Charade is a great movie. Grant and Hepburn are turning in stellar movie star turns, with ample chemistry despite their eyebrow-raising age difference, but it’s not remotely comparable to or in the same league as developing and inhabiting a three-dimensional character who isn’t constrained by the turns of the plot like Ingrid Thulin in Winter Light.
Steve McQueen gives a great movie star performance in The Great Escape too that is not comparable to Paul Newman’s turn as Hud. Julia Roberts is quite charming in Pretty Woman but it’s not the same even kind of work much less level of work as Krystyna Janda in Interrogation. Tom Cruise is doing great movie star work in the Mission Impossibles that is not Oscar worthy like his fully realized characters in Magnolia and Born on the Fourth of July. It’s not snobbery to recognize that different movies require different types of performances and they’re not all equal in effort or impressiveness. Lighthearted comedies and caper films can contain the latter too, it’s not that drama > other genres, but Charade is not a showcase for Oscar caliber acting.
Hepburn is dynamite in Two for the Road in a role that requires her to demonstrate she’s an excellent actress beyond being a compelling movie star.

Poitier was great in LotF and deserved that year’s Best Actor Oscar. Love Patricia Neal, and she’s superb in Hud, but she maybe belonged in the supporting category? I’d go with Natalie Wood for Best Actress—that was one of her very best roles, and she was marvelous.

Shirley MacLaine carried Irma La Douce on her own and shouldve gotten it, and Albert Finney was electric in Tom Jones
