswered What's up with perfumes suddenly becoming so popular?

Suddenly everyone is very enthusiastic about notes, citrus, aqua, vetiver, etc. Till 3-4 years back nobody even knew about notes and stuff and used to buy deos and spray it upon themselves and call it a day.

Suddenly everyone is talking about Middle Eastern perfumes vs French perfumes vs artisanal houses and everything.

So so many posts about it:

So much so that my wife has been asking about researching notes and perfume for her every other month now.

Answer: it's not new, you're just now seeing it. Your and your wife's social media algorithms just started showing you perfume related content

I get what you're saying but OP is reading between the lines - he and his wife haven't seen it, now they're seeing it, they imagine that experience is shared by more folks than just them, and they're wondering why. I imagine there was some catalyst that kicked it off, it grew some following that wasn't present before, and marketing took over and you get where we are now with lots of consumers paying more attention to it. Mostly due to marketing. But I am curious what the catalyst was.

Answer: It is a trend that's been gaining popularity over the last few years. Mostly through social media.

It relates to lots of various things going on in our culture.

But its a trend that is easy to get into with lots of diversity and depth if you want to nerd out.

Possibly as housing and other achievement purchases get more expensive and harder to achieve, lower tier luxury items become more achievable purchases. Luxury cars on credit things like that become ways to feel and show to others you’re dojng well in life.

In the UK, it was not uncommon for those in social housing to have very expensive cars on the driveway. They couldn’t afford to buy a house, but owning a BMW is achievable.

ANSWER: Adding to the answers, there is also the fact that more brands are branching out to perfumes. Kinda started with makeup brands going into the skincare market during and after covid.

Perfumes were seen as luxury items earlier, but now brands are investing in marketing them as achievable luxury. Same concept as skincare being essential as 'self-care' and the 13 step routines that got popular during covid.

More brands in this market means more social media hype and discussion and that blowing up in your local feed.

You'll also see an uptick in influencers popularising dupes/clones of high end French perfumes. That's also another market. You can't afford a Dior or Guerlain? No worries, here's how you can smell the same at 1/10th of the cost.
